Mines ECU questions
Hey - if you're looking for an ECU and are happy for it to be set up for 100RON I have Ben's Veilside for sale still at £150. Quite an agressive tune, a little more 'interesting' than the SE that I normally run. Set up for exhaust, intake and boost upgrade. Ran my car for a good month on this chip and optimax with no probs. Cheers!

Power loss on hard acceleration...
Check your timing. Mine did something a little similar when it was 30 degrees advanced (base setting). I was getting a lot of detonation as well though... I have an idea that mine was so far advanced that heavy load was pushing it that bit extra advanced where combustion was no longer anywhere near efficient... Still haven't discovered why mine slipped that far...any fresh ideas or access to ConZult appreciated. AdamR - if you read this, any ideas as to why your timing was miles out? I note you had your engine out. My gearbox had been swapped and engine loosened/tilted to allow the work to be done. Ben had a similar timing slip and he'd had his engine out - just looking for the lowest common denominator. Cheers! RobH

Scorpion Alarms
Hi Mike - think mine's a Scorpion 218T CAT1. It seems straight forward enough. The only think I'd change would be to add a knock/vibration sensor as w*nkers on my street have a habit of driving into cars and driving off. I don't think it's an option with this alarm though. Touchwood I've had no probs with it and it was pretty cheap ( HTH RobH

Message for Bilky!
Hmm...that's the address I was using....I'll try again from a different address... Later

Message for Bilky!
Bilky, your email address is bouncing - sorry mate, tried to mail ya but had no joy. You're not set up for email or PM on here. Do you have an alternative? Cheers! RobH

'Air con' noise !?
hi Guys thanks for the input - had a root under the bonnet last night and found the aircon belt tensioner pulley had dropped off - doh! Pretty sure that's the cause of my problem. Noise was due to it being loose I think, wobbling about and causing belt slippage - sounded really awful. Cheers!

Someone help my blood pressure please!
Hi Simon, Good luck mate!! I've identified my problem now...had a root around under the bonnet last night and found the aircon belt tensioner pulley had dropped off (!) Presumably the noise was due to the nut dropping off and the pulley wobbling about/belt slipping before it finally dropped off. Got the pulley and washer back from inside the splashguard but lost the nut :( Not suggesting that your prob is going to be as simple as mine but it's definately worth checking the belts and pulleys on the front of the engine, a dreadful noise for a simple problem. Cheers!

APEXI AVCR Settings
Hmm...think they only show as Kmh - mine does. The actual reading is mph but the display says kmh. Your etc settings are correct - must be as zevans says, dicky connection somewhere - very easy to splice the wrong wire. There's also something about ensuring that the two ground wires are connected in the correct order (i.e. one further away from the ecu than the other) HTH!

Someone help my blood pressure please!
Simon, did you try what Clarkey suggests?? Think this could be the same noise I'm getting. Mine is intermittent when aircon is on but disappears when aircon if off. Cheers! RobH

TPS settings using multimeter
Prob not worth replacing unless you're having problems with it. Pretty sure it's a sealed unit anyway so you can only really clean the terminals. I replaced mine to solve a problem which turned out to be something else - waste of £40 :( RobH

TPS settings using multimeter
Hi Roy, Put 'em across the block connector (not the connector on the TPS itself) - should be the two upper terminals (can't remember the colours). You need some fine stiff wire in the back of the connector to make a connection while the block is still connected. HTH!

'Air con' noise !?
Hi All, Driven to work in my Z for the first time in two weeks today. All is well apart from a dreadful noise - seems to come from the front drivers wheel arch area - sounds like something rubbing/catching, the sort of sound you might get if the wheel arch liner was rubbing the wheel. I've checked and it isn't. Funny thing is it stops when I turn the aircon off...!? Any ideas? Aircon pump? Belt has been recently changed...maybe needs tightening? No squeal just a loud scraping noise - very loud with window down... Any advice appreciated as always. RobH

to break or not to break
C'mon Ben admit to the group what you're thinking of buying instead - Judas!! LMAO! This is a decent nick car, if anyone wants one that's a not too difficult repair for reasonable money you should make Ben an offer. IMHO it'll be worth a lot more as spares as most of it is in excellent nick and Ben knows how to remove parts without use of a hacksaw... Cheers! RobH PS - sorry you're still thinking about it mate but put my name on those bits we talked about...

Upholsters
Chester Auto trim - 01244 371200. Good job, decent geezer, he's busy though so may have a short wait... HTH
-
Upholsters
Hi, I used one Chester - will fish out the number if you're interested. Dunno what a bolster is ;) but I got the door side upright 'cheek' redone for £60, he also touched up the rest of the seat while he was at it with a colour matched spray. RobH

AFM, Dual POP fitting, and even more detting
FWIW it took my ECU a lot longer than an hour to reset last time I did it, hour and a half and it still hadn't done. Ended up disconneting the battery for the whole morning while I was at work to be sure... Stating obvious again, presume you've checked all your new plumbing etc, no hoses buckled or split..? MAS is not back to front...? I'd guess that the AFC is only measuring half as much air as is actually going in, no experience of AFC though so not sure how you'd tell it that it was measuring at 50% (!?) Is there an 'etc' menu like with AVC-R where you can program basic settings? Good luck! RobH PS - where the heck do you get the money for this sort of fun?!?!
-
AFM, Dual POP fitting, and even more detting
Must be running lean. Do you need to/have you remapped your S-AFC for the bigger intake capacity?? You will be running twice as much air as the MAS is now measuring I would imagine...presumably it's only measuring intake on one side now...(?) Pardon my stating the obvious but - ECU reset? :)

Strange noise
LOL - mine's a jap ex auto. It's not a chime, it's literally a 'boing' - sounds like something out of a cartoon. I only notice it because I'm so aware of every little noise - it ain't loud. Dunno if this is the same noise as Keith has though... Cheers!

ecu socket
Use a turned pin or ZIF socket (Zero Insrtion Force - like a CPU socket - if you're thinking of changing chips occasionally) - don't use the cheapo flat pin sockets as the chip can work loose more easily. Stu - was probably some solder flux remover/circuit board cleaner.
-
hicas light
I had this a couple of weeks back - just top it up with auto trans Dexron III fluid. Maybe contracting a little now it's turned chilly.
-
Strange noise
LOL - is it almost like a 'boing' noise?? If so, mine has always done that - not exactly sure what it is - seems to come from the aircon system Would be interested to learn what it is though... Cheers!

air filters
Yep, Halford's filters are cr*p! Like SRAE, I cut the foam away on mine - still wasn't happy with them and sacked them off after a week for a Blitz SUS ;) - never needs replacing or cleaning (allegedly!). I remember at the time someone telling me that Halfords filters fitted their airbox perfectly - maybe a Jap/UK thing (??) RobH

JWT Chip
Hi Mike, A lot have gone for the SE chip rather than the JWT. The SE one uses modified JWT code I believe. JWT is programmed for US fuel which is a lower octane and hence more prone to detonation - I guess JWT would be a better choice if safety was your priority. I was running an SE chip with standard exhaust for about a year with no probs. In theory your car should perform less well with a chip and no boost upgrade as the timing maps are retarded to allow for higher boost without detonation - the stock timing maps are aparrently pretty severe/advanced. Out of interest, I have Ben's ECU **complete** (not just chip) with Veilside chip - I ran this for a while - very agressive, particularly with fuelling, set up for Jap fuel really but ran very well for me!! A bit of octane booster might make it a bit safer. Just putting it on the for sale forum for £150. Cheers! RobH

Yet ANOTHER safety boost Q...
Hmm...just a thought - try pulling one of the small hoses off the balance bar as a test, start/stop your car - if you don't get a different/additional noise/hiss from the engine bay you've prob got a boost leak :) Don't forget to reconnect!! RobH
-
Yet ANOTHER safety boost Q...
I had a couple of boost leaks coming off the balance bar at the rear of the engine. Gave a very distinctive hiss immediately the engine was turned off for about a second. Reckon your hiss is definately worth pursuing. Recently had one of the small hoses (under drivers side throttle body) blow off every time I put my foot down and hit high boost - cable tied down now :D, very easy to miss these when disconnected. One of Vijay's boost leak dummy's is a good investment and easy to use... Cheers! RobH
