Today i learnt something new about the 300zx when trying to insure my new import.

UK spec 300zx is insurance group 41

Jap spec 300zx is insurance group 46

Now, it might just be me, but i really cant see why? Why should there be 5 groups difference just because its from another country! Its exactly the same car!! I argued this for about an hour with Adrian flux when they told me the underwriters wouldn't touch me because it was a 'fairlady' import! So i got my quote online instead. it did mean canceling my policy (and losing 6 months no claims) and taking out a new policy, but i saved myself £500 on what they were quoting me on a fully comp policy so it worked out better off in the end. Just annoyed about loosing my last 6 months of no claims, makes a difference when your only 22!

I've now been driving 5 years, no accidents, with only 2 years no claims because of the bulls*** that comes with insurers!

I always thought it was due to different parts that made it more expensive in that they have to be sourced. Although theres not much that is different and in most cases you can use the UK parts anyway.

From an insurance view I guess that would have to fit say Jap brake calipers or Jap alloy wheels as they are different to the UK ones. End of the day the insurance co. has to fit what the car was made for.

Of course they just make the rule to fit all imports, another import could have much more major parts different.

The flip side is with the age of these cars any insurance claim would just send it to the scrappers anyway. So no parts required. Maybe a new insurance rule for import cars this old would be better :)

It does seem to depend on the company, still some in this day and age won't touch an import which is crazy, others it seems it makes little odds.

I think Aqua is close to the mark with their reasoning.

How come you loose those 6 months NCB?

Surely you get to keep those whether you cancel your policy or not?

Who said you would loose em?

You would have lost the whole year not just 6 months. NCB is awarded in your renewel premium

I had a quote off Admiral £390 fully comprehensive, i'm nearly 27. They will get my money

Work this one out with insurance. I'm 1600 a year for a 2.0 GT Celica, asked to change my Zed onto the policy... no difference in price! How do they work this out??!

£189.50 fully comprehensive, limited mileage and valued.

Ok, ok...... I am 41........ :whistling:

But feel 18 when driving my little bute........

Well considering Flux is our official trader of car insurance on a Z32 site and club its not very good at all:thumbdown: and in my capacity as Traders Liason Officer i shall be sending them this thread and asking them why they cant do better for a Z32 owner and club member..

Edited by znut

im sure its 1-20 as well, even parkers and autotrader only lists 1-20 with lambos and porsches in group 20....

Who are you with Al ?

Performance Direct.

I was with Houghtons Insurance for many years, but they could not match P.D.

Al.

Insurance groups are slowly bringing in 1-50 insurance groups to give a much more varied scope for all the different types of car around now. But to the difference for me between uk and import is quite bad..... for a group 41 uk manual TT is £820 and for a group 46 Jap manual TT is £1580

This = i lose.

I'm affraid Brian, I was with Adrian Flux but they just couldnt touch the insurance this year. My renewal was £760 or so for 3rd part fire and theft.

24- 4 years NCB no accidents etc (biggest issue with the Adrian Flux policy though was that it didnt earn no claims even though more no claims brought the cost down, cake and eat it anyone?)

So I went online on money supermarket and managed to get it for £560 FULLY COMP with Admiral! with a policy that actually generate no claims and doesnt have the pedantic and pointless paperwork that the AF policy's do.

Its recently changed to a new 50 group scale, which is supposed to allow more flexibility and that.

I'm with Adrian Flux, had to cancel my previous insurance with SwiftCover when I bought my Zed as they wouldn't cover an import. I'm 32, cost £490 with 9 years NCB, NA Fairlady Manual.

"Dear Mr Rob Wood, Further to your recent on-line purchase of this policy, your insurer has been in contact with ourselves informing us that they cannot continue cover."

If you "cant" insure me then dont f****ing quote me!!! I'm about ready to explode!! I had no problem insuring the UK spec!! THERES NO F@#!ING DIFFERENCE!! How hard can it be!! I'm fed up with Flux direct now! I'm going to call the grown ups at Adrian Flux and see if they will be any more help! i dont want to have to sell it because i cant insure it, but if they keep screwing me like this i'll have no other option! :(

Hiya,

Please feel free to PM me your surname, postcode and a contact telephone number and I will look into this for you.

Thanks

Dan

I had 2 years NCB, went away working on cruise ships for 3 years, came back and bought the Zed, turns out I now dont have any NCB because if your not insured on a car for any more than 2 years, you lose it! Aaaargh, *******s.

Check out Admiral mate.

I got mine insured for less than £800. 25 years old, 2 years NCB on a TT manual with all mods declared.

Just got off the phone to Adrian flux, best filly comp they could do was £2500 a year, so I've got TPFT, £1704. Still extortionate just because its an import, but its the cheapest i can find. At least I'm insured i suppose

When I first insured my JDM I asked why there was such a difference in price between a JDM and UK spec. I was told its all down to replacing the parts, I said that the car had been in the UK for 8 years and was pretty much UK spec now. He spoke to his boss and the result was a reduced cost of the premium.

Hope you've got plenty or vaseline mate!

I'd be shutting down that policy. I was 21 when i got my shorty and even that only cost me £1500 FC.

Flux couldn't touch the quote I got from Lynbrook by a really long way when I had Zedward, that was about £250 a year fully comp, on a classic policy with limited mileage. They wouldn't insure Marc tho as he's 24 and their underwriters apparently won't touch under 25s.

I'm off to investigate my £145 cancellation fee now.....

forty what now! jesus that puts us with some seriously expensive stuff in teh insurance land side of things
