How quick is an M3?

And is my zx broken? or is it normally to get totally smoked off the road by an R plate BMW M3?!

How demoralising! smile.gif

are you manual or auto?

ive dragged a few stock and once i hit 3rd gear i generally have at least one car length on them (im manual) I even beat one after missing third gear on first hit

Mike

I always beat M3s off the lights, manual running 12 psi

Stock Auto.. trouble is it was a *big* difference... not just a close run thing where I couldn't quite catch him.. he just wafted past me at 120.

Git.

i cruise in an auto, but never try racing cos i know there is enough difference between an auto and manual to leave an auto eatin dust!! smile.gif

An M3 is a fast tool, deserving a little respect.

As you have just found out.

(just saw this in a mag)

Peak power of 338bhp isn't hit until 7900rpm but on the road this doesn't really matter as power delivery is incredibly smooth, pulling continuously from 3000rpm through to the red line at 8000. The lack of any notable thump in the back makes this car deceptively quick - something which is underlined by the handling.

I got blow away buy a TVR when I bought my first Z.

And the lads on here made me feel a little better about it.

So I hope you don't feel to dissapionted, but thats life.

The Bmw probably had 30,000 on the clock and you probably have a lot more.

When you Get a GT-R you will feel a lot better wink.gif

THERE WOZ A M3 AT SANTA POD IT DID 4 RUNS DOWN THE STRIP AND ITS QUICKEST TIME WOZ 16 SECONDS I DID IT IN 14 WOZ MY FASTEST AND MINE IS A STANDARD AUTO MAYBE I JUST GOT LUCKY. THE ONE THAT YOU RACE SOUNDS LIKE ITS WELL TUNED UP!DONT GIVE UP MATE SHOW HIM WHOS BOSS.

Just another 5p worth, Every BxxxxxD has an M3 anyway.

You don't want to be one of the sheep do you?

It's not just about bhp (but it helps)

Rick

Rick - I think your on about the new E46 M3 mate.

Nix, if it was a R plate that would be an E36 3.2 Evolution, the stats are:

321 Bhp

If it was the plain old E36 M3 that would be:

286 Bhp

Nice cars if they have'nt got the common VANOS problems.

Very expensive to tune - hence why a friend got rid of his and got a 1991 Alpina B10 instead(can reach 400+Bhp due to some boost trickery).

Cant beat turbos for ease of tuning - just swap em for bigger ones!! biggrin.gif

Trev

You are probably right Trey, but even so 321bhp is not bad with no turbo.

I still wouldn't want to be one of the sheep though!

An old boss of mine had a B10 as his second car ! His first car was a B12 which was a 6 litre monster based on the 850. I had a very little drive of it. Had a semi automatic gearbox which felt really weird. It did have a clutch but it was operated by servos using detectors in the gearstick mechanism.

Amazing technology but then he had the money to maintain it !

Ok I don't want to start a war, but I had an M3 evo convertible for a month or so while my friend it's owner was on holidays.

At the time my Z was an auto and the M3 wiped the floor with it.

Since converting to manual the opposite is true, the Z now wipes the floor with the M3.

Go figure as the americans say smile.gif

Is there any car you haven't driven in County Cork!??? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

if it makes you feel any better i got my ass kicked of an m3 on a n plate so it wasnt an evo in my 200sx s13 but now i have a 300zx twin turbo im looking for revenge i watched the 300zx advert and if it can outrun a plane then a m3 shouldnt be a problem lol

Revenge is mine!!!

out last night.. *totally* trounced an 01 plate M3 without even breaking much of a sweat... gained a little on the straights but he was badly outmatched on corners... ha ha ha...

as an attempt to save face I'm not usually easily suckered into giving it a quick punt.. but I was in the mood the other night.. and last night was revenge!

He scowled at me big time at the lights.. I just thought "ha ha.. you just paid £40k for that.. and mine's 12 years old!!"

Ahhh life is good smile.gif

nice one, gotta show these Bemmer drivers smile.gif

the thing is, in another 12 years time the zeds will still look better than any beemer smile.gif

My advive for those driving a stock Auto is Never try racing a Manual car at high speeds.

From standing still Yes. But rolling on highway No.

That is because you dont have the advantage of shifting and redline gears.

I am driving an Auto Stage III Twin Turbo and I know that at high speeds you dont feel the car pushing too much. When at 3rd gear you can do nothing else but keep the gas at full throttle. The rest is up to the computer to handle.

If you want to race then line up your car with the other from standing still or rolling up to 30/40Km max and then punch it.

Also a manual clutch and those skinny little dog box gears are going to sap a hell of a lot less power than a torque convertor and those big planetery gears slushing around in ATF.

Or should I just get my coat...

M3's are restricted to 155mph.

However they can be derestricted just like our cars. Should be good for about 180mph after that.

Only the EVOs are restricted.

I was in My mates M3 pre evo, we hit a max of 164 at around 7500, it didn't want to go any faster. I think u might get 165 to 170 out of the EVO it just runs out puff and its drag kicks in, u need more horsepower then 330hp to hit a true 180.

Having driven both, the Zed will outdrag an M3 from 120 onwards easily, a boosted Zed thats no competition!!!

Not trying to take anything away from you, but he wasnt trying, no matter what you say...or he was a real shit driver, theres no way you can outmatch a new m3 as you say - maybe you are as fast - i doubt that too and as for the corners, i thinnk the m3 would have you there too.

Not all M3's are equal ! Performance on the best ones though is so similar to the 300zx that it's down to driver skill who comes of best.

nix said he was better on the corners. From experience I'd say that you can get an M3 around a corner quicker than a Zed.. So a big thumbs up to nix for knowing how his car handles or a big thumbs down to the M3 driver for being a shit driver.

However to say that the M3 driver wasn't trying is doing a huge disrespect to a Zed.

However if it's the latest M3 you'll probably need some mods and some luck!

How hot? How does 0-60mph in 4.8 sec and 0-100mph in 11.5sec grab you? Not crazy enough? How about a standing quarter of 13.3sec and a 30-70mph time of 4.3sec, the latter nearly half a second quicker than the old M3, which was itself no slouch when up against the stopwatch.

I know the stats on the new M3, and I was well aware I'd not got much of a chance on straight road.. but we're talking short sprints between roundabouts (this is Milton Keynes), and from the way he was driving I'd say he's not 100% confident with pushing his car, some tail sliding but at wrong bits of the corners..

so.. I'm quite happy to humble my zed in the face of the M3.. to be fair a new M3 *should* trounce it, given the price tag, engine size and the amount of gadgetry BMW piled in it! But, again hats off to how the zed tackles these MK roundabouts!

When i went to max power live you only had to hear how loud the cheers were for the 300zx of b12andy compared to the cheers of TWO silver M3's. There are lots or beemers, but only one Z!

I think that's one of the things I love most about my Z.. it's so sexy, so much more character.. and it's still funny when people ask "what is it?".

Got asked the other day if it was a Renault Alpine! smile.gif

Lots of cars are faster than the Z, and yes.. an M3 could best it, a new Supra TT in the right hands would fend of the Z.. but lets face it, the Z does all this with 12 year old tech, and looks that still turn heads.

300zx... you gotta love it smile.gif
