Thought I would introduce myself to you guys, I'm on here for help and advice and some like minded car lovers.

I have just got my first UK 300ZX Twin Turbo, it's been stood for 11 years and has a few minor bodywork issues, mechanically it's perfect and after checking the engine and bores she started first turn of the key!!!

A bit about me I'm in IT for a living and I'm also a Motorsport mechanic working on some very trick kit from ex works touring cars to ex works rally cars and special one off builds for time attack and 10 of the best.

Pleased to meet you all.

Daz.

The HICAS system works when the car is travelling at speed. You won't see it moving when stationary. Its not designed to assist parking or anything that dull. I think you'd be hard pushed to spot it moving full stop, but I think you need to get it up in the air and wheels turning to test it properly.

Sill repair kits are available - try Zedworld or Zedcentre.

Cheers bud

You should be able to see the rear wheels turning when stationary if you look very carfully:yes: watch this vidio

http://www.ltd-cars.com/movie-1/nissan-300zx/tSqT_8vxgHk.htm

only if you put the HICAS in diagnostic mode mode :) I think it's something like, doesn't work till 12 MPH, then turns opposite direction to the front, then above 62 it turns the same direction, well, something like that... Daz, I'm only in westhoughton, bolton, the Zeds always in bits, give us a shout sometime if you need any advice, dirtytudor @ hotmail . co . uk

Thanks guys for the info, I have use of a full garage so it’s been very useful so far.

The car has done 42000 miles with a full Nissan service history and I know and can speak to every owner from new, it stood for the last 11 years but is in surprisingly good condition, I have got the car to the point of where it does drive but now the work starts!!!

I have to be honest and say I'm amazed how advanced these cars are and were for there time!!!!

Any help or advice is more than welcome and don’t worry I will ask!!!

Any questions as well about the car feel free to ask and I will post some pictures as I go on and updates.

Thanks,

Daz.

I bought my sill repair panels from MJP, he buys the front sills direct from Nissan so they're proper OEM panels and the rear section (Sill Return) that fits behind the drivers door and becomes the rear arch, get made up by a guy in Scarborough. About a one week turn around on each part, but the price varies wildly, because Nissan won't leave theirs alone, and the guy who makes up the Sill Returns won't sell in bulk, so everytime Mr.F orders, he has to get a price first.

Nice to see another UK one being restored :D

EDIT:- If you're going all out to restore the car to factory standard, may also be worth doing what I did, and swapping out the entire sill, it's not cheap, but it's the cleanest, safest, best way to do it to make sure the car continues living a long time. Rust in one part of the sill, almost definitely means there will be rust starting in the rest of the sill, and from memory, the front sill sits under the sill return, so if you repair the sill return, then a year down the line have to do the front sill, that's gunna annoy you.

Do you have any contact details for MJP please as I need to get started with the work, also ZedWorld have been brilliant and quoted me about £150 for a repair and paint but I was thinking along the lines of the rust is in there so time to swap the lot!!!

The problem is caused by the targa roof drains draining in to the box section I have been told!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Daz.

42,000 on a UK model? That's quite (if not very) rare so worth a bit of TLC. Well done. Some would say that you should do the belts and tensioners and pulleys due to age even though below the mileage limit.

You can get in touch with Mr F through Trader's Forum here or direct http://www.mjpauto.com/contact.html lots of good advice and parts.

Oh, and consider a proper waxoyl job if your Zed's a keeper http://www.300zxtt.co.uk/z3protect.html

Yeah agreed, MJP is very good, he'll tell you every part you need to do whatever job, he'll prompt you to do things that make sense, like doing the water pump while doing the cam belt and tensioners etc. He also gets genuine Nissan Parts cheaper than you can by rocking up to a dealership.

Yes usually the rust is caused by the targa drains, it's literally a piece of garden hose that exits in the sill, it gets clogged, split etc. then the rust sets in. With that mileage and history etc. I'd say replacing the sills as a whole is best, clean out the inner sills while you're in there etc.

I will be going for that Waxoyl solution when I can spare the cash myself, after the sill repair I went through on both sides, it just makes sense.

Thanks again,

Spoke to Mike who has been very helpful and I'm going to start to strip the sill and then let him know what I need?

Yeah that should work, just as a helpful hint, the sill return part will have the swage line in it and about half an inch above. The part on mine that really needed cleaning up was the re-inforcement panels on the inner sill.

Welcome to the club Daz, nice lady you have bought, good luck with it mate
