Hi,

I have noticed to night when I turned the car off some water came from the right side of the car and ran down the path. This is the second time its happened in the last 2 weeks. I checked water level and looks fine, I just assumed it came from the expansion bottle. could it be anything else?

cheers mark

when I say expansion bottle I mean over flow bottle or what ever its called lol on the right side.

The water in the overflow tank should not be over flowing or escaping the bottle. There is a full mark on the dipstick and coolant should not be above this, also it is designed to draw back into the rad as required and expel into the bottle if a certain pressure is reached.

Check that the black over flow pipe is actually connected to the bottle.

Will check the pipe tomorrow grooves cheers. And the air on belt is off at the moment as it snapped taking out the alternator belt luckily didn't drive it as it drives water pump as well lol.

Cheers lads

right hand side?? Is that not the windscreen washer tank?

My washer bottle had a break in the neck which caused water to leak from it when giving it some beans.

Depends if you are looking from the front of the car lol

Through inspection required on this, it could be a silly fault like as described, a cracked expansion tank, a dodgy rad cap or even a hose that's popped off. It could also be an early warning on something much worse, for example an overheating issue where the coolant is being forced in there beyond it's capacity, you wouldn't know either because the stock tempreture gauge is a three stage affair. Cold, normal, overheating it doesn't represent a linear rise and fall. Not to mention is not very accurate.

Inspect the tank, rad cap and for other coolant leaks ASAP. If you have the facility pressure test the coolant system.

If nothing obvious then progress on to get a proper tempreture under driving conditions via conzult etc.

Use "driver's/passenger's" or "offside/nearside" to avoid confusion

That's what I was thinking......

Port, starboard....

LOL - And whilst Graham is right, in that it depends from which way you are looking at the car, the right side to me (on a RHD car) is the side where the steering wheel is...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Ok lads it's the off side and will have a good look soon as I can, only happens twice upto now but shouldn't be doing it I suppose lol

off side is washer bottle I removed mine not saying you should do that of coarse. put some new screen wash in it and when when it leaks if its that you will see the colour or you can smell the anti freeze or you can taste it as in dip ye finger in to the spill and taste it and smell it should be easy to find

Cheers Dan I will do that, the water at the moment looked dirty rusty colour on the floor so a good idea :)

have a look with a flash light in the washer bottle see its it dirty. is the rad water dirty? open the filler and have a look when the car is cold., rusty water sounds a bit odd has the car been standing a while ?

Surely we all know our left from our right at our age? Right and left is by far the easiest way to describe IMO, if only they would change to that system on an mot. When describing anything on a vehicle left or right it's ALWAYS viewed from inside the car, worldwide uniformity applies then

How can right/left be more specific than driver's/passenger's when restricted to territory? If I'm looking in an engine bay, the sides are swapped. Would have saved time in this thread.

Dan the car has not covered many miles in the last 2 years and has been sat for a while before I bought it, going to work now but will have a check over if it's light when I get back lol. Cheers

Right or left ALWAYS viewed from inside the vehicle, it cannot ever be wrong, which is why main dealers and parts suppliers alike all use this system, it is of course upto anyone to use whichever they feel comfortable with. Anyhow getting off topic now

Oh I know how parts main dealers & parts suppliers work, but you're talking about people not knowing left from right when this thread highlights that left/right doesn't ALWAYS work when diagnosing issues on the internet. Big difference between coolant & windscreen washer fluid

Offside/Drivers side is the windscreen washer. Just try the windscreen washer button on the dash. The motors are stuck to the bottom of the bottle and you can access it by looking through the wheel arch or possibly taking off the undertray. Could be a motor for the front or rear washer jet come loose, maybe a cracked bottle too.

Be worth checking checking the radiator level though and maybe flushing the system if it's been sat for too long.

I wonder if water had been sitting some were and been rusting and when you drive it and pull up its making it come out just an idea. just open the filler cap see if the water is brown or not then looking in washer bottle see its that's rusty colour. this should be east to work out.
