Icy road + heavy right foot = one less Z on the road...

IMG00043.jpg

Entering the M3 at junction 6 southbound, took it easy through the roundabout and left turn onto the slip road, got on the gas just as I straightened up and next thing I know I'm heading backwards into the verge. :headvswal

Cars on the way home so I can inspect the damage in detail. Just found out the wife changed the insurance coverage from full comp to liability only two months ago as she was trying to reduce the premium! I'll put up some better pictures soon, I need some honest opinions on if it's worth repairing. After all the time I've put into getting it just the way I wanted it, my heart tells me to fix it, but my head says breaking time...

MARCO WTF HAVE YOU DONE!!!!!

Marco...... WTF???!!!

Bloody hell Marco

Yes, I am a complete idiot.

Andy I, Duffman, Dave, Pete, Paul, and Gaz, thanks for the offers of parts, your all stars.

Looks like the first thing I need to do is confirm if the subframe is damaged. Is there a quick and dirty way to do this or do I need to pull the engine and get it on a jig? I'm pretty handy with the wrenches, but if the subframe needs replacing I'm guessing welding will be needed.

No Marco, the subframe just unbolts, drops all you front suspension aswell.

If you need any welding done give us a yell at work.

Doddle to remove the SF. Support the engine from above, undo the engine mounts, undo the tension rods, undo the top shock nuts, remove the top link bolts, undo the steering UJ then undo the 4 bolts holding the subframe on. Support it on a jack though or you'll end up with it on your head lol

Cheers,

Andy

Sorry mate, I'm glad your not hurt though bud. :o

sorry to see marco, but to be honest its not to bad

new wheel

exhaust

wing

mirror

engine mount (raise engine) fairly straight forward

tie rod (with it disconneted check for roughness on steering if there is no roughness present! its likely all you need is to replace tie rod.

Thanks Andy and Steve, that doesn't sound too bad.

Before I rent an engine hoist and tear it all apart how can I be sure that it is necessary? Or is it just a case of being safe and removing the subframe is the only way to really see whats damaged?

Sorry Greg, missed your post while I was writing mine. Hope it turns out to be a simple repair, but to be honest I dont think I'm that lucky. The good news is parts seem to be easy to find!

You could actually use another trolly jack to support the engine as long as you were carefull not to damage the sump - would save some money but its your call really :)

Jeeez, I know you said she needed a respray, but.......... :nelson: Seriously though, so sorry to see this, but thankfully you're OK, could so easily have been a different story - good job zeds are pretty solid.

Fingers crossed Gregs right and it's not too hard to get her put back together again, would be a crying shame to loose one of the nicest zeds around. Not sure that I can be of much help, although I make good tea/coffee, but willing to lend a hand if needs be.

Take it easy mate,

Cheers,

Steve

Ditto marco. Im fairly handy with a spanner, and im only down the road. Let me know if you need a hand with anything

Nick

glad your ok marco... such a gut wrenching feeling when something like that happens but as said previously, its all materialistic so keep your chin up and battle it through :)

btw... you might have started a new trend... side exit exhausts!..

IMG_2790.jpg

honestly though mate... thats some ploy just to get a respray

take out the coil packs and use a piece of 4,4 wood across the top of the engine and use a strap or rope through the plenum and around the wood on top.

you will probably find the engine mount has snapped and just jammed on a funny angle. try jacking it up and try putting the mount back in its place !

Today's update -

Stripped the right side suspension, new KYB is shot, all the suspension arms are bent in one way or the other. Good news is the subframe looks fine and there are no signs of cracks or bends in the engine bay or anywhere else on the body. Your right about the motor mount Paul, it has definitly seperated and is sitting at a funny angle, but all the hard bits look OK. Time to start shopping!

Gutted for you.

At least no one was hurt. The insurance isn't a problem because they would have just written it off.

Got my old tie rod arms kicking around somewhere if you need them.

Darrell

hope ya get it sorted mate, its so nice to see people that actually care, this has to be the best forum i've ever been on, oh and i'm glad your ok marco.

if you get the car to mine il get it back on the road for you FOC just parts and beer required IIRC i have a black wing here in ok condition. Like i said the offers there if needed.

Thanks for the offer Greg! I already have the car up on jack stands and most of the bad bits removed so no need to move it now. I'm feeling pretty comfortable with completing the repairs on my own but if I get stuck I will call on yourself and the other generous club members who have offered help. Definitly interested in the wing, I will put up a new post in the wanted section for the OEM parts I need to replace.

Thanks again to everyone for your kind words and positive thoughts!

Boll0x mate, only just seen this... Really sad for you this has happened, did the same thing myself 4 years ago coming off a roundabout but luckely just bent the suspension and no body work damage... Hope you get it all sorted... Regards, Jonny
