Any property lawyers on here?
Front garden - they want to move it about 8ft, from the pavement onto the inner edge of my garden. You wrote exactly what I thought - especially without seeking my permission first, otherwise it's trespass, isn't it? I wonder if I can screw any money out of them?

Any property lawyers on here?
I bought a new build house back in June (George Wimpey). There is still work going on around the place and the county council has yet to adopt the roads/pavements and put a decent surface on them. I had a hand written note pushed through my door today, from the Wimpey site manager, saying that the council won't adopt manholes not on private land and that they are going to move a manhole from the pavement, in 2 days time, into my front garden. Can they do this? Is it worth seeking proper counsel, or is it in my best interests to just let them do it?

this is what i've been doing all christmas
Sounds less like JMJ and more like Giorgio Moroder ('cos it is). Nice one, chewie! My only thing with it was that overall it was a bit too "synth stringy". The melody line needs to be a bit brighter, perhaps with a touch of brass? Good update, though!

Got the lot, Greg, except for a landing net - always used to fish with my mates who had them.

carp fishing
That'll be in the village of Trencreek on the edge of Newquay (I lived there for 6 months). Greg's in W-S-M so it's a bit of a trek. I used to carp a lot at Bolingey, near Perranporth, and had loads of doubles. It was a real shame that there was a water-poisoning incident. Greg, give me a shout when you come up to Gloucester - I'd go to Lechlade with you. I don't know how it's doing since the flooding, but there is a lake next to the Walham power station in Gloucester (the one that was on the news about the flooding) and that has/had lots of doubles - hard to catch, though, apparently.

Poetic justice?
That's the trouble with news - they never give the full story straight away. I agree, now, that it's sad - looks like he stole the car in order to commit suicide.

Who's in shit then?
I didn't bother. It's OK though 'cos it's her idea - she wants a new wooden floor and patio next year.

Perfect roast potatoes
I'm an avid watcher of TV cookery programmes but no-one I've seen has managed to trump my roasties yet, so I thought I'd share my method and ask you about yours. 1) There can be only one! (potato). The mighty King Edward. Forget the rest. 2) Peeling. Very important, this. Don't merely scrape the skin off. Take at least 2mm depth of peel off. If you cut a potato in half and look at the cross-section, you'll see a white-ish layer just below the skin (usually). We want to get rid of it. Cut the potatoes into halves (thirds or quarters if big to start) and place in a pan of cold water to which a big pinch of salt has been added. 3) Whatever roasting tin/tray you use (I find Pyrex to be the best), put 1/2" of vegetable (important) oil in and stick it in a hot oven (I use gas mark 9). Has to be vegetable oil 'cos other oils taint the potato with their own flavour. 1/2" may seem like a lot of oil, but the potatoes won't soak up that much. 4) When all the potatoes are prepped and in the pan of cold water, drain them through a colander then rinse under the cold tap to remove the starch. 5) Rinse the pan and then fill with cold water, put the potatoes back in and bring to the boil (or use hot water from a kettle). Add a large pinch of salt. Boil rapidly for 8 minutes. 6) Drain, and then rough up the potatoes by shaking in the pan. They should now look fluffy and will probably crumble a bit. 7) Take the hot oil out of the oven and carefully lower the potatoes into it (watch out for spitting oil) using a long spoon. Some chefs say to let the potatoes steam themselves dry before you add them to the oil, but it's really not necessary. Baste the potatoes and return to the oven for an hour. 8) Every 15-20 mins, check on the potatoes. Turn and baste them as they start to crisp up. 9) After an hour (at gas mark 9), they should be lovely and crispy on the outside but fluffy and light and creamy on the inside. Drain off the oil, season with salt and pepper and serve. How do you do it?

most embarrassing moment
When I was in 6th form, our common room was quite big - enough for two pool tables and seated about 100 people. One lunchtime, I bent over to play a shot and let go of a "silent but deadly fart". My (so called) mate said "Urgh, Jim!" and ran away. A few seconds later, about 40 people all got up and left, coughing, holding noses and commenting on the smell on the way out, until I was left all alone. I wanted the ground to swallow me whole.
