  1. Well I know a little bit about electrical theory (basically O' Level Physics), I have a bit of practical experience of fixing broken stuff and I have fixed dozens of clocks for people. Radar & thermal imaging sounds much more interesting though! :) Incidentally, I have already told you what is probably wrong, certainly with every clock I ever fixed (with the exception of where people had previously butchered restistors) and it is just a fiddly soldering job.
  2. OK, well you probably didn't need to replace that resistor but you certainly do now. Also, you should be aware that a component measured in-situ will not give the same values as when isolated. Are you familiar with the rules for adding resistances when in serial or parallel? 90 ohms is feasible, so it may not have been busted.
  3. Don't bother with replacing resistors or anything else. Assuming you have not fried it by connecting the supply backwards, all you need to do is resolder all the crappy joints, especially the links that connect the two sides of the board as they are not through plated. The downside of this is that the ones that normally fail are under the display, so you have to unsolder one side and lift the display to do it properly. Also, those gas discharge displays use quite a lot of current, so I suspect running of batteries may not be practical.

  8. Don't worry, I saw your note and forwarded to to Gary. Welcome !
  9. Radio 1 ended for me the day after Chris Moyles left and that Grimey idiot appeared. I don't pretend to be even close to their demographic, but he was a step too far. I bought a DAB so I can listen to Planet Rock in the morning (and Johnny Vaughan/Radio X on the way home).
  10. Hmmm, stupid system ....

  12. So you're going standard, standard, standard, except the paint .... What's the odds that in a year or so time we'll be reading about you getting a respray with original Nissan paint ? :)
  13. That is nonsense, that has never been the cause of any clock I have ever fixed, in fact on occasion I have had to repair the damage someone has done trying it. All you need to do, as I have said a number of times before, is resolder every joint on the board, taking special care to do the ones that link both sides of the board, including the ones under the display. Which does mean you have to remove the display.
  14. I know of someone who had a Lotus Europa that caught fie on the A1 at Hatfield. It burnt so hot that it melted the lamp post he stopped near which collapsed on the car. Also someone who's Lotus Sunbeam, which had just been immaculately restored, got about 50 yards outside the village, caught fire and melted the tarmac.
  15. The Halfords Pro stuf is on sale at the moment. Like AndrewG though I just tend to buy whatever specialised set I need at the time. Most of my sockets are a bit of a mixture, but I do have a nice set of 1/4"drive Facom sockets that I bought for about £30 about 25 years ago.
  16. Why can't they shoot that idiot Tim? It would be a great program without him.
  17. Danny is on Facebook, his name popped up on my "People you may know list" a few days back.
  18. Perhaps you could have a "before and after" restoration ! :)
  19. Conductive silver paint. Mask the gaps with tape, it worked ok for me, although I think I only had one or two breaks.
  20. And the perfect colour too !
  21. You need to write yourself a business plan, a financial one that will make it clear how much more work you need to do in order to pay the additional overheads. If that needs an additional employee in order to make the numbers stack up, then that is a significant change. Like someone said earlier, what about a dedicated workspace at home, e.g. a log cabin in the garden?
  22. You need a friendly and competent welder to do that, as they don't like taking the risk of messing with structural braking components.
  23. Isn't there a timing loop just downstream from the PTU?
