Projector light issue?

Never noticed this before, but when driving to work this morning with side lights on only, the projector lights were on!

By the time I arrived at work they had gone off leaving only the side lights eluminated.

Normally, as I understand it, they would only activate on the second position of the switch and when on low beam.

Does this setup have daylight detection? (say via the sun load sensor?)

Or do I have an electrical gremlin?

Confused.

you're correct, not many people realise that the projector bulbs illuminate slightly with sidelights selected on uk cars.

Thanks Joel,

This is the first time I have ever noticed this happen.

I guess if I try this in bright daylight and then in a darkened garage, I should be able to replicate the scenario.

i vaguely remember when i had my uk zed on the road, when i fitted HID's i had to do a wiring modification on the back of the light switch to disable the dim/dip

Well, after several attempts to replicate the projector lights illuminating at the same time as the side lights, I could not repeat the effect.

I don't think it is an automatic feature, I think I must have a permanent fault that decided to rectify itself just for today.

Where would I start looking? relays? or something a bit more involved?

Although it is not a major issue, I would like to resolve/understand what the problem is.

I hate it when things don't work as they should.

Dim/dip function Simon [emoji106]

Yup - a few cars had that function in the UK back in the 80s and 90s.....

Thanks Joel,

There's no automatic function - they are either on or off according to the switch......

.....I didn't on either of my UK cars. The dim-dip simply didn't work anymore as there was insufficient power to start the ballast units when only the side lights were on - that said, my current UK spec is a 1994 series 2, so maybe it never had dim-dip in the first place. The old (1991) red one definitely did; I remember trying the lights after wiring in just one HID unit. When I turned on the side lights, the halogen beam came on dim-dip as usual and the HID just flickered like a fluorescent light being switched on!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

My limited knowledge has led me to the fuse box in the engine bay.

I think the relay in question is the bottom one, black in colour.

Can anyone confirm?

Becoming a bit of a mission now.

I have swapped what I believe to be the controlling relay with another but to no avail.

Where else should I start looking? Could it be a fuse? or something more involved?

Cheers Black-zed.

I will take a look, does the system involve a Dim-Dip control unit also do you know?

yes there is a control unit with 2 multi plugs going into it, apparently easy to bypass i did find something on one of the other 300zx sites but lost the link now

bit more info relating taken from a post on here

Behind the wheel arch passenger side there is a green box with 2 connectors going into it, has this number written on it 28575 37P10 PD9. 1 connector has 4 wires, 1 has 6 wires. Remove the green box. Each connector has a red with black stripe wire - connect these two together.

Thanks again Black-zed.

My aim is to rectify the issue as opposed to by-passing it.

I am on the lookout for a replacement unit, hopefully that will restore the full functionality.

Thanks for the identification and location, at least now I know what and where to be looking.

I swear if you forget to turn the headlights off, once the ignition is off it reverts to side lights only.
