so soon I will be getting my car painted. just wondering the cost you guys have payed in the past. my car is fully stripped down and welding all done there will be a little bit of filling for them to do but not much. so what did you pay for yours to be painted. the guy doing mine did a car for me a few years ago. due to the car being stripped already so its just prep and paint and I will put all the bit back on bumpers front wings etc,,,

 

what work did they do to your and how much did you pay

Purple Rain was done in House of Kolors Purple and cost me £2.5k

 

I stripped it to a shell then rebuilt and it was done proper with all glass and the engine out.

 

I have the new zed booked in for the first week in February and its going the same colour :)

Normally the bodywork is the hard bit and paint is easy but i have had mine done and me and my brother in law done all the body work and got the car in primer,

we had nowhere clean enough to put the paint on his boss wanted same price to paint from start to finish even though we done all the work so i asked another company to paint it which was around 1k remember they only had to mask it up, panel wipe and paint it...

but i got it home and found bits wrong so i took it back and they said they would respray it again for free, but by now i had put the windows back in including new rear screen rubbers etc...

which they covered in paint and now thrown in the bin...

The body on mine is really straight and had no welding or rust but to make the paint perfect still needs a good sprayer i can trust to flat it off mask it up and paint it without runs, sags and crap in the paint and some places there is no paint at all just our primer lol...

smart repairs where my brother in law works quoted me 1500 quid to respray from start to finish including paint and flat and polish and they do a nice job, do a lot of lambos and ferraris etc...

Once i sort myself out i will have it done again lol...

Even with really good paint i priced mine up in glasurit cause that is what my brother in law was using before he worked at smart repairs and all the materials came to £700 for base and clear in suzuka grey pearl effect...

Im guessing even most special house of kolor paints would be around that price too...

even with special paint cant see why it would be more then 2k from start to finish...and maybe 2.5k if needs welding etc...

but 6k id rather buy another car...i am really fussy with paint and worked with my brother in law a few times and in a workshop it would take less then a week to do the bodywork, spray and polish it and it would look really nice,

For 6k he would have over 5k in his pocket for a weeks work...i would expect about 4 to 5 weeks work on the car for that lol...

 

i would pay that money if it was stripped to a shell, all bare metal repairs done re primed and painted like a full restoration but not a respray...

I had several quotes for a paint job ranging from £1500 to £10000. Your best bet is to shortlist some companies that you would consider using and get quotes. Make sure that the quotes are like for like for comparison (ensure they know every detail of what you want) and try to have a good look at several of the jobs the company are doing beforehand to scope the finish you should expect. Personally, I think what other people have paid is fairly irrelevant as there are so many variables.

I've gone to one of the best Paintshops in Ireland, His Head sprayer worked for Ferrari in Maranello finishing the cars when they left the factory floor. I was talking to him in the summer regarding a full respray in a liquid pearl blue metallic, he reckoned the paint would be €1000 before any work was done. He said that if I wanted a "resprayed" car, it would cost €2500 and if I wanted a "rolled off the factory floor" job, it would be €5000. Don't forget that these quotes are in Euro, so would be £1850 and £3860. I don't think that either of those quotes is bad. I'm concentrating on getting the car up and running for 2016 and should be able to save for it in 2017:thumbup:

He's building a full on Rocket Bunny RX7 and he's building a wide bodied SR20'd RX8. They're both going for paint to this Dublin shop in the New Year. They must be good as he lives on the far side of the country (Limerick). Pratt's are pricey but extremely good, I get discounts also as I've sent a few people his way who've all been very happy with their work.

Sounds like some silly engine swaps :wacko: I might try this place first as it's only a small job. May spray more of the car in the future

But seriously though - I'd go along with what Richie K says. Plan on c£2k for a "resprayed" car - and c£4k upwards for a "factory finished" car. Although if the painter is worth his salt, then you can get a top job done for £2-£2.5k - just as Lee had done.

Yes, I've been blighted with (what I consider) sub-standard re-sprays. Having said that, I'm extremely fussy too! Having more stuff done to it next year as I'm not happy with what I have even still! It'll be going to the same place that Joel's car went to!!

 

You 'should' be able to get a fairly good paint job for around £2k if you strip the car yourself. One of my biggest pet hates is overspray, so I strip EVERYTHING I possibly car myself. Mine have varied in cost, but that doesn't always reflect quality. My budget is generally around £3k-£4k and with that, you should get something very sharp which is what I am aiming for next year.

 

Personally, I don't really care what it costs, it's the job that counts. The best way to gauge that is to look at existing work. Now, I've seen Joel's car through its stages and I know that car almost as well as he does and his bodyshop have been utterly fantastic. They're not cheap, but despite what I said earlier, you generally get what you pay for. However, I've paid over the odds in the past for what I considered a sub-standard paint job. So it is swings and roundabouts to a degree.

 

My car will be having some work done in mid spring next year which also includes the fitment of a TwinZ spoiler. :)

Something that's not always cost-associated. In terms of bad paint jobs, that could be anything from, visible sanding marks under the paint, to blisters, shadowing in metallic and pearl paints, too thin or too thick a paint coverage, runs, dirt in the paint, excessive orange peal (generally this can be corrected to a degree providing it is not too bad), poor paint adhesion, particularly on plastics or flexible surfaces, overspray, mask lines....

wobbly panels, runs, dry spots, shite in the paint, overspray, sinkages etc etc etc....all you really need is the person doing it to be good my cars (zeds) have been resprayed about 5 to 6 times...

3 times my brother in law painted it previous to last the respray and twice have been in a dirty workshop and the finish was still better then last respray by briley coachworks in an oven...with idiots doing it...who boast they do show cars and this and that and are useless...

It's really hard to find a good sprayer if you're as fussy as me at least, but in general. I've got the best mechanic, but not found the best sprayer yet - spring time though! :)

You'd like to think so, but this isn't always the case I'm afraid. Also, some colours and finishes are more susceptible.

When I had my Zed resprayed earlier this year, I paid 3 figures for it. So I wasn't expecting a show-winning paintjob at all.

 

They did a good job, which even Si confirmed at the Nissan Experience, but they let themselves down towards the end as I think they were rushing to get it finished and out of the door. Consequently, there are little bits and pieces that could be better.

 

For what I paid, I can't really whinge - as Bird said to me, I could've paid double and still had the same end result.

 

It looks really nice, but it isn't perfect. But it's infinitely better than it was when I got the car! :thumbup1:
