JaiKai - Full rebuild & Respray

So its finally happening after been off the road for well over a year the zed is on Target for its refurbishment.

Last year I started with doing all the underbody suspension stuff to make the ride more stable and after that

I decided I wanted to do a full strip down to the bare shell and start from scratch to create a show quality z32.

After much bad luck and many thousands of pounds wasted on rotted zeds i'm cracking on with the original plan.

So as a quick update i'll post some older picks followed over the next few weeks by an overall progress report.

Starting off with how she was when I first purchased her 3 years ago until the state she is now then showing the

strip down and all the bad luck I've had.

So here she is as I bought her :

I wouldn't worry about the slightly curved main beam part and nor would i bother about the gap at the top either Lee, as I think mine are like that.

When it squeezes down fully it all will be improved but you must get that front edge right, meaning get it as far back as you dare without gunk showing and the rest will take care of itself.

The silicone I used was Heat Mate, I like it.

Gonna do my best.

That's goo if you can and we can prob get a drive down together. So hurry up and Finish her with good intentions will open a seperate thread for this closer to the time so it ain't hi jakai your build thread. Keep t it m8.

Yeh,

The first thing I noticed was the gap at the top and could easily see in.

I've ordered a pair of halo's for mine so will be another week before I seal them up again.

I know Andy has done a few sets but no one has posted a best how-to on getting them fitted so

I was surprised they are slightly smaller than the original inserts and need adjustment to look right.

When it comes to details i'm a fussy bugger with a little bit of OCD so its likely just me, lol.

After all the reviews about how well they fit, people were just making do? I wouldn't seal them in until you're happy Lee, I don't think you're being too fussy, imperfections in the finer details like that will niggle away at you!

Got a fair few hours done today at the garage.

Managed to fit all my new polished bolts for the coil packs and plenum :

Fitted my new wiring harness bought from wiring specialties :

Also test fitted my new z1 polished hard pipes, although I now have an issue as z1 sent me incorrect

clamps for them and it will cost too much to send it back and I bought them nearly a year ago.

You can also see from the pic above I have a buggered battery loom as the end snapped off and its now too short.

So if anyone feels like donating a loom to me or an easy way to fix this let me know.

lastly anyone help identify this plug on the loom ?

There is one either side of the plenum and my old loom never had them.

problems with horns, got two of these horns and I can't mind if the second terminal on them has to hook to ground or not.

Anyone seen these before ?

They also seem to be at two different frequencies so I'm wondering now what they sound like together.

Got them both of my last breaker and were better looking that the oem model.

i have a large crimper mate if you knew the size of the cable you could get a straight through crimp and heatshrink over the top of it. I use it to crimp much larger cables than that

if that's the bit your talking about that is lol

To be honest I broke this a few years ago and had a temporary fix by joining the cables but it was with a screw

clamp and I never liked the join and it didn't look too professional and I could never find the same gauge of wire.

Not even sure what the proper gauge is but what you suggest could be the fix if I can get some proper sized cable.

we used it to crimp ends on mains cables 120mm thick, problem with screw connections is the loosen with vibrations over time the crimp would be solid, you could renew the length of copex that runs along there and keep the heatshrinked join inside the copex. if its 20mm copex I have plenty of that, I also have various cable I could compare it with my car if we don't know the size to get a good math

Loving this thread, you are doing an excellent, inspirational job.

Just wondering if you have done anything to that lovely manifold to stop it oxidising. What's the preferred method - anodising, plating, painting...or elbow grease as and when??

Another few hours done today in the sun and managed to get a couple of more things ticked off the list.

Firstly the radiator expander tank which I nearly forgot about and found in a box.

Then found the filler spout for the main washer so attached that too :

While I was doing that the wife kindly bolted up the pas pot

And finally hooked up the dump valves which i'm sure Si would approve of, lol

While I was doing my build I decided to polish my balance bar and started to get it stripped but I have since

changed my mind after I test fitted it along with some other purple parts and now i'm going to have to

get it sanded down and resprayed again as I actually like it purple matching the rest of the car.

So my new halo's arrived at work today and I'm mightily impressed by them.

They took about three weeks to arrive but when powered up they give of an intensive bright white light.

Used hot glue to fix them in place then powered them up and got the wow factor.

2015-06-16 21.31.07.jpg

They are not a perfect fit so they are balanced on the back then glued together but that is mainly because

the inserts themselves aren't perfectly circular which is a shame as the they would be a perfect size.

next job was fitting everything back together which was a wee bit of a struggle for me to get

everything aligned and looking proper but I got there in the end.

Sealed everything up with a special primer and epoxy made for windscreens which was a bit messy.

Only thing I regret is that the epoxy can be seen from inside against the white plastic which I wish

now I had painted black for a better finish.

Altogether for my first headlight rebuild this was good for me.
