Bigger BHP, but knowing where the limits are?
As already mentioned all parts of the car need to be considered as you upgrade as different bits will be the limiting factor as you go up in power. This is why you often see the stage 1 tune, stage 2 tune, etc. The first things you have to deal with are the limitations in the amount of air and exhaust the engine can handle so you do the induction and exhaust. Then (or at the same time) you need to do the chip to handle the extra fueling and air intake. These are the cheapest things to do. The next level is to up the boost with a good electronic boost controller (bleed jets should be avoided if you are considering future mods). At this point there are lots of other factors depending on the car. The intercoolers on a zed will manage 400bhp ish before needing uprating (IMO front mount is a waste of time as you are then disabling the ability of the radiator behind it to cool the engine coolant which is very important on a zed. Better to use the full frontage with sound mounts). My old zed ran 400bhp at the crank on normal tubs with no problems. You can uprate them with 360thrust bearings to furthur decrease the lag but small tubs have hardly any lag anyhow (this is one reason nissan used two small tubs). Bigger tubs are very expensive but you'll need them to run big power. If you get bigger tubs you'll want bigger injectors. There's a million other things which then become an issue as you get into very big power such as fuel pump (I think I heard the zed fuel pump is very good though??), gearbox, clutch, etc. Then you have to think about whether you can apply the power to the ground, so need to look at suspension and tyres as big BHP is only good for the pubtalk if you can't apply it...

Who has been on a track day?
I find the best ones are through the clubs such as this becuase then you get more time on track and less cars (cue - chav going flying past you backwards on a corner!). You don't need to do many laps before you need to let the car cool down (standard brakes fade to nothing pretty quickly on a zed, and you should keep a beady eye on your temps). Its an excellent thing to do, just remember you'll probably go through a fair bit of rubber and brake pads, etc so there's other costs to consider as well. Airfield days are worth a crack as well because you can really throw the car around and find its limits, whereas on a track you have to watch out for the barriers.

Am I converting
I can' t really make a good comparison between a standard zed and standard Rx7 as both my old Zed (340bhp at wheels) and Rx7 (465bhp atw! :) )are far from standard. They are a very different car. The zed is the perfect fast motorway or big road cruiser whereas the Rx7 is the ultimate A road beast. I've got the RSR edition which is a very limited edition that has uprated bilstein shocks, springs and bigger breaks to standard. Its like the type R edition which you should try to get if you buy one. The performance of the Rx7 eats the Zed for breakfast and spits it out in every possible way (sorry!) except for comfort. Maybe the top end of two standard cars would be higher on the zed but its immaterial as the Rx7 is so much lighter, so its just pub talk really. I'd say the Rx7 sits midway between the Zed which I consider an almost perfect road car, and a perfect trackcar such as the caterham7 or one of those little Lotus's. If you want a perfect trackcar something like the Caterham makes much more sense as its faster on the corners, but its stupidly impractical to drive on the road for normal journeys. The Rx7 is pretty harsh, and I've had to buy a trailor for mine as its so loud and I don't want to put boring motorway miles onto it going to trackdays. A more standard Rx7 is quite happy on the motorway though, just not as comfy as the Zed. Rebuilding them is par for the course so make sure its had a recent rebuild in the past 10k or so if its done over 50k. Its not as big a deal as in a piston engine though as there are very few parts to a rotary. I think a full rebuild is around £1800 and a tip refresh about £600 ish by professionals. Petrol consumption is pretty horrific but if you are used to the zed and using it for A road blasts and not motorway driving everyday then its not so bad. My zed used to cost about a quid for every 5 miles, my Rx7 costs about a quid for every 3 miles (but bare in mind its massively tuned). I'd say a rough estimate would be 15-25mpg for the zed, and 10-20mpg for the Rx7, although I've had 5 more mpg on either car whilst on long motorway journeys. So basically I still think the Zed is the best 'road car' out there in terms of comfort with performance, and usable as a daily drive. If you are just using it for country blasts and trackdays with a few trips to work now and again then the Rx7 is the one, the best 'toy' so to speak. All the high speed figures IMO are 1980's pub talk. Just look at all the Jap video mags, there's a reason the zed isn't in all the track races. The Zed is too heavy (as standard), and too big to be a track beast. You are better off looking at the alternatives if you want pure performance driving.

My squeal
Is this what you think it is now Mark? Sorry I've been away so trying to catch up on whats going on.
-
Ffs!!!
Really sorry for all the trouble you've had Mark. I honestly considered the car near on perfect when I sold it to you. I don't want to look like a dodgy car seller. I didn't advertise the car anywhere else because its a good one and I wanted it to stay in the club. I wonder if its worth speaking to peterR (was SE nissan who built the engine) about if the oil pump was replaced when the engine was rebuilt? I think Mac is in contact with him. I'd be cautious about ripping the engine to bits if you arn't 100% sure its the oil pump. After all its been making the noise for well over a year without any problems. If its any help, I've got an oil pressure gauge that you can have. I bought it to fit it in the zed anyhow. I've got a sender unit as well that I got off of someone on here but I'm not sure if its compatible with the gauge so I didn't fit it. Maybe then you'd be able to get a better idea of the oil pressure and be able to make a more informed decision?

Meet Monty :)
Wow, is he actually yours? I was going on a falconary course to get some experience for keeping them. Ended up going for parrots as they are a bit more practical :) The falcons are a lot less demanding though, just need to fly them every day and feed them smelly chicks! Awesome creatures.

Meet Monty :)
Make sure you do some serious homework first :) They are quite a handful and can get serious psycological problems and pull all their feathers out if they don't get what they need (can't stay in their cage and need 4-6 hours of one-to-one attention every day. http://www.parrotlinks.com/forum2/default.asp is a good forum to find out. I got chatting to some breeders and became good friends and went and stayed with them and their parrots.

Meet Monty :)
She's a Greenwing Macaw, one of the biggest. She'll probably live longer then me :) It'll be like having a 3yr old for 70yrs!! They're a very demanding animal, nothing like any other we've had (we've had most!). Extremely intelligent and emotionally demanding. It's like having another emotional woman in the house :) She's cuddly like a cat or dog, but talks as well haha.

NZR laptop screen resolution
You might find it more usable if you plug a monitor into it as it may display the higher resolution then. You can pick them up very cheap now as people upgrade to flatscreens. 3 21" ones were being given away free on the freecycle webclubs the other day.
