OEM oil filter information.

I always replace my oil filter with a Nissan OEM one. They aren't expensive and being OEM will be good quality...probably made by Coopers anyway! LOL

I found out some information today that I am unsure of and want clarification.

The OEM filter for our cars (55U) has been discontinued by Nissan so they aren't available. The replacement filter that fits (55Y) is missing the unidirectional valve of the original.

I believe unidirectional valves are there to prevent backflow?

Apparently, Wix make a filter for the Z32, which is constructed with an anti drain-back valve just like the original 55U.

Anyone clarify any of this?

Thanks for that. Sorry it took me 6 months to say that! It reminded me of something. Just found a chap selling old/obselite Nissan dealer stock and hoping that he may have a couple of new 55U laying about. :)

I shall.

Can anyone confirm whether this is 55u or 55y? OE part number 15206 j1700

Topless??

How do you know if your filter has a back flow thingy

Get a data sheet from the manufacturer. Most are known about. WIX, K&N and Mobil1 all use anti-drain valves. Nissan don't anymore, nor do FRAM, Coopers and a lot of the cheaper brands.

How do you know if it is a 55u or a 55y? I've got a couple of filters (A5208 H890C) on my desk and can't find this marking on any of them.

Fram filters are ok but i wouldnt use one on my zed lol, in will get some pics up of solid auto and adl (blueprint filters) tomorow.

Hi Si

I was intriged by your points re filters and came across the following on a forum- surprised @ the OEM filter construction- what are your thoughts?

4th post down- comparative filters opened up.

Interesting stuff. That looks to me like an early one (55U) as it has the anti-drainback value which new filters don't have. I've not heard of the Purolator filter, but it's a more modern design. I am guessing it's a US market item.

Nissan filters may be made by various companies. They won't be made by Nissan themselves. They could be made by Balwin, Sogefi or any other number of filter manufacturers supplying to the OEM.

I'm not disputing the results given at all.

The number of pleats isn't always a reference to the filtering ability. It's partly down to the media, what its beta ratio is and what its micron rating is.

The OEM filter does look poorly constructed. BUT, it does have a bypass valve which, is essentially why the cap doesn't need to be manufactured from metal. It doesn't need strain relief in that part of the filter as the idea of the valve is, to release pressure when the filter is blocked and the pressure drop overcomes it. The Purolator filter doesn't have this option. It's simply a larger filter with a higher dirt carrying capacity, BUT in-turn, may give a higher pressure drop, which, can be as bad as having a crap filter.

The only way to see if the filters were better than each other would be to flush them with contaminated lubricant for a set period and then to check the fluid with a particle counter.

Horrendous spelling.

Yes and the washer should be supplied with the filter, just make sure you ask for it. I forgot when I went to Nissan last and they didn't give me one! LOL

MJP will send you a filter.

Cheers funky si,
