Am I a tw*t or would this work?
sofa leather if real would be good for car seats, it needs to be rugged enough to last, plus a sofa is usually subjected to more abuse then a car seat would be.

Honest Opinion : Manual V Auto
id say auto reliability would depend how its been treated in the past, with things like maintenance / being hammered. my box is on 99.7k miles (uk spec tt auto) 1990 as well, full SH up to 95k miles, when i took it for a pre MOT rip the other weekend, it was smooth as hell, changed when it was supposed to, and the car flew even thought its blown a turbo oil seal.

Gas struts to lift the bonnet
pug 406 uses them, are you sure you couldn't salvage some from one of them? they are pretty common down the scrappers
-
Water in my air con
your first priority is finding the leak, or how you have water ingress, the next is getting them carpets dry so you don't rot your car from inside out.

amp conn advice
take it everything was working fine before you disconnected it? but there is usually a gain screw/knob on the amp, you might have this to high so its amplifying the signal change. or you might need to earth some thing

turbo removal
You're more than welcome to come give a hand. though biggest problem i think we will face is keeping the elbow studs from snapping when getting the cats off, unless someone has a set going with good threads on.

turbo removal
i agree there, i don't trust garages, the MOT mine just went for; my car came back and on closer inspection, they had removed my slam panel, and when putting it back, managed to get the radiator brackets on the wrong way round? and they expect me to trust them with a turbo change? when they cant get something that simple correct.
