only does it when cold. started all of a sudden really. niose at the top of engine and it goes once warm

Mine makes exactly the same type of noise that I posted recently http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=103837&page=1&pp=15 I haven't got around to stripping the plenum off yet, but although it's a very noisey clacking (like a bad diesel) and not a ticking noise, I'm convinced it's a stuck lifter - here's why.

It's definitey coming from the top of the engine

It's at a cam, rather than crank frequency

There's loads of oil pressure

I've looked at how these lifters work and if they are stuck, the (tappet) gap could be huge and this would cause more than an annoying tick

It all started pretty quickly - one day it just went all clacketty-clacketty

The noise doesn't go away when the engine is warm - it's there all the time

I've tried lifter treatment (Wynns) and oil flush with no effect and also took the car for a hard thrash (if it's broken, it's broken) to try and free it off. Car still goes well with plenty of oil pressure and power. The noise has got slightly louder, but I figured the worst I could do was damage the cam.

So my plan is to strip the plenum off, pull the cam covers and cams and get the lifters out and replace them - hopefully. If they look fine I'll pull the engine and do a rebuild. I hope I'm right cos I don't want to have to get the engine out unless I really need to.

not forgeting the cam runs at half engine speed so its fairly easy to pick up the tap from the other sounds

Like i said gaz, im convinced of what i think it is, so if you need a hand, drop me an email off my profile, with your number, and we'll sort something out

i have taken the timing belt cover off the right hand side cam today and have seen that the belt seems quite loose. i only had the belt changed last year on a 60k service. do the tensioners fail . and would you expect any slackness in the belt at the top of the engine. when running you can see the belt deflect off the cams on the right hand side.(havent investigated any further as of yet as it means draining the coolent and taking off the front pipes.

have a vid but not very clear and now scared shitless of the belt slipping on the cams!!! been told not to run it until sure.

when the engine was stopped i could easily turn the centre idler by hand and lift belt off the n/s intake sprocket approx 10-15mm of teeth.

ran it up again and the belt tightened up there but was worried where it has settled up loose.

I think Danny@DTA does tensioners at a good price mate. If its cambelt related i wouldnt mess about and change the tensioner.

And DONT DRIVE IT! the last thing you want is for that belt to slip a couple of teeth

ok here you go. from today  http://img532.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mov00308qt3.flv

sounds sweet as a nut when taken for a drive! no noise

Hi Gaz, mine was making a similar noise - higher pitch "rattle" coming from the right cam cover area BUT coupled to a lower pitch one which I couldn't quite locate, both of which disappeared once warmed-up, hence Micra at the last meet  mechanic couldn't suggest anything other than an oil change as there was no noise for him to listen to :headvswal that does seem to have cured it though - for the moment! IIRC yours is a daily drive whereas my 'girl' sits on the drive (come rain or shine) for weeks in between runs, which doesn't help lifters etc. You could try having a chat with Scotty, he was having similar rattle problems at Ringwood meet.

Give me a shout if you (and/or Nick) need any extra help, obviously depending on 'baby birth' (which apparently could be any time from now till early Feb.........eeeeeek!!!!) etc

Cheers,

Steve

Usually yes, they will get quieter....unless the lifter(s) have dried up and seized then no it will be permantly there or a bit quieter when warm, and the best treatment is a oil change and can of lifter treatment....or failing that replacement lifter(s).

Do you have that noise and does it go away once warmed up ?

HEY LEGRATH

WHAT IS THE LIFTER TREATMENT CALLED AND BEST PLACE TO GET IT?

ALSO WHAT OIL WOULD YOU RECOMMENED?

CHEERS MATE

ALAN

The most common stuff is Wynns Lifter Treatment and is available at any good motorfactors.

for oil speak to Oilman, who works for OpieOils. He will give you some sound advice on oil. I personally used to use Castrol RS 10w60, but times may have moved on since then

Sounded like a blowing exhaust in the video?

the car is in my garage exhaust noise is it bouncing off of the back wall :p

coz we all really wanted a glance at your crotch?!?

at the begining of the vid, it sounds like lifters, but when you move to a bit more side on, i can hear what your saying about belt slap.

Does the noise change when the rev the engine? I find it odd that it goes, or at least quietens when the engine warms up.

Are the tensioners hydraulic? i cant remember

tensioners are hydrolic and its annoying as it was replaced last year!

noise more prominent when rev'd

i could have two problems at the same time tho so im going to replace the vvt springs as that has also been mentioned as a common fault for noise.

just dont fancy having to strip half the car just so i can see the timing belt.

well done nissan!! :xxx:

oh and sorry for the shot of my groin lol i didn't want to run the car for too long and forgot to turn off camera
