Fog lights on same switch?

I've finally made some room on the drive for my new zed so can start fiddling with it now! I've got a double din stereo to fit so I've got to do something with the fog light switch, turbo timer and boost controller that sit underneath the stereo now. The timer will probably go, not sure where to put the controller yet but...

With the rear fog light switch can I not wire it up to work off of the original front fog switch in the pod so the front and rears come on together? Is it an MOT requirement that they be operated separately? I can't think why I would ever want to turn them on individually.

You are on a country road and it's 11pm, there is a least one car behind you travelling at the same speed as you and it's not foggy, you cannot therefore have your rear fog light on but you want the front fogs on for extra visibility .

I agree with the comments above, have you never had some clown driving along in front of you with his rear fogs on?? It's an absolute nightmare!! Your eyes hurt and it reduces your visibility dramatically, it also makes it harder to notice when the said offender hits the brakes and could cause you to rear end him:thumbdown:

But saying that what does UK cars do for a rear fog switch ?

Do they just sacrifice not having front fogs ?

They normally have separate switches Lee, if you look at modern cars, a lot of them have the front and rear fog switch on the indicator / light stalk, one rotation turns on the lights and then a kind of spring rotation to click on the front fogs with a second spring rotation to turn on the rears.

Modern cars I understand as on vw its a pull of the dial and rotate.

But never seen a uk zed with front and rear fogs, would it not be better and more oem to get a pod from a uk car and adapt it for both.

Just doing my fog and I have a bright blue switch which I do like but i'm trying to get something more oem.

Why would I need extra visibility if it's not foggy? If you need extra lights then your headlights aren't good enough imo! As an aside, surely it's not legal to turn your front fogs on when it's not foggy, or does that rule only apply to the rear?

Whether I end up doing it or not, out of curiosity, is it a legal requirement to have them separate? My daily is the same as others have mentioned, one turn for fronts, a second for rears.

As others have said, I'm also curious what UK zed's have...

I have a 5000k hid headlight kit fitted and yes my dipped is superb, could easily get by with nothing else but i also have the same kit in my front fogs and boy these make a difference when i flick the switch, projecting light more at the sides and nothing to do with it being foggy .

UK Z32's use the same pod switch for rear fogs as Jspec cars use for front fogs. UK cars do not have front fogs as standard.

And the fog symbol is facing the other way.

Fair enough, but I just can't see myself ever wanting to do that. It's never even crossed my mind! Maybe I'd see it differently if I ever tried it though...

Fogs should never be used in conjunction with dipped beams, your projecting far to much light in the forefront of your car drawing your eyes attention down to what's right infront of you instead of what's further up ahead.

A fog light is just that, a light for foggy and adverse weather conditions, when your driving slow and need to see what's directly in front of the car because the dipped and high beams aren't doing you any good. Usually just creating glare and blinding you.

I don't know about the UK but here in Norway fog lights can be used in conjunction with parking lights AS driving lights during daylight. But never fogs and dipped together and never after dark. Rear fogs are illegal unless correct conditions apply(bad weather)

No requirement to operate separately, front and rear on one switch is fine.

I'm with you on this one. My rear fogs are wired into the front fog switch, although I think the only time the button is pressed is for MOT purposes.

I find front fogs are useful when driving through the park here at night as they illuminate the sides of the road and we have wild deer roaming. Other than that, only in fog.

Good to hear someone else has done it. I'm no electrical genius, do you know the best way of doing it? A separate relay that is activated by the switch? Can the switch activate two relays?

It's always best to use a relay, keeps the load off the switch contacts, however the relay for front fogs is capable of supplying rear fog lamp bulbs, think its located in engine bay fuse box on the left side inner wing.

Oh so you think (just to clarify) it's capable of doing front and rear fogs at the same time? I did wonder but assumed it wasn't.

Yes most automotive relays carry 30A, you'll be fine running another bulb off that relay.

Great, cheers!
