Larger battery fitting, type, sizes, power, etc.

Not sure how it come about but approx four years ago my local garage fit me a Banner battery very similar if not a 068 type, it was the one down from the one they should of fit really according to the catalogue but it owes me nothing, as for most of this period I have been adding and fiddling with the car so hence flattening the battery on a constant basis and this took it's toll.

The size of this Banner was 240mm in length, 175mm tall and in width, I think the one for my car they should of fit was 190mm or 202mm tall - enabling the stock clamps to fit.

Below is a pic of said battery on the tray, please note I have removed the fins on either side of the tray - I noticed I could buy a bigger battery length wise.

I could of crudely chopped the end off completely on the tray but in my wisdom I cut this out with dremel attachments.

The new battery now fits on the tray and gives me 690cca and capacity 76aH, it's a Japanese Yausa battery apparently, hence the rising sun logo, is a 096 type which is also 100 it seems and cost me a bargain £47.00 delivered, the equivalent one in Halfords is over £100. The size of it is 278mm long and again 175mm in width and height, it is also possible to buy a battery with the same dimensions but 190mm tall. This extra height will put it nearer the earth strap cable as with my 175mm tall one it only just reached and was nearer once the battery tray was turned 180 degrees, 175mm it could be argued is better as the battery can be tilted and lifted out easy not fouling on the scuttle trim.

This isn't just a battery size thread although the above may help, for the last year or so I've had starting issues, it would fire up when cold absolutely no bother but if I was to drive for 5, 10, 15 mins and then try and start again it just wouldn't fire and the battery would soon lose it's woomph, booster would come out and would help but was not forced to fire it as these boosters only have a small battery inside.

Another problem I had would be I would turn the key to crank but would get nothing and after holding key on for anything up to 30 secs, it would eventually crank and start, usually did this from cold, thought this was the starter motor so one was bought but as yet not fit.

I also swapped the ignitor and the MAF, made no difference.

3rd problem my car would false alarm, not always but mostly, usually within 10 mins of setting and so I couldn't trust it and locked with the key.

Fitting this new battery as been one of the best jobs of late I've done as all these problems have disappeared overnight, starts now everytime with an extremely lively crank as you'd expect with 690cca, if your battery is perhaps on it's last legs or is 5 years old get it replaced - I say come on in the waters lovely !!

The Z32 decal is my little touch btw.

The ebay battery above has not lasted even 18 months, think when i recall don't think it has lasted a year, don't know if it's me or not (car not used much) but it just doesn't hold charge, i don't think for one minute therefore it's a Yausa battery.

Yesterday for instance and of course i had to get the booster on it for it to go in the first place, after 15 mins of spirited driving i stopped and went into a shop, less than 5 mins later and it did crank but wearily, booster on yet again - no problem, started immediately.

Then i drove again spiritedly for a good 20 mins, got home and thought i'd try it, pitiful it was - this battery is pants, do not buy this rubbish !!!

I have looked/done my research, once bitten twice shy and i'm going to buy a silver varta 100 type E38, same dimensions as the above and hoping this quality brand and size, cca, etc, will be money well spent :).

Seems it wasn't then

Yes waste of money in hindsight, took a chance and it didn't pay off..............sometimes things go that way, only £65 for the new Varta .

Chinese copy i bet...no such thing as a 50% less genuine bargin imho.

Had the same one Andy & it failed after 8 months. Got halfords to replace it but still gonna buy a new one soon as I don't trust it.

Varta have the common blue batteries, but call me anal - blue was never an option for my red engine bay, they also have black - admittedly this would be ok but the E38 100 type silver dynamic is what i have gone for.........this also happens to be the battery they recommend for highly equipped cars, my merc has a varta for instance and that battery in the boot is a monster and has never given me any concern in years.

I got the one below for £65 locally, they can be bought on ebay i notice for £65.85 at the time of writing.

I do like the 'low' dimension of these at 175mm height, btw 175mm wide with a length of 278mm which fits lovely again on my slightly adapted tray.

Plenty of power 74ah with a massive 750 cranking amps, tested already of course and as you'd expect very lively.

I've added my voltage display thingy, swapped about the varta sticker so it faced the correct way and added some of my own - trying to inject some red onto it.

I also cut so i get the terminal covers on, positive side needs a shade more work as it vibrates a bit proud but i think these tidy things up a little.

The top clamp has also changed colour to match better from red to dark grey, being this is a shorter battery i have to use threaded rod you may notice.

Has this been good Andy? I guess the price has risen to £82 as a result of brexit, is there anything else I should consider around the £60 range or bite the bullet for a varta?

Another zed is joining the family :innocent:

Brexit hasn't bumped up your battery cost Ali, gamblers have. :P

More relivantly if you know someone with a trade card for Halfords thier batteries are half decent and reasonably priced. Then of corse if it fails in the warrenty period you can go shout at a spotty teenager on a Saturday and get an exchange, which is worth a few quid all by itself.

My car has been in the garage pretty much the new battery's entirety, so i cannot possibly say, no reason there is anything to worry about though, i still start the car without issue but i do trickle fully charge it on a weekly basis, keeping it in tip top shape for when i do use it again.

Halfords Advanced are quality batteries, just don't buy cheap unbranded - you'll be buying twice !!

Cheers Andy, i decided on that varta one, as the simelar sized halfords one had 50aH( Vs 75aH) and 500 cranking amps(Vs 740) and the varta had a longer warranty, for £7 more so it was kind of a no brainer, to buy it once and buy it right.
