The original thread is here. http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=109659&highlight=single+turbo+conversion

But just to update you all, it's still going on. I had the car on the road with a tempoary (but dodgy) ngine which I blew up last month! In the background Jimmer has been building me a new engine with Wiseco pistons, eagle rods, cometic head gasket and 800cc injectors which is almost done.

So with the engine dead it was time to get started on the next stage so the old engine is out and today the autobox is out,all the piping for the TT system is out, hicas is out and lastly air con is out :smash:

I'm sure the car will be 100kg lighter by the time it's all gone!! So going back in is a manual box and the new engine with the T78 turbo, I will post some pics in the next few days, right now I'm off for a well earned :duffer:

This is awesome!

I like your bravery for having a go! no harm in trying!! :)

It's the kind of thing you see in ppc mag!

Thanks to Tubz for the assistance this morning and the other forum members who helped with the flywheel even after ANC lost the 1st one

So the engine is now sat in the car with the manual box, even tried the manifold templates and they fit! Loads of room down the sides, will post some pics tomorrow :duffer:

This is one thread i am constantly watching,

Cant wait to see the results, i admire you for trying something different.

Keep us posted.

Engines in and I am now putting all the bites back so I can check the route for the manifolds. You can see the end of them on each side, a little rusty tho but they are only templates.

I missed something... where's the turbo going to be?

Picture 4, there is a U going on the manifold you can see which site the turbo infront and to the right of the water pump pulley. It will point fowards to where the intercooler will sit.

have you got to remove motor again to do manifold work??

Nope! that's it unless there is a motor problem, all manifold and turbo work can be done without touching the motor

Well the old cliche- do you want the good news or the bad news???

Bad news

Janspeed who were doing the exhaust manifolds have decided after having the patterns for 5 months can't do them for another 3 months :(:headvswal:rant: Not a happy bunny! This happened a few weeks ago and TBH honest I almost pulled the plug on the project as the deal they offered was unbeatable and I have almost no money left in the budget. But I had stripped out the whole turbo system, IC's, metal piping, the lot but I was determined to press on.

Good news

I have found another company who offered me some good advice on designing the manifolds (again :( ) so I have made version 3 and I am happy with the further improvements so today I have ordered all the stainless parts to make up the real manifolds. All I have to do it cut them and tack them together and send them off, they will weld them all together properly so a weekend of weldinng. This is a big step as once this is done I can site the turbo and sort the intercooler and piping then try starting her up.

Have you thought about welding them yourself? You can get a DC tig set off ebay for about £80 which will do good welds on SS with a little practice.

I'd never welded before I started doing the oil lines etc on mine and they've all gone OK, no leaks and by the end they even looked neat.

I have thought about it, I am happy welding but mine won't look nice and also manifolds are critical, if they welds aren't perfect they can crack so better safe than sorry.

... we're all waiting

I know, if Janspeed weren't a bunch of idiots I'd have the turbo in by now.

BTW the way wouldn't mind someone who could map cars, know anyone :)

Maybe a swap for parts that you need ;)

have you tried every possible custom exhaust manufacturer?

Quite a few but have been quoted £1K upwards and I haven't got that much, spent it on ther things as I set a budget for each section of the job and since the Janspeed thing is gone I have to get as close to that cost as poss and £1k ain't anywhere near  It has put me back about 6 weeks and now it's blo*dy cold in the garage!

i can imagine this is the biggest pain in the bum for you now, although it is a bit of a crazy system. there is a place near me that only manufacture crazy systems like yours called 'JP exhausts' in macclesfield, give em a call if your still searching mate

Strangely enough that's who's helping me out, talking to Jim and Rick there.

cant wait for this to be finished and see what it drives like and what the power levels will be like

ah, ok, i remmember going there once and calling one of them a tool to the other because he was a bit seemed a bit of a twat, turned out to be his brother.
