In short, how can I check whether it's woeking right? In the past, I've been told it didn't seem to be working correctly. Anyway, it's never really been an issue but something I knew I'd one day look at. That day is today since I'm off work.

It's a greddy Profec B-Spec 2 I have.

How do I know if it's working right? Do I simply turn all the settings right down and see if it boosts less?

For info, I bought a new control unit for it on eBay - don't know if it works or not but need to know how to check it first.

Appears to be some moistness there and in the steering rack too. Might be worth a quick check that one.

Will look in to it next time it's in the air. It's on the passenger side that one.

Anyway, any idea on what the pressure might be etc?

No idea, sadly not got my mits on anything like that so don't have much knowledge of it. As I say though is expect a badge or something saying what the Wastegate pressure is or what it's range is. If you can work out exactly what they are maybe the answers on google. The other option would be to apply measured pressure to the Wastegate and see what it opens up at.

It'd be a bit difficult to take them off the car. Passenger side wouldn't be too be but you'd probably have to drop the engine to take out the drivers side one

Not read the whole thread, so this has probably been said, but to determine the spring pressure of the external wastegates, simply connect them directly to a pressure source.

Yeah, Ashley was saying about bypassing the boost solenoid so it's no longer in the system. Then I'll drive it and see what boost it makes. Is that pretty much right

That's exactly right to determine base boost.

Will have a go. Just waiting for a straight connectors to come through the door and I'll check what the base is set at. Am I right in thinking that it's adjustable with that screw on the top? i think that sets the opening pressure on them.

One of my wastegates was found to be shot when pressure tested.

Were yours external? I don't think the wastegates will be shot to be honest as I get good power etc. I honestly recon it's just a pants solenoid tbh

mine were standard actuators, one was found to open at about 3 psi ( from memory )

the other 6 Psi

Yeah, possibly works a bit different with these.

If you unplug the wastegate solenoids, you'll get unlimited/ungoverened boost.

Would this be the same even though It's got external wastegates? I thought these would be different to the standard set up.

Funkysi - I've just been reading this which advises to unplug the wastegat solenoids....

http://www.thumper300zx.com/z32/profecb2/profecb.htm

Now unplug the wastegate solenoid electrical connectors (one on each side of the engine).

The vac line to the Wastegate is the means of it opening rather than the electronic boost solenoid on the turbo, (not the one on the EBC) those just activate safety boost, do you still have them?

I've got a hypothetical question on this. With the external wastegates, they have 2 air ports. What would happen if they were the wrong way round? I'm assuming the boost controller wouldn't work??? But would it still seem like it was driving fine do we think? Just wondering if it's a possibility

If it was connected to the top ports only, you would get "infinite" boost.

Have a look into how external wastegates work if you're diagnosing issues. They worked in the past, so unless you've physically swapped connections around, I can't see that being the case.

  • Author

I don't know if it ever did work in the past.

I don't mean just the top port only being connected. From the greddy instructions on how the boost controller should be connected and the external wastegates should be connected...

Without EBC

Wastegate would be connected to a pressure source (port in the middle of the wastegate) and the port on the top would just be left unconnected

With EBC

Wastegate would be connected the same as above but the top port would go to COM on the EBC.

So what I'm wondering is, if the middle port was going to COM on the EBC and the top port was going to a pressure source, what would happen. So just the hoses being the wrong way round.

Been out looking round some more and took the solenoid off. The 'NO' was connected rather than the 'NC'. So, I changed that and the boost goes slightly higher (like 22psi was the most) but then the car sounds like it's shooting a flame out the back. And ideas or should I get it mapped in case it needs this. The boost seems a lot 'nicer' when the pipes are incorrectly connected to 'NO' on the solenoid

with external wastegates you are supposed to connect it to the NC (normally closed) port...

Yeah I noticed it was on the wrong one earlier. Been like that pretty much forever since someone was messing with it years ago. I've changed it and been out for a few runs. Still not really sure on what I'm doing like tbh to check if it's really working or not. But here are the runs and the setting:

Run 1

Set boost 0

Peak 23.7 psi

Gain 5%

Set gain 4

Limiter 20%

Run 2

Set boost 30%

Peak 27.0

Gain 5%

Set gain 24

Limiter 4%

Run 3

Set boost 50%

Peak 27.0

Gain

Set gain 32

Limiter 4%

Run 4 -

Set boost 1%

Peak 27.0

Gain

Set gain 1

Limiter 4%

Run 5

Set boost 20%

Peak 24.6

Gain 20

Set gain 174

Limiter 10%

Pretty much. Got some that you think I should input, I'm only wanting to test its working here.

Run 2 was some settings I found online (albeit evo ones).

Run 5 was old settings that had been input at some point in the past (not by me).

The others were just me seeing if it made a difference as I'm just trying to see if the thing actually works at all before I ask you to remap the car
