OEM oil filter information.

I always replace my oil filter with a Nissan OEM one. They aren't expensive and being OEM will be good quality...probably made by Coopers anyway! LOL

I found out some information today that I am unsure of and want clarification.

The OEM filter for our cars (55U) has been discontinued by Nissan so they aren't available. The replacement filter that fits (55Y) is missing the unidirectional valve of the original.

I believe unidirectional valves are there to prevent backflow?

Apparently, Wix make a filter for the Z32, which is constructed with an anti drain-back valve just like the original 55U.

Anyone clarify any of this?

Dunno, I always go with champion filters, they seem to come out well in all the tests and seem to have the correct balance between flow and filtration!

Wondering now what level the filter actually filter down to. Do they have a micron rating?

I have used a nissan one, blueprint one and just bought a fram one which is going on tomorrow

I am sorry to say fram come out really poor in all the tests :(

Si there is no perfect world with filters as you improve filtration the flow decreases, what is best as probably with everything in life is a balance between the two :)

I agree to a point. It depends on the technology in the filter media and how efficient they are (Beta ratio). Not sure how good the tests are on these to find out nominal flow and differential pressure.

I did hear that Fram were said to be poor.

Fram are crap filters dont use them full stop.

Wix is part of Quinton Hazell so generally good quality parts, and i have been using wix fuel and oil filters for years on my Z without any problems whatsoever, The wix oil filter does have a anti drain-back valve just like the original 55U as i checked this before i started using them.

I have a new wix oil filter here somewhere i can take a pic so you can see if it's any help.

I think the one the comes out top is the mobil1 filter but they are uber difficult to get hold of! An easier to get but not as good a quality one is the K&N oil filter made by the same people apparently!

wow its just a filter guys........

Sorry mate, but that's a pretty dumb thing to say. Bit like saying 'it's just oil'. Other than det problems melting pistons, oil contamination is the single biggest thing to cause engine failure, scored pistons, bearings etc.

It's paramount you have a good lubrication system and a good level of filtration. If you're using a crap filter with poor efficiency and low dirt holding capacity, you could be storing up problems.

Sure, tolerances in engines are nowhere near as tight as say, a hydraulic system where expensive stress resistant filters running at extreme high pressures are critical, but the theory is still there.

haha just wanted to spark you off haha, it worked didnt it ;)

i change my oil every 1000 miles, dont want dirty oil in my turbos thanks ;)

Looks like I'll be using a stock filter if chris has one tomorrow then, I'll take the fram one back and get me 3 quid back!

Yes please. Also, where did you get yours from?

Hi bud, ill take pics in the morning and post them here, i got it from where i used to work a but they bought the motor world company about 6 months ago and they stock them there now if there is one near you, or if not they are a st supplier to a company called kevin cooper. Or lucas. The wix part number for the TT oil filter is WL7143. Wix is also the company who design build test and supply all oil filters to most new car manufactures and they are widely used in american motors and drag n stock cars.

I think the most important bit is the anti-drain valve. The couple of seconds or so it takes to re-pressurise your system can have catastrophic effects on a well used engine after all its the oil that sits between the big ends /main bearings and your crank. We all know what happens when these surfaces touch..........they wear. So, always get a filter with the non-return valve, I would not worry about filtration quality as you can change it more often.

The original filter was discontinued many years ago (about 6 years ago), so everybody has been using the current Nissan OEM filter (55Y) since then.

i would'nt change my oil every 1000 miles if i were you jimmy, it can actually do more damage cos it can ruin the seals so be carefull with that.

this is also true, i've just spoke to my contact at nissan and he's confirmed that most nissan filters are the same, i.e z32 is the same as a P10 primera, 200sx, 100nx and so on so on.
