For the last couple of days, I've had what was once a dream car parked on the drive: a Supra Aerotop TT6. :)

I wanted one of these for the longest time, but the only market that got the manual box in an Aerotop was the USA, so it would've meant a manual conversion or buying one that'd already been converted.

In my nearly 3 years of Z32 ownership though, I've found the Supra to be slipping down the list of dream cars and, now I've been able to compare the two back to back properly, I've found that (in my opinion, at least) the Supra is to be found wanting....

It's a very brash car. Where the Zed is sleek and fairly subtle, the Supra is incredibly obvious - it's all big curves and big lights! It's also a very big car, especially in comparison to my little 2-seater. Dare I say that it's also a little vulgar...?

I think the Supras look very much like a car of their time now, where the Zed seems pretty timeless. I found myself looking past the Supra to look at mine, possibly because it's mine but more likely because it's just the prettier car!

There are other niggles too: I've discovered that I really dislike the vents at the base of the rear arches, the rear bumper is too bulbous for my tastes (which makes the rear plate seem utterly lost) and the stock rear spoiler is not a pretty thing at all.

Then I found myself imagining a Zed with the Strosek kit on (with the vents in the rear arches) and a mid-height spoiler and realised that there was a very real chance that the designers were trying to emulate a stock Supra's look! Not a fan, I'm afraid.

Don't get me wrong; I wouldn't object to owning a Supra, especially in the Aerotop form, but I wouldn't even consider moving on from the Zed for one of them. I love my car's presence and I like the fact that it doesn't shout about itself. It just gets on with what it has to, whilst looking impossibly beautiful.

That's my opinion, anyway. :thumbup1:

i like the supra very much total legend there is no getting away from that, i would be very happy to own one, the supra and the 300zx are both great the 300 being a bit of a underdog witch is not a bad thing, both cars can look like total crap and also look just amazing, depending how deep you pockets are or coarse, its safe to say in stock form the supra wins on performance but after that there as good and bad as each other there is no winner or loser here. the 300zx being a lot cheaper to buy is also a good thing, so least any budget can afford on were the supra is not in every ones price bracket

so why is it the underdog and the fact that no one has heard of the Z but the Supra is famous. Promotion from F&F, easier to work on, more tunability?

Yes and it was also the end of an era for big RWD Japanese GT cars.

The miracle of marketing.

I have to say, I do like the supra as well as the zed, think I like them in slightly modified state over stock, mainly the front bumper and rear spoiler are things I'm not massively keen on

How is the Z the underdog? Look at the production numbers! It's difficult to find accurate figures for the Supra, but we're talking about 2.5 times the number of FD RX7s and almost ten times more than the NSX.

Is that because the yen started to strengthen though, so people couldn't afford them rather than people thinking they're worse cars?

One thing missing from this thread is them parked next to each other............

Weren't the mk4 suppose to launch about the same time as the z32 but the zx came out first and basically blew the doors of the competition, forcing Toyota back to the drawing board? So I was told and if true it's pretty cool how Nissan forced Toyota to step up its game...

I have read that too......

I like the Supra - and that blue one Mondo was working on, fantastic interior Si.... But it has not aged as well as the 300zx. I know we're a little biased, but the classic wedge of the Zed has remained timeless. Mk4 Supra, stock for stock, would out perform a 300zx TT; the UK spec cars had 326bhp and would crack 0-100mph in a little over 12 seconds. Great handling too - although a little too "clinical" in my opinion. I was set to replace my last Mk3 Supra with the Mk4 back in 2003 - until I found the 300zx...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I think we might all be a little biased on here!

Certainly on looks the Z32 is a better looking car, but IMO only as a standard car, the Supra to me response much better to a body kit our Z32 doesn't.

In terms of durability I believe the Supra to be a stronger car all round really.

I agree...

I do love the supra, I had an NA auto for a while in red. Stock everything, I loved it. However I prefer my 300, There is just something about it, im not sure if its the looks, the noise or the "spaceship" interior. However Im going to throw something else in the mix here: I would rather own a Mazda RX-7 in yellow with black bits than a supra. I know they have no subtly at all, I know they consider an engine change as a 4000 mile service and that you cant go anywhere without going sideways, but when I see them, my knees go wobbly and I normally crash into a lamp post/sign/pedestrian/petrol tanker as im getting a look!

1990 Black MT NA LWB = 2014 - 2020 (Sold)

1991 Red MT TT LWB = 2015 - 2017 (Stripped & Scrapped)

1991 Red MT TT LWB = 2017 - 2021 (Sold)

1991 Black MT TT LWB = 2018 - 2021 (Sold)

1989 Red AT TT LWB = 2021 - XXXX (Kept)

I pass an FD everyday :p. They are beautiful cars, but imho the engine (although special) isn't all that reliable and doesn't have the torque of a piston engine.

I love the look of the FD, but never been a fan of the sound of a rotary engine. Modified ones sound like a giant fart on idle and don't sound much better under heavy load.

I had an fc, great car to drive but incredibly cheaply built interior and it fell to bits quite often even on the way to trade it in the exhaust snapped in half!!

A buddy of mine is building a FD RX7, Going the whole hog with Rocket Bunny kit. He's swapped out the rotary for a 600hp forged RB25:thumbup:

I owned a supra and the zed at the same time, supra lasted me 4 years and the zed is now at 10 years and counting ;)

For me they both looked stunning, we had the supra first and we was on our way to buy another, whilst looking around all the evos gtrs supras etc in the corner at the back of the garage was a black car, I thought wtf is that,

Popped over and wow what is this thing?? agh yeah I remember now from granturismo 1 on the ps1 when I was about 8 lol!!!

Go got them to jump start it and drag it out and parked all 4 side by side and wow what a dissension.

Right lets start with the Z got 200 yards and yep I'm having it. forget the rest it just felt right and the sound was just nice, compared to the rest I thought the rear looked really old and the dash (series 2) was just bloody awful lol!!

But I didn't care it just felt right so bought it.

The supra then stayed for a further 2 years then it had to go, for me it just wasn't as good, Handling was ok but there was naff all feel from the steering wheel or the brakes and had more roll (it had new bilstiens all round), the seating position was higher than the zeds and just didn't feel right compered and the visibility just sucked

Then the drone from the exhaust and the auto box really did my head in lol!!!

It was an Na so cannot compare the pace, but the supra came with more boost as stock so you up your zed to the same and both are identical :)

Still got the mr2, had it about 15 years. Should see how small the zed is to an aventador lol

Adventadors make buses look narrow.
