hey people,

got a question about octane booster......

i have been looking on "robo's" website and read the article on octane booster titled "toluene" and found, on the website, after testing 13 octane boosters, which range in price from $5 to $70, that toluene came 2nd out of 13.

it explains all the mixing ratios to get over 100 octane.

i have tried toluene mixed with my fuel and can say i did notice some difference in power.

has anyone tried toluene in their fuel?

if so, what do you think?

cheers people,

alan.

ive allways found theres enough octane in v-power unless your running very high power with matching boost, whats more important is the quantity of it via injector size...i tried all types of boosters when i had detting issues and none made a blind bit of diffrence not even increase in power in my eyes..hth ;)

I'm a member of a bike forum, mention tolouene there and get an angry response.

After this 'tip' 3 hayabusa turbos went into total meltdown.coincidence?

Seemed to work well with big yank blown v8's though.

Theres also the acetone (nail polish remover) debate...

i thought that by increasing the octane level it stops the burning/melting effect on the valves and pistons. please remember that i am no expert in this field.

The arguement isnt that raising the octane level makes any difference (because it does, BP 102 produced and extra 45bhp on a 911gt2 when properly mapped) but whether these products do acutally raise to octane level of the fuel you put in your motor.

i tend to believe the extra 45 would have been gained on the mapping Nick

so if octane level doesnt make any difference, why do people use v power over standard super????

So, other question, who in the forum uses racefuel, and where does anyone get it?

What are the costs, and did the users have to change the mapping of their ecu´s

How does it work? Sorry, totally new theme to me...

Thanks, an interested Patrick

That's the whole point.. if your car is mapped for 95RON then you'll gain zip by running 102RON race gas, let alone 98-99RON Ultimate/V-power - unless for some reason the ECU is retarding the ignition timing because you're getting detonation (e.g. too much static ignition advance).

But, going from 95 to 102RON might let you remap with an additional 4-5* dynamic timing, which could easily gain you 40bhp..

Of course some cars come from the factory with very advanced ignition maps, so the ECU is constantly retarding ignition based on knock on 95 or even 97RON fuel - so these cars see an increase in power when they run 99 or 102RON fuel. But I'm pretty sure the Z doesn't fall into that category (or there'd have been nothing to gain by advancing the static timing - which I remember being done in the past).

Incidentally, I've watched the knock levels in the MR2 on 95, 97, 98 and '99'RON fuel (standard unleaded, super unleaded, BP Ultimate and V-Power) - I saw very little difference between super, ultimate or V-power.. perhaps a 1 degree difference in timing advance, which is hardly worth the cost.

I did see a huge difference on 95 though - had to drop a good 2-3degrees out of the 'meaty' area of the map (where the turbo is starting to come on boost at WOT).

I can easily see getting perhaps another 3-5 degrees advance out of my map if I was running race fuel, or had the meth injection fitted - maybe even more. Meth injection is very cool - as long as you can stand filling the bottle up all the time (still cheaper than filling a NOS canister, mind!)

Of course I still have the weedy stock rods in the MR2, so if I pushed for another 4 degrees advance and had the boost at a healthy 8-10psi on the T517, I'd probably stuff a rod through the block :( They pretty much fold at 300bhp - then again, that is over twice stock power..

where can you get toulene from anyway, its dangerous stuff

the item that came out number one in the test was this stuff it raised the fuels ron rating bu a full 3 points I.E 95 ron to 98

http://www.powerenhancer.co.uk/section.php/5/1/octane-boosters

this test wasnt about extra power it was all about knock ( dett ) it was run at a independent site using a knock engine ( engine specially put together for testing of dett ), the point of the test was that if youre going to raise your boost then you need to do something to stop dett occuring ( its doesnt say that if you have dett allready it will stop it because you need to find the cause of the dett first and put that right) , the article makes no claim on power outputs just the increase of the fuels knock resistance with the additive in it, youre all thinking well whats the point of that and its just safety, the overiding factor is a tank of optimax costs £10 extra over standard unleaded and this additive costs £15 quid extra so optimax still wins out, will i use this additive....yes but only on track days where i want a bit of extra safety when im pushing the engine to its limits

hey deve8uk

i can get it for free!!!!

we use toluene in aviation to clean aircraft interiors, it is less harmful than de-greasing agents and does no damage to trim.

btw going to the ring this summer and will taking some with me!!!
