I would rather die of thirst than have that.....

Agreed. I mean, if I used my Z as a buffet car or luxo barge, I can see the point. But who drives around in their Z eating and drinking 24/7 and requires constant access to somewhere to put a cup of coffee? It's a drivers' car. I love the fact that it doesn't have any of that bullshit fitted; the focus of the car is driving, not drinking and eating at the wheel.

You do know that if you pop out the ash try, there's a spot there which is what most people use.

The thought of having a cup holder and being bothered about it in a sports car fills me with disbelief. [emoji38]

So it would be in the way of the gearstick?

How is a cup holder any different to a boot, or an ashtray, or a side door pocket, or a glove box, or centre console storage?

If a sports car doesn't have to to somewhat practical, it wouldn't bother with most of those either. It's not a track car, it should be designed for everyday practicality

Because none of those require access whilst driving and it doesn't get in the way of the gear stick.

You buy a ford galaxy or worse a citroen picasso for practicality. As said pull out the ashtray and you will find a coffee cup sits nice in there. Thats all you need.....

You know your life is over when you have to drive an MPV.

But agreed.

Err why would a stock cup holder be in the way of the gearstick? They can put it wherever they want

No, you buy a car like that for MORE practicality than a zed. But a sportscar still needs some level of practicality, obviously. If you don't draw the line at an ashtray or glovebox, there is no good reason to not draw the line at a cup holder. What exactly is the major disadvantage?

Just take care when cornering hard as the Z is a sports car not a Fiat Multipla...
If even the rather agricultural NASCAR series can have cup holders that hold on to their charge for 500 miles of pure cornering, I'm sure it can't be that hard :-P

Racing drivers often piss themselves too, but I wouldn't consider adding a toilet to my Z!

You missed what I was responding to. Removing the ash tray (my original point) does not obscure the gear stick.

......FWIW, the Z32 came out in 89 and cup holders weren't really a 'thing' back then. Nissan however did offer an optional DIN cup holder.

If you REALLY want one, then you can buy this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOT-Universal-Car-Auto-Double-Din-Radio-Pocket-Drink-Cup-Holder-Storage-Box/381359613013?hash=item58cacde455:g:hSUAAOSwYS9ZaZ5U

Personally, I couldn't give a shit about bloody cup holders. I got bored of all the car manufacturers trying to 'out cup holder each other' in the late 90s/early 2000s each time they launched a new model.

Oh I had a car with one of those. It went in the bin I think

Sports car? At a ton and a half, it's pushing the definition.

Much hate for cup holders I sense, but on a long journey (which is where these cars really shine I find, they are good GT cars at heart) you need refreshment. No use having the comfiest seats known to man if you are dying of thirst!

Not a sports car

But I agree its more of a GT car, but that doesn't mean it's not sporty. The weight thing is a bit unclear though, the r33-34 GTR are both over 1.5tonnes, porsche 911 in 1990 was pretty close, would you not consider those sports cars based on their weight?.

Sporty, certainly. Sports car... Not so much. It's subjective, sure, but I'd consider 'sports cars' to be more like MGBs, Elans, MX5s, Healey 3000s, 240Zs, TR6s. Low spec 911s. GT-Rs are big coupes more along the M3 theory.

I dunno. The Z just feels heavy. Big, solid, and planted. Not something I'd feel confident slinging around like I do a hatchback, which of course is what killed the 'proper' sports car.

Sports car has a wide connotation, however the Z32 can definitely be classed a 'sports car', absolutely.

That's because yours is an NA.

For discussion's sake; the cars you list are almost exlusively light low powered cars satisfying one aspect to sports cars. If we go by definition

a low-built car designed for performance at high speeds.

or

usually two-seater, two-door automobiledesigned for spirited performance and nimble handling

Performance car for high speeds (180mph) ✔

Nimble handling ("In a 1991 handling test, the 300ZX Turbo came in second place out of 10 competitors, beating such cars as the Toyota MR2, Mazda Miata, Porsche 944 S2, and Chevy Corvette ZR-1. What did it lose to? None other than the Acura NSX.") I think we got this one too.

Sure its sort of heavy but when it surges forward with the turbo power it would be hard to say its more of a crusier than a sporty car.

Good to see the rare parts thread derailed by the coming of the cup holder debate.

**** cup holders!

That's because yours is an NA.

And short, thus lighter and nimbler than any snail powered Z32.

Besides, what sports car ever had power? Sprites had just 40hp!

Maybe I need to get it out on a track and learn what it can do, but it just doesn't feel as friendly beyond the limit as a sports car should.

This is why I hit metal and don't have a job with Autocar..

Although back on topic, has anyone ever seen the optional parking stick? A recent Youtube video featured a pair of Hondas with loads of ridiculous factory options and the extending parking stick reminded me of the Z brochure.

And Sprites are awful.

Yes, I have seen those grim parking sticks. They remind me of those crappy universal rubber aerials that Halfords used to sell in the 80s.

I present to you all, the legendary crotch vent in its close-up glory.

My Kanji is a bit rusty, but I think you'll find the symbols below mean "ball freshener".
