You know about my leaking rad by now - and may know I have purchased a pattern one, which my local garage is fitting...

Well, the garage called me today, to say the new rad is not the same - mine has (apparently) 6 pipes coming off of it, but the new one only has connections for 4.

As far as I knew, there should be 2 big ones (top and bottom main hoses) and the 2 small ones on the side, for the auto transmission cooler. I have not counted the expansion tank, before anyone says anything!

The online service manual - and every picture of an OEM auto-trans radiator I have seen - all show only the 4 pipe connectors. Does anyone have an idea what the other 2 are? I'm popping along after work to see what he's talking about....

Richard:confused:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I'm with you here... Have the two large engine inlet/outlet, inlet and outlet for auto box, and then the overflow pipe by the rad cap. I couldn't think what the 6th is unless it's the drain plug he's counting?

That's what I was thinking Alic, but they would surely know a difference between an actual hose outlet

To that of an overflow pipe & drain plug?

Yup - that's the one....

It is the right part by all accounts, it's just that my car appears different to the norm....!

I went to the garage and, sure enough, there are 6 pipes in my car. It looks I have a second oil cooler in the other side of the radiator - on the filler-cap side, there is the usual auto trans oil cooler and associated pipework as one would expect. However on my current set-up, there are 2 extra hoses on the opposite side, mirroring the oil cooler pipes....?? What do you reckon - diff oil cooler? It can't be the PAS, as I already had (and removed) the little one at the very front.

Here are a couple of pics - apologies for the poor quality - this is the driver's side of the radiator, under the top hose......

...Auto trans oil cooler is to the passenger side, under the filler cap.

the diff oil cooler om uk cars is at the rear has nothing to do with the front of the car

Yup - that's what I understood. Also, diff oil is quite viscous and would certainly not be pumped through those small pipes to the radiator...

....So if I appear to have a second 'cooler in the rad, can I just join the two hoses and not use it, and fit what is otherwise a normal replacement radiator for an automatic Zed?

Dont the UK,s have a PAS cooler?...ime sure they do.

They do - it's a small, single core cooler that sits in front of the radiator in the grill opening. They rust to bits and leak, hence I removed mine a while ago!

Can they not just trace the pipes and see where they lead? That will show what system they're connected to, I wouldn't bypass until you know their purpose.

But was all the pipe work removed too Richard or was it just looped...this might explain why it still contains fluid and is confusing the garage into thinking its still connected to something:)

Got it - from the Aus forum.....

....UK/EU spec cars have a double auto-transmission cooler; one in each side of the radiator!

So I need to find an OEM UK spec radiator. Looks like it's MJP or Nissan.

Nope - I removed the PAS cooler and just joined both ends of the hoses together - I left it them front of the rad, where they always sat:wink:

i have a uk car like you. was a auto at the time like yours i then removed the oem rad a fitted a larger japspeed on i then fitted the a auto box cooler infront of the rad its was very simple indeed there was a flow and return form the auto box to the rad if i remember rite there was 4 holes just for the autobox cooling it was to join up both sides of the rad for the cooler, just get a aftermarket rad and a auto cool and fit the cool on its own infact i have a mocal cooler here was only on the car for a whole in near new condtion its the rite size for the cooling of the auto box you can have it for free if you want i used it when i fitted the after market rad you will need some more pipe you can get on ebay and some clips and some joins to join the pipe

Thanks Dan - the offer is gratefully appreciated!!

I have asked Mike at MJP if he can source the OEM item, but if not, then I will buy an after-market rad and take you up on your kind offer:cool:
