So, I have the rad out and I'm wondering, should I put the shroud back on?

I know there's the hazard of losing a finger, but I was thinking, I could leave it off and paint the fan nicely.

What do you think?

Personally, I'd leave it on. A, because it does stop anything stray from getting wrapped around it, B, it doesn't look that good without it, looks like the engine bay of 2.0 Carlton. Let's face it, a fan is hardly an attractive part of an engine bay.

And more importantly its an integral part of the cooling system. No shroud means lass effective cooling. Thats why Nissan designed it in to the cooling system.

As for painting the fan..........well I cant really say cos my "Naffometer "has just shot off the scale when I tried it:wacko::no:

Nope not a fan lol

Just looks as if it's poorly maintained and been left off because they cannot be arsed

Nope, just looks like an expanse of nothing with a painted fan....plus it's an NA *ducks from any incoming*

Come on you 2, surely it can look nice...

Yeah its fine if you paint it satin black.:thumbup1:

But the trouble on this forum is peole will want to paint it Candy Apple Blue or white and red to match their coil packs:no:

The serious point is.. leave it on cos it helps with cooling.

People who leave it off and dont show increased temps either have insufficient power to stretch the system

or dont drive it hard enough.

With high power and hard driving you need the shroud.

Take Bobgenies car at Time Attack and TOTB. On a hot day even with a high capacity Koyo Racing type rad AND a shroud we still need a huge fan in the pits on a hot day after a run to keep temps sensible and prevent heat soak cooking the thing to death

Yeah its fine if you paint it satin black.:thumbup1:

Mines similar to bobs in regards to the general engine spec. I get the arguments for the cooling system. I guess I'm more talking about the looks side of things

Well I knew what your feeling were going to be haha.

So on the functionality side of things, what about if I only had the top bit? Or is it best to have the full thing

Just fit it all mate, Being serious now.

It is carefully designed by Nissan to help the fan pull cooling air through all of the radiator thus maximising the cooling effect of the rad. At the same time it prevents the air on the outer edges of the bades from being dissipated outwards.

If its looking a bit scruffy buy a new one. Or skin/cover the top in carbon fibre.

As Pete says its got an important job, the yanks recon running without on an aftermarket is about the same as a stock rad. If you leave it off your just spinning engine bay air.

It's a little more complicated than that....

but I agree with Pete & Z32bolt for normal driving particularly in a warm climate..

in my case for example, most of my driving is motorway... even the fan really isn't doing much most of the time.

yes i do have an ally rad and no I don't have a shroud.

I have thought about it and if my driving situation changed I would most probably put one on.

This is a job for me to do when my car comes off the road for winter, makes the engine bay look much tidier and has been said if it's not there it looks like you can't be arsed to finish the job.

Huhhh? :innocent::innocent::innocent:

Actually I like my fan shroud, however I would really like to know how you got yours to look all glossy and smooth car.mad Is it an original one with the ribs ground out and sprayed or an aftermarket one? Eitherway it looks very good.

Also what should if (errm I mean 'when') I fit a performance aftermarket radiator? Fit an electric fan and thermostatic controller?

Only jesting!!:flowers:

Stock cowl fits" Koyo Racing" type rads.:thumbup1:

Electric fans are a whole new debate..................................................................:w00t:

Shroud = pain in the arse to pinpoint the strobe

shroud = pain in the arse to check the belts or change

shroud = pain in the arse to get the 2 top fixing bolts into a koyo while kicking the dog up the hoop because you dropped one onto the crossmember

no shroud = none of the above and during the recent hot weather including hard driving about 1 degree increase in water temp as i also have the thing far more important than the shroud...a fully working viscous that actually locks up when hot and free wheels when cold:yes: so mine stays off for ease of maintaining.

well im keeping mine and i am going to fit an electric fan aswell cas ive the space now ive taken out air con rad so i can put an electric fan the other side just for hot long quews and driving like you stoll it ,just for reasurance.
