....But for the first time today, my ZX decided to break down:shock:

As it was a dry sunny day, I thought it would be nice to take it with me on a trip to my folks. I was driving along happily as usual; and as I reached the bottom of the entry slip onto the A41 dual carriageway, the engine cut out. I pulled over to the left and tried a couple of times to restart it - but no. It turned over well enough, but it just would not fire up:sad:

I called the RAC; who were very helpful. Even before I had to say anything, the RAC lady said that their patrol would have absolutely no idea what to do with a 300zx and agreed the best course of action was to send a recovery truck ASAP. She even took the initiative to make sure it was one where the flat-bed could come all the way down onto the road, as she assumed the car was of the low variety!!

The RAC also gave it priority, as I was positioned on a virtual blind bend of a slipway onto a 70mph dual carriageway. Sadly the contractor they used did not have the same sense of urgency; and I had to wait over 2.5 hours. Still he arrived eventually and now my car is at DS Automotive in Aylesbury - which was the nearest place I could think of with any experience of a ZX to be able to diagnose the fault - and so I await the results.....

Richard:sad:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Cheers Andrew - looks like it's the old type then..... Although my car is a 1994 registration, I guess it could have sat around unregistered for a while!!

I don't think the UK cars ever got the PTU update.

Sounds about right Phil - I seem to remember in the USA that Nissan recalled the cars and fitted the later PTU.....

Did you fill it with diesel???.......lol

My guess for the haribo is stereo set to radio 4 ..........lol

Hope this gets sorted out quickly for you Rich and it is something cheap and easy to fix.....

Cheers Russ.....

...And the verdict? When the technician got in the car this morning, it started first time with no issues - and continued to run like there was nothing wrong....!!!

it also showed no faults according to his diagnosis...... So, cutting out when warm and refusing to start; and then starting fine the next day? Sounds more like the PTU, doesn't it....

Known working series 1 to get home then. I know they get a bad press but so many people have series 1 ptus quite happily working.

Pretty sure the problem was caused by heatsoak due to it's location on the cam cover. A relocation would solve this issue. I've got mine near my battery and haven't had a problem. Most people put them under the centre panel and haven't had problems either. The bonus being that the loom is long enough to fit in either location without have to cut and solder etc..

PS. Hope you get it sorted Rich.

PPS. There was mention of Haribo? Don't like to think I missed out on a chance of tangfastic!! lol

Never had a ptu issue, although I did buy a s2 one with wiring just incase but have never fitted it.

It only happens when your miles from anywhere mate..lol

Sounds about right

Think I'll just stay local for the foreseeable future then.

I know they are a million miles from each other but my punto used to cut out when it got warm and not stay until it had cooled. Was the crank sensor causing it.

ive relocated mine to the pass side inner wing...never liked a big black snake of a loom across the front of motor so thats gone now. Ime sure i have a spare Richard, your most welcome to it mate iff you want it:wink:

Early PTU's can fail in two ways, either a single cylinder packs up or all six pack up simultaneously. I would certainly replace that to start with, even if it's for peace of mind/reliability for the future. I did mine years ago.

I replaced mine. Got it free from a friend in the US (they're plentiful over there as Nissan had cars with an S1 PTU back on recall to fit S2 PTUs) and managed to pick up a brand new OEM harness adaptor on ebay for £15. Thought it silly not to change for so little. I never had any issues with mine though and I haven't heard of anyone having issues with them for a while. I think S1 PTUs get more of a rap than they deserve.
