having owned a fast road auto and now a manual 300zx i find the manual box rubbish, its notchy not very precise and now the dump valves going off every 2 seconds pisses me off.

my FR auto would kill my manual every day of the week.

2 different clutches in mine and its still shite.

Ditch the dump valves and stop moaning about them! They don't do anything anyway. LOL

Early manual boxes are crap and are as poor as autoboxes. A good second gen manual box is far superior. Redesigned syncros, gears and tougher bearings. Gear selection is slick and precise. Have you replaced the gear selector bushes and put some better/replacement gear oil in? Standard clutches are crap, but so are standard autoboxes.

Autos are ok and easy to drive, but uninvolving and you have no engine braking with them.

Modified Skyline R33GT-R gearbox or second gen Z32 manual box is the way to go.

i quite fancied a manual conversion til now. looks like my gearstick will be handled by the fairlady til further notice

but driving a manual is really driving...not like bumper cars ..you actually have to do something, and that´s half the fun !!

I´ll get my coat before all the other auto drivers show up >>>>

im sorry, but manuals are NOT crap.

whether youve got prehistoric fluid, shagged synchros or *****x'd linkages, manuals are not crap.

Autos take so much of the experience away from driving the zed!!!!

8ace manuals are the way to go and dont let any tell you any different!

there are no other auto lovers... at least not ones that think manuals are crap! so your safe... manuals all the way :hyper:

Autos aint so bad from what I've driven of her. you get to be lazy around town in traffic is quite enjoyable at time esspecially where I live on the weekend it take 25 mins just to get to an open road. this summer will make my decision as to wheter it will stay an auto or not

My fast AUTO road box was far superior to the brand new piece of shit manual box that I replaced it with

Marcus, think your box must be clapped... there good boxes, and a nice change on them, and you cant drive an auto properly, no comparision im afraid.

I love my auto lex, but no not in a Zee car...

My Zed is my first auto and its spot on.

I'd have another auto anyday.

Quite right too - I am very pleased with my auto...

well you will buy second rate parts macca ;)

It was BRAND NEW and still in the bloody crate

thats why it didnt work fella, you need to fit the thing for it to work!

was that for a resistance to nearly 600hp of 'im gonna chew this box up and spit it out' type superior... or you actually found it quicker/better to drive?

I have to put my hand on my heart and say in all honesty that my fast auto box was an absolute pleasure to drive and I really do miss it.I have always owned manual cars and was never keen on autos.

I was lead to believe that the fast road box that I took out was good for around 500bhp Peter always said my car would make over 600 on 98 octane fuel and 700+ on race fuel so I felt that I had to go the manual conversion route. After reading that they were good for 600+ YEA RIGHT! The box started to give up shortly after the car was run in and I was only developing 400rwhp :headvswal

iv got an automatic bmw 540i and yes it is very very smooth and easy to drive, and i love it! But, when you have a sports car like a zed whats the point in having a slushmatic???

Manuals are quicker, much more responsive and a hell of a lot more reliable. Fact Not to mention far more fun and involving...oh and more desirable..and worth more....

An Auto 300zx feels like a lazy Cruiser in comparison to a Manual 300zx.

I have owned an Auto 300zx and driven dozens and dozens of them, including 'Fastroad' box fitted.

I've also driven many before and after Manual conversions.....and its an incredible transformation!

Auto's are great for.......converting to manual

Marcus, bring her around one day. I'll let you know wether there is something(s) wrong.

and Adjust your dumpvalves so they only go off above a certain PSI.

Faults with early boxes are still extremely rare in comparison to Autobox faults.

I know that SWZ has scrapped over 20 autoboxes last year, but just 1 Manual box with a fault(and its still drivable, just noisy 4th gear syncro crunch)

I hate my manual box but then again it's got a horrible 6 puck racing clutch and it's hanging off the car as far as i can tell. 4th gear is notchy and second grinds a bit when it's cold.

Give me back my perfect auto box all is forgiven :(

i was comparing it against my fast road auto which is far superior to the manual, the std ones are a tad lazy, the fast road auto was awesome.

my last zed was an auto.. allbeit as good as stock, i too enjoyed driving it. it was still always a pleasure, but it lacked power in certain places when i wanted it... kick down at the right rpm/gear was the nuts, but at others, it was embarrassing and sluggish! i had all the settings and voltages checked for the kick down and gear changes etc but it appeared to be the norm :( i suppose with a car as powerful as yours, that down point gets somewhat 'drowned out' by the fact that kick down at any rpm is likely to snap your seat base mounts and see you upside down in the boot reading the japanese instructions for the targa bags!

Its amazing that some people actually think the Z manual box is good
