Hi

My air con has always been spot on but today it will not get cold. I dont have the econ (or whatever it says) and tried messing about with the different temps etc. I cannot hear the aircon compressor kick in at all and revs dont change. Im guessing that the gas has run out, I did have a look in the glass view port thing in the engine bay and I cant see anything.

I know the gas they originally use is now illegal? What are my options, dont fancy taking it to somewhere like kwick fit etc as im not confident they will know what they are doing or be honest.

Where do you guys go or recommend?

That's odd I don't even have the aircon compressor, I gutted the aircon out the engine bay when I have the engine out last. My revs still raise when I engage it though.

I believe these use R12, might have to stick it on conzult first do the aircon diagnostics.

Where is this glass view port thing? And what is it for?

Its near the engine oil dipstick, close to the battery. Second question pass.

Falcon Performance in boro is where I take my cars now. they should see you right.

Is R134 illegal now?

Don't think so mate; since most modern cars use R134........

.....Yup; most 300zxs will still have R12 gas; which is now illegal to sell. However whilst you can do a coversion to R134, there is also an R12 drop-in substitute. Jeff's man does this and I'm sure that many a mobile car a/c specialist will also recharge your system with the permitted new substitute.....

Yup - and with the engine running and a/c switched on, you should see liquid/gas movement in the little glass viewing hole. If you see nothing, then chances are you have no a/c gas left in the system.

You might be lucky and just need a re-gas; as over time the gas will seep out. But you could also have a leak in the system; maybe a hole in the condenser (little a/c rad), or in the pipework; or maybe your compressor has given up the ghost.

It might be worth getting a mobile specialist round to take a look first; they would probably only charge you a small call-out fee if they cannot recharge the system due to a leak. But at least they will tell you what needs doing, so you can source the parts (and/or get them fitted) first! Forget Quack Fart; they will only supply/recharge the new R134 gas on more modern cars. But is you have a late spec ZX, you might be lucky and it will be running R134. There should be a sticker in the engine bay to advise.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

did jimmer re-gas after build...silly question i know but....

Good point Bri.....

.....If the engine has been out then surely you'd need an a/c regas as the pipes to the compressor would have been disconnected.... Wouldn't they..?

Ahhh i had a sneaky thought Jim would have it covered...check the black block connector that goes to the pump is still connected that pulls the clutch in

Definitely R12 gas then - so you'll need the drop-in substitute. Or someone with access to the old R12....

....I can't remember if the revs still drop when it's out of gas; although I think perhaps it might. So why not check the relay first? Otherwise, it could be that the a/c pipework was disturbed during the engine removal and it has taken the last 2 weeks for the gas to seep out through a small leak.

LOL.. you know me Lee.. usual keep myself to myself... :-)

its your comments that are usually blunt, thought Id surprise you..

R12 is the old gas that is now illegal because it is ozone deplenishing, so R134a is the drop in replacement, but make sure you put some PAG oil in system as the mineral oil used with R12 wont mix with R134a. If the oil and the refrigerant are not soluble with each other the oil will not move around the system correctly, Thankfully the mineral oil and PAG oil do mix so the system don't need flushing or anything. the previous owner of my zed had the compressor changed but did not add any oil, now i have a seized compressor :(

Im sure if you still have r12 gas you will have the old style car valve tyre fittings r134a use a push fit type fitting you can buy a conversion kit for the newer fitting think i got mine on ebay,

ran diag on conzult, all ok no errors, clutch engagement seems to make no difference. How do you know if the big blue fuse in the engine bay is blown?

I never disturb it Brian, just lift the motor and undo the compressor, cheaper and less hassle for me and the customer as often it leads to further problems in my experience.

Did you find anyone local to take a look. need mine looking at now.

There was a place in brenda road, Hartlepool radiator company, who said they could convert it etc. Still looking tbh see if there is a more specialist place.

Ah OK. Keep me updated if you can.

I wasn't gonna bother as I was gonna lose the AC when I do the V8 transplant (if I can ever afford it). But thinking of going with VH45 instead of an LSx now.
