Club insurance
Thank you Mr Vijay, Sir. The agreed valuation thing might be worth asking about - if you haven't already. When I was in the MGOC (gasp, shock horror) they had enough (60,000 or more) members to run their own club insurance broker. Even this couldn't beat every deal. It was good, for sure, but could not be 100% cheapest 100% of the time. But, for those who wanted it, it did offer agreed value. So (apologies to grandmothers and eggs) if you had a car which was "better" than the average, a few pictures and (sometimes) a letter from the club meant you could insure your pride and joy for an agreed value above book. There's a hell of a difference between a stock car (which might be worth £4k in the book) and a modded one of the same age / mileage but which has had £10k's worth of mods on it. Unless your insurance co has agreed the value in writing before the claim, you're stuffed. This even applies to the question "how much is it worth" when you get a quote. If you say £10k you will pay a premium based on £10k. If you are unluck enough to lose it, and claim £10K, the insurance co will look up the book value for a standard car which may only be a fraction. Unless you have agreed value which some club deals canoffer. Oh dear, here comes granny and another fowl embryo.....

Club insurance
Re-reading my post means I should apologise to Vijay and everyone who has put up suggestions. What I should have said was it is well worth trying for "benefits" from a club insurance scheme. They might not be the outright cost benefits we would prefer but they might be something nicer than what we get at the moment. So my point should have said it is worth trying but (because all insurance companies are b'stards) and we'll get something but we should not expect Vijay to come up with a company who will agree to insure all our cars for £4.50 + VAT. I meant no disrespect to the worthy effort. Oops - Gio

Club insurance
I have heard (maybe earlier on this thread) that some club schemes just give the club a tenner or something when people sign up. AFAIK there is no way that a club scheme can always undercut the market. Insurance just doesn't work that way. Some schemes offer agreed valuation so cuts down hassle if people have to claim - which could be handy for higher value / non-standard cars. Cheers - Gio

At last i'm buying one!!!!
Unless you get offered one for v low price I wouldn't bother with putting a standard exhaust back on. It's made out of mild steel and cardboard. What you need is a nice shiny stainless steel one which can have two outlets on each side just like standard. Mine's a Mongoose but there are others. Sources from people like Johnny at Grasshopper or Mike at http://www.mjpauto.com And is actually cheaper than the Nissan cardboard one :D Oh and watch out, SWB and 2+2 have different exhausts. Cheers - Gio

Fixing aftermarket bumper to plastic undertrays...
but I think there are a lot of manufacturers for which aerodynamics are clearly important. Including Ferarri. Despite the mass, correct direction of airflow is better for a number of reasons: downforce; cooling; drag reduction. Any more? Without having the degree - if there is an undertray there, the engineers who designed your car thought it needed one! Don't throw it away unless you know what you're up to.

Clutch bite point changes
I was just about to post a sneery manual vs auto comment in that thread over there when I got a problem with my clutch. Oops. Can you ever forgive me. Anyhoo the problem is that (and has been for three and a bit years) the bite point on the clutch pedal occasionally changes. Not gradually, just suddenly it moves a couple of inches down the pedal travel. Still works fine and everything. Then some time later (could be days or minutes), there's a change in the feeling of the pedal and the clutch bite is backwhere it was. Today it happened again - and the bite point was suddenly about half an inch above the pedal so the clutch never fully disengaged. Would drive around fine but if I floored it, slippy slippy slippy. And this comes after the clutch was replaced in 2001 and the clutch master cylinder was replaced two months ago. Both by the same Nelson. And it did this strange "first one position then the other" behaviour from the off anyway. Anyone had anything similar or is it just my fault for having a very old Series 1 silver Zed? :) And after parking the car up for 2 hours, everything went back to normal. Clutch bite point where it was and no probs.

???
Just fyi we do have a little forum of our own where we discuss things. But none of us wants to be heavy-handed - especially us newbies! After all loads of original members have been around for far longer. IMO, I don't see it as my "job" to impose my own opinions on the forums but to respond to others reporting something that makes them unhappy. Mustn't allow this near-God-like moderator power to go to my head (only Craig is allowed to be omniwhatsit!) lol Cheers - Gio
-
???
Hi Warren, sorry for using your post to try a "moderator's edit" but you did raise the question :) I think the idea is that if people are concerned about a post in a moderated forum, then click on the button and the mods get e-mailed. From memory, I've only had one and we did something about that. I think Craig is the only one who can actually move threads but if you notice, a lot more of the forums are now able to be moderated so hopefully it's getting there. Also Craig did do a lot of clearing up after the last little *ahem* episode. Cheers - HTH - Gio Oi, Duffy - stop poking the moderators in the eye!

Stuart, you're not wrong. I can't comment on what it used to be like as I only got here 10 months ago. But when I found this place, it was well worth the dosh. As Heinlein said - tanstaafl (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch). You can't have "free" internet services. They'll be paid for by advertisers, sponsors, people with an ulterior motive, be crap services or some other fault. It;s strange that the provision of a "better" (technically and bandwidth-ly) service has caused some indefinable something to leave the forum - but nothing has banned people from contributing so there was no reason for them to leave. True, the Terminator-like slagging matches turn a lot of people off but you can't legislate for the actions of children. If there is a choice between a lumpy badly performing forum held together by gaffer tape and a nice squeaky clean one with paid for bandwidth, I'll take this one - thanks to all who made it possible.
