GregT Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 So, my 99 spec bumper is in the paint shop and so I now want to get a new bumper plate for it. So, do I go UK and horizontal rectangular or import square style? Which suits the 99 spec best in people's opinion? The car is an import so its square import style on the rear. Also, the reg of the car is an Irish style one. Anyone got any photos of their 99 spec bumpers with plates on they can show to help? Quote
Iangreenfield Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I changed mine from square to a 3/4 import plate. Quote
Chrisbasildon Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I personally like using a standard front uk size plate made up using the same size lettering as used on the rear jap size plate which is a narrower stroke size and smaller spacing, then trim the entire plate down leaving a small margin around all 4 sides, totally legal and looks just right to me. Shame we need a plate at all really though. Quote
arthur Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Had mine on for 9 months! It will not go well with MOT station! Quote
Chrisbasildon Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Glad u removed that god awful vented headlight panel. Quote

I think the square plate makes the car look as though it's trying to eat a Granny Smith through a letterbox. Nice change :thumbup1: Quote
dutchgold92 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 How do you mean "Irish style"? I think rectangular looks better on the front but ideally a smaller one like Ian posted. Quote
Iangreenfield Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 The smaller 3/4 one overhangs about 1/2" each side of the mount on the bumper a std long plate overhangs way more and doesn't look right imo Quote

GregT Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 Wow, so many styles, but all going in the same direction - smaller. So what is the smallest legally we can go? Quote
GregT Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 Std uk size is a massive 20.5" x 4.4"! Quote
Chrisbasildon Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Wow, so many styles, but all going in the same direction - smaller. So what is the smallest legally we can go? We can run on smaller plates as the vehicle isn't type approved Character stroke is 10mm Character height is 64mm Character width is 44mm Character spacing is 10mm Group spacing is 30mm And a 5mm margin on all sides So actual plate size isn't specified a shorter reg would equal a smaller plate, stick to the above and your legal. Chrisbasildon Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Basically u won't find a plate that overall size, but get a standard uk front plate made with the smaller lettering and correct spacing then trim the plate with a 5mm margin, polish the edges using wet and dry and put a nice radius on the corners and voila. Quote
ashleydc Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Cheers, it sounds like I've got a job for the weekend! Quote
Funkysi Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Avoid large import style number plates on the front - they look terrible. Quote
Iangreenfield Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I got my 3/4 plate from fancy plates.com no need to cut polish or anything just stick it on they even supply the 3M sticky tape with the plate. Quote
Gaz 300 Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Cut a few inches of mine with a fine tooth band saw then rounded the corners with a band facer. Quote
Sir Charles Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I prefer smaller plates I ordered that one from fancyplates.com when I bought that private reg. Was 3/4 size. Just went to buy one for my current zed and they want £20!! So i'm trying an ebay seller instead for £10.99. Quote

princeking Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Personally none but would go for the legally smallest size possible Quote
