  1. A higher octane fuel will (all other things being equal) give a more energetic burn in the cylinder for the same amount of fuel. (I would have said bigger bang except you don't want anything going bang in the cylinder, that's called detonation.) So you have more power on the downstroke which means more revs which means you go faster. Or you can lift your foot by a gnat's to reduce the power-per-stroke which means your amount of fuel-per-burn has gone down by a gnat's. In any case, with the Zed, how hard you put your foot to the floor does not affect the fuel squirt directly. It just tells the ECU you want to go faster which in turns looks at the fuel map, the sensors and [other stuff I don't understand] and then tells the injectors how long to open.
  2. Yonks ago coming back from Thruxton with Team Green, we passed Stavros's (Steve Parrish) Merc pulled over being given a stern talking to by the boys in blue. Found out later they'd had some query over the legality of his reg plate: PEN 15
  3. Ah, sorry, hadn't spotted that. Mr F previously advised take the dash out http://zclub.net/forum/z32-300zx/1212-heater-core.html when someone else had similar issues. But OTOH, when ZTech did mine on my manual TT yonks ago, they did it without dash removal. Don't know how - all they said was they had to get upside-down in the footwell. Sounds horrible. Good luck.

  5. Happy Birthday, Mike - purveyor of fine quality hosting!
  6. £13.995 back in 1990, faster than a Ferrari Mondial 0-60 (6.7sec), bodywork by Tickford, bright red (of course), torque-steered like a bitch in 1st and 2nd, unbelievable pull over 50mph in 3rd, wheel at each corner, not heavy and tweaked suspension made for great handling. My first turbo and I still miss it :) Oh, what was it?
  7. Is it really? Good Lord,:happybday: Mike, I would have got my Zed to send you a card if I'd known :)

I first met Jeff in 2002 at the first Zed meet I went to at the Boat in Solihull. Meet organised, IIRC by Danny of DTA (Hi Danny). And here's proof Given the run-ins he's had with some idiots on this form, I can't tell you how impressed I am he's still involved with Zeds. Always given me good advice and service so it's a pleasure to see him getting more closely involved with the club again. Oh, and hello Jamie too, naturally :)
  9. Meant to update this a while back. Since the fault in the injector wiring was fixed and the injectors themselves were replaced, my strange wandering idle doesn't seem to have come back. Mr F's theory is that the ECU was getting strange signals or not seeing an injector or something when the fault occurred which made it do something that increased the revs. Not conclusive but a reasonable theory.
  10. Since the injectors were replaced, the strange wandering idle seems to have gone away. It's Mike F's theory that the intermittent wiring fault was causing problems for the ECU and when the fault showed up, the ECU tried to compensate by [doing stuff] which caused the revs to rise. Fingers crossed, it hasn't recurred since so it sounds as if he was right. So the old set of 5 working and 1 duff injector are now on eBay!
  11. Hallo Jeffro, I thought I'd posted all this info here before but can't find it. Here's some info about TT and NA Autoboxes, what they are and a couple of workshops who know what they are and what to do with them. They are, actually, fairly well-known if you can find a workshop who knows what they're doing with autoboxed (i.e. not just a shaven headed grunt with sucky teeth). http://zclub.net/forum/z32-300zx/17622-z32-auto-transmissions.html TT uses JATCO 4R03, NA uses JATCO 4R01 Cheers
  12. Both right. But if you drive round with the windows open you ruin the aerodynamics which will affect fuel econ as well. You could also take off the alternator belt if you remember to charge the battery from the mains every night.
  13. Standard Nismo part in Japan and you can get some from Concept Z http://www.conceptzperformance.com/Cart/description.php?II=1072&Car_Type=300&UID=2010101413481280.247.87.213
  14. OK, there are some more contact details from him at the bottom of http://www.supercarparts.co.uk/ if you want to try those. As I said, for me, he's been fine (since Aug 03 - I just looked it up!).
  15. Do you mean "supercarparts" Andyz? If so, he's always been reliable for bits I've had off him over 5 or 6 years.
  16. Come on chap, you asked So don't be surprised if people are giving you their mpg when you asked them to! Now maybe, just maybe, the fact you're getting cr*p mpg has something to do with your other question 13 PSI with no boost upgrade??.
  17. Yes I now realise I was wrong when I said silver ones were fastest. Clearly, it's the blue ones:thumbup:
  18. Sure, we can usually find a kettle somewhere :) Always nice to meet fellow zedders. It's a standard OEM blue with a metallic whatsit. There are quite a few around in various places eg AndyP. He describes it as looking great when freshly washed and in the sun - and at all other times, dull as sh*te. He has a point. Please don't come round until I've had a chance to wash it :blushing:
  19. Sorry, missed this. Hallo oobumblebeeoo, Vijay's right. Does this look familiar? It's out there now but not this shiny :whistling: You'll be opposite in what was the Homechoice/VN stores and server farm and is now Tiscali. We're broadband providers too. At least my bit is, but then there are at least three fellow forum members and ex-members who know this very well indeed. I think we might be the ISP with the highest Z% hohoho.
  20. As a direct comparison, my NA Auto gets about 10%-15% better mileage than my TT Manual. Yes, that's despite the auto. Last year of the TT average 20.3mpg, last full year of the NA average 22.5 (motorway about 26, commute about 21). Currently (since new injectors a few months ago) 24.2 but that might be I've done more motorway miles than usual. I'll tell you in a year! Both stock and unmolested. TT had Mongoose exhaust, NA still stock. NAs do give better mpg. According to the mph on my satnav, if you're getting worse figures than these, you've either got a slightly "off" zed in some way or you enjoy collecting points! Oh and PS, Shell V-Power every fill (since it was Optimax :) )
  21. My stock TT manual gave 17-19 in town (including A40/406 traffic jam commute), 24 - 27 motorway, overall average 20-21.
  22. What he said, doubled.
  23. Best advice on blow-off valves is here http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnetfaq/FAQpages/bov.html Or install these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DUMP-VALVE-SIMULATOR-TURBO-WHISTLE-SOUND-BLOW-OFF-NOISE-/350340578688?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM Don't bother with just a back-box, wait until the exhaust gets rusted then replace the entire thing with a stainless steel one - they're usually louder but the drone on some of them at 2,000 rpm can get you v bored v quickly. They're available in just about any config from louder-than-stock through stupidly loud to illegally loud. Air filters are a common mod but in many cases can result in poor running in the rain without further mods. Before you wonder about the "best path from standard", you need to think about what your ultimate destination is. A proper stage upgrade path (rather than "I heard it somewhere") is here http://www.300zxtt.co.uk/Assets/pdf/90-95_300zxtwinturbo.pdf and there are more links on upgrades here http://www.300zx.org.uk/tech_18.htm Congtarulations on your new Zed. Hopefully you won't find out the hard way that the easiest way to ruin one is to hare off down an upgrade path based on hearsay without doing the research first. These cars are neither cheap nor easy to upgrade well.
  24. hahaha There is only one Andy Pingram. But he's on his hols atm.
