So its finally happening after been off the road for well over a year the zed is on Target for its refurbishment.

Last year I started with doing all the underbody suspension stuff to make the ride more stable and after that

I decided I wanted to do a full strip down to the bare shell and start from scratch to create a show quality z32.

After much bad luck and many thousands of pounds wasted on rotted zeds i'm cracking on with the original plan.

So as a quick update i'll post some older picks followed over the next few weeks by an overall progress report.

Starting off with how she was when I first purchased her 3 years ago until the state she is now then showing the

strip down and all the bad luck I've had.

So here she is as I bought her :

Damn Lee you didnt need to take the gearbox off to get to the sensors, just drop it down slightly lol, good practice for you though

plus this

Ah yes, sorry I forgot to mention the washable acrylic paint to keep the kids amused whilst you're graunching. Ensure that they're suitably dressed, that the workspace they're using is suitably protected and that they're fully briefed of the consequences of handprints on the walls.

Also, I assume Brian's post was just an illustrative example, you'd be better off getting them a selection of colours, that way they can experiment and learn at the same time.

Going to replace all the seals while I have the box out.

I'm guessing I have to drain the box of fluid before unbolting the back end ?

What's the best way to drain it when its off the zed, and will giving the whole thing a power wash do it any harm ?

Drain it out of the bottom drain hole or if you only have the side entry, tip the box on its side to empty, you can jet wash the box, but make sure the sensor holes and breather pipe are bunged/sealed as you dont want water in the internals, then give it a coat of silver enamel paint like i did with mine ( remember) looked like it was silver plated

oil level is below the seals Lee...unless you want to change the oil at the same time.

Working on the gearbox today and I've managed to give it a good cleanup.

I started of with giving the full thing a rinse down with a high pressure hose then I went onto

degrease the full thing with engine degreaser.

A few rinses later and a good scrub managed to clear 80% of the old crud that was sticking to the box.

Also made up a make shift stance with some wood and two scissor jacks

After I drained all the oil from the box I removed the inner bell housing cover and found

the issue that was giving me the leak - a home made gasket !

Although it looks fairly real I believe its just been stencilled out of another one.

More engine degreasing I carefully cleaned up the inside of the bell housing and fitted the new gasket

I also replaced both oil seals and also the pivot ball and springs.

Box back up right I also removed the old rubber oil lines which I intend to just block up now.

when you say both oil seal do you mean the input shaft seal and out shaft seal? or was there 2 to change behind the inner bell housing ?

There is a seal at both ends which isn't pictured.

One is on the plate that you remove in the bell housing and the other is at the drive shaft side.

am with you now, the one on the propshaft side what did you need to do to remove it ?

This has taken me 4 days to catch up on. So much has been done. Great work.

Not painting the box though?
