Yet again I am being plagued by a dodgy viscous fan that squeaks and groans whenever I start the car before I eventually get the whoosh as it starts too spin. I've put a new correct sized jap import drive belt from MJP and have had it checked and adjusted twice but it still does it so it's not the belt.

Can I just take the fkn thing off and chuck it in the bin (after giving it the good news with a lump hammer) and replace it with an electric one?

Thats your problem bud..it should not be locking up on a cold start and causing the belt to slip, your getting the whoosh after the cold belt has slipped and got hot increasing its grip on the pully which then is a downward spiral as a slipping belt then becomes slacker. Get yourself a known working coupling and forget about those electric fans as there more trouble than there worth.

Why don't you just replace the VC? The setup works well under all conditions.

Yup - do as above mate...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Are we sure that it is in fact that fan/coupling is the problem?

May be worth removing the fan and coupling altogether and firing her up, sounds like a belt/pulley problem with regards to squealing.

Even if the coupling is driving the fan or not, you should not have noise issue.

It's a brand new belt and I've had it checked twice. Only happens when it's started up from cold aswell

I have one chap, I removed it because I thought the coupling was locking up and spinning too fast from cold, so I bought a used replacement from Jeff, which did exactly the same thing so I guess I'd just forgotten how noisy they are!

Yours if you want to swing by and grab it.

Yeah that would be no problem mate as I work in kelvedon now. I'll bring the controller with me aswell

Mmmm ok, good point. However, there are several belts that maybe causing the problem.

It maybe a case of a process of elimination. Once you have determined that it may not be the fan belt, we may need to look at the power steering/alternate belts etc'

It is the alternator belt that's squeeling although I have changed the power steering belt aswell. The AC pump and pulleys etc have all been removed so there not a problem. When the belts squeels the battery light flickers.

I've had this problem twice before over the last 13 years of Z ownership and a sticking VC when it's cold is quite a common fault I beleive

I too have had a viscous coupling engaged from cold, but it did not result in belt squeal. The one time I did have a squealing issue from cold was from a slightly loose adjusted belt. The other thing of concern is that you alternator might be on the way out and causing undue load on the belt itself.

As soon as the fan goes whoooosh all is well, if it was belt or alternator it would do it all the time

I have this problem as well so would be interested in a fix, thats not expensive

Ok read through again, Looks like i could need a new VC..

apart from Jeff where can i get one thats not gonna break the bank and can i fit it myself?

It is the most annoying noise you could ever have! I expect it's driving you as mad as it is me!

How long is it taking before you get the whoosh and the belt stops slipping? Mine used to stick slightly on cold start if the engine had been up to temperature when I turned it off. It would run at full speed for a less than 10 seconds I'd say before it calmed down to the usual speed for the engine being cold - I thought this was normal operation as other cars I've had with a viscous fan seem to have done the same. I've never had slipping belts on mine though. Is there any chance you have a small fluid leak and the belts/pulleys are getting contaminated? Please bare in mind when reading this that my car hasn't ran for a while so I may not be remembering the fans operation correctly. :whistling:

Both my 300zx and Silvia do that, fan runs at full blast on a cold start for about 5 seconds before calming down.

There isn't actually anything wrong with ditching the viscous. I wouldn't recommend you did but you can. The trouble is you need a massive electric fan and a cowl to suit. By the time you purchased a large enough fan and the thermostat to marry with it you could likely buy a brand new viscous... The reason so many fail with electric fans is the use one that simply is no where near big enough.

Exactly...... Hence I would not bother ditching it......

JeffTT should be able to sort out a replacement; if not check the trading sections to see who else happens to be breaking a car. However with Jeff, you will get good back-up service if it should be faulty!

Well the saga continues! ive just fit the replacement VC thing that was kindly donated by Joely P and am not sure if this one works correctly either.

My question is, WHAT IS THE FAN SUPPOSED TO DO AND SOUND LIKE WHEN ITS WORKING CORRECTLY????

mine starts with a huge WHOOOOOSH when you start from cold but it doesnt stop or get quieter when the engines hot and sounds more like a jet engine when i set off!

The fan makes an initial whoosh sound followed quite quickly ( 10 seconds or so) by a reduction in sound and speed, when running at normal running temp its should be quiet, if still whooshing loudly the viscous is no good, surprisingly common issue.

Jeff TT

Jeff I think I'm in need of a new vc. As I get the same issues. Major squeal on start up when cold, for a bit then all is good.

How much for one posted please
