as you can see all oil/water/return are spot on and no kinks and free flowing

disconnected oil lines and 100% oil even to the point there was fresh oil inside the turbine side behind the fan

so will be speaking to them tomorrow morning and hopefully taking a trip over and get it repaired there and then

You should definately screw them over for your time and effort. They want to be replacing it and refunding you the price of one turbo to cover your costs.

had some Emails from them all ready

Old'st at bottem ... new at top

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately we do not cover any costs incurred from removal/re-fitting/additonal parts etc. Our warranty is exactly that, a warranty. It is not insurance against other costs (I know this sounds blunt, but easier for us to be on the same page!).

With regards to warranty, nothing is decided or finalised until the turbochargers have been fully inspected. The shaft bending may of course be down to imperfections in the turbine shaft, but there also many other reasons why this may occur.

I'm off to the airport now, and won't have access to my emails until wedsnesday, but please feel free to get in touch with my colleagues (Matt Waterman is technical team leader and will be up to date with this tomorrow).

Regards,

Tom

yeah thats fine .. will speak tomorrow morning and check if they have core on shelf ... and i have the . paper work ....

i know this is warrantie as the shaft shouldnt of bent line that or bent from new

to be truthful thats the tub i dint bother spinning as it was the 2nd one fitted

now the other problem i have is the cost of items to refit it ..

new gaskets, oil, filter, time ... how do we stand on this .. as if it was a garage doing the work

the cost’s would be mega and that would have to be sorted out .. its not as simple as taking the tub off the hole engine has to come out .... thats the bug bare with it

its taken me a full day just to get at the tub

Hi Mark,

You can bring the turbos down for one of the technical team to give them the once over, but they will need to follow normal procedure and be properly inspected. I cannot confirm whether we have another Gt2860 on the shelf either - this will have to be checked tomorrow. My colleagues will be receiving these emails so they will be up to date. Remember the warranty form I sent will also need to accompany the turbos.

Regards,

Tom

they will probably try to weasel out of it, sorry to hear it, makes me kinda nervous as my zeds getting it turbo's changed by a garage next month...

sorry its off topic but where did you get your braided oil feeds from?

i cant see how that would have left the factory like that thats a serious quality control issue so must have failed after. i dunnow hat could have caused it overheating? forgin object but im damn sure its not cool.

god knows ... i think its down to incorrect temping of the shaft when it was made ... and with the heat of the turbo ... well as u see it bent

if it was something that was ingested they would be impeller/compressor damage to the majority of the blades

the only damage is to the very outer edge tips where its been touching the housing due to the wobble

the Tubs came from the Turbo Dynamics in UK ...

all my fitting kit came from Z1 for the same tubs

i'm hoping to take them tomorrow and get it sorted there and then

was a saving of around £700 doing it this way but wasnt expecting it to fail

luck'y i'm doing the work my self ...

Sorry to hear that Mark.....

.....and without sounding negative (I'm just playing devil's advocate), if you buy parts from somewhere and then get them fitted elsewhere (or DIY) then if those parts fail, the supplier is only obliged to replace faulty parts and is not responsible for any associated labour. As a businessman myself I excercise the same policy for lift components (if one of my own engineers does the work, it is a different matter of course....).

You sound aware of the situation anyway mate; and I hope you get things sorted with little inconvenience to yourself - plus if you push the point the supplier might even offer some goodwill towards your consequential costs.

Good luck Mark,

Well I'm Back from Dorset with a new turbo .... none warrantied like my gut feeling all along ... after inspecting the turbo it failed due to Oil starvation

they found and showed me Rubber/silicone item with in the Oil re-stricter

where this came from not sure ... not sure if it was from the braided lines or from old Oil fittings

so i'm another £450 quid lighter

so tomorrows job is get the engine back in :)

sad ending for you, this is one of the reasons Shell engineers banned silicon instant gasket paste and the like because it breaks off and clogs the oilways.

That is a bummer mate but glad to see you're still moving forward. Have a good look around for any other sources of silicon debris before it goes back in. If there was one piece there could easily be more

On the other hand though, be thankful you didn't buy your turbo's from a company in the US as many do. Can you imagine the ball ache, cost of sending back to said company, they send back to their turbo company, your 1000's of miles away and it comes back no fault of turbo, you have to buy another and have it shipped back. Time wise in total say 3 weeks plus?

I was previously an authorised supplier of TD turbo's and had a very similar problem with a customer, TD with their very expensive and vast equipment will show pretty much why it failed and with new turbo's from most companies, 99% of the time it's either fitting or previous engine fault. In this case the garage Option motorsport admitted not checking oil pressure and non contamination before the oil feeds thus destroying one of the new turbo's. Something you really should do before fitting new turbo's on any car to ensure future reliability.

Good luck and hope it all finally pans out for yer fella!

yeah it was all fresh oil, filters before tubs was fitted ...

now on the other hand ... the garage that repaired it some time in its life when it had new tub fitted

used silicone this was used on the oil fittings around the engine

i did clean it all off ... well i thought i did but guess not :(

Well anyways its back on the rd as from today dont think i did bad i started at 10:30 and finished around 6 ...

thats getting all tubs back on engine/gearbox and all u know that goes putting it back

well happy now lets hope this is the last of it ..... :)

Smithy do you check the oil pressure on the oil return from turbo to sump? How would you plumb a gauge in, is it a case of fitting a sender/12v supply/gauge as if setup in car?

  • Author

There isn't a pressured oil return on tubs its an oil drain that runs back in to the sump directly ...
