If i remember right

obd 2 uses a 16 bit ecu and obd is 8 bit

totally different

Hi Joel,

First of all - no, it is not possible to convert a OBDI car to OBDII. Completely different protocols and interrogation methods.

Secondly, why would you want to convert? There is no benefit to it as the car's sensors and ECU won't handle the data streams.

As far as I'm aware none of the Z32's were OBDII as it wasn't a requirement in Japan (unlike in Europe). I could be wrong here but it would surprise me if it was changed.

When they brought out the Z33 they switched to a new protocol that was different yet again to OBDII.

I always presumed 1996 onwards are OBDII , but never looked into it?

OBDII does have advantages when it comes to data reading software availability. I imagine your looking at the range of OBDII add-ons available for your Carputer?

Thats what i thought

96 US zeds are obd2 compatible and have 2 diag plugs (both the grey DDL that all Zeds have and a white OBD2 plug).

It was made obd2 compliant in the US only because of strict US regulations.

all other zeds (europe/japan/australia) were OBD1 up to the last model ('99)

i wish mine was obd2 as i have the computer thing that reads them

There are quite a few pieces of software that will read the Nissan ODB1 ECU.

Conzult and Datascan being the most popular.

thanks for the input guys.. correctomondo dave about the obd2 add-ons for my car pc... as you prolly know, the front end software (centrafuse) has an inbuilt obd2 reader built into it which shows just about everything i need to see.

i currently have a live datascan feed which can be opened through centrafuse but unfortunately when i open the 'dashboard' function it opens it up in a new window which sits over the top of the front end rather than inside it :(

maybe i should start a new thread for peeps experienced with hacking source code... i need the dashboard function to come straight up when i click the datascan exe?
