time to take out the engine!!

thanks for all your help in my previous post, looks like i have a O/S turbo gone, so i recon it time to whip the engne out. can anyone suggest which hoses, gaskets, etc i should replace as a matter of course having taken the engine out and where to get them from (preferably without gettin ripped off) think i should also change cambelt seeing as its unknown when it was last done, what would i need for this, also looking out now for a O/S turbo if anyone has andy secondhand but good ones.

you can buy all of your spares from mjp in the traders section of the forum. i would recommend changing the cambelt as good practice as the price of a new belt compared to the price of an engine rebuild... need i say more!

 

as for the turbo... its time to part with 20squid and subscribe... then post up in the 'items wanted' section... im sure somebody will be of service to you :)

You don't need to buy a new turbo, you just need to take this one to someone who will recondition it with new seals, or they will do an exchange. Buying a second hand one is risky unless its already been reconned (sp?), or is new/low milage. You'll deffo want to subscribe if you are pulling the engine, worth its weight in gold for the extra advice you'll get.

Yep, as Si says it would be stupid just to do one turbo as the other is just as worn and taking the engine out isn't something you want to do twice.

 

Do a search on plenum water bypass as it costs bugger all to do and could save you a lot of work in future.

Engine mounts are nearly always knackered so might need replacing.

Worth checking the clutch if it's a manual?

and while the gearbox is being converted to manual you might want to consider....

 

New leather interior, wheels, discs, brakes, body kit, underdrive pulley, short shifter, paintjob, alloys, suspension, exhaust, decats and most important of all....extra blingy bits.... :D

 

 

 

oh, last and not least......

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

a nice big, fat, juicy remortgage to cover the expenses :x: :wack:

now that is possibly a project for the future, at the mo i am just trying to get her on the road with a budget of 0 pounds, lol, can i make oil seals out of old newspaper!!!! maybe not.

Oil seals are not expensive, and a worth while job while you have the engine out, with these cars you will learn prevention is better than cure its the cheapest way forward in the long run. If you cant afford seals with a budget of 0£'s how you gonna get 2 new turbo's?

andy, you could try the paper, but dont fancy your chances. :D. not like the good old days where you made gaskets from corn flake boxes.

lol i know its tragic isent it, do you all mean turbos are expensive!!!!! bugger new i should have gone for a n/a, joking aside this is a long term project that will have to be done bit by bit as finances allow, at the mo i would just like to get it to the point where it drives, then mrs can drive it a bit while i fix her saab! another tail of woe!!

£0??? You're already going to be opening your wallet and relieving yourself of at least £400 - £500 for a set of OEM recon turbos on exchange.

 

Would never do a DIY job on the reconditioning of those. Very precise equipment needed for measuring end float etc.

well if you do nothing else while the engine is out, do a plenum bypass for just a few quid for silicon hosing it will save you a hell of a lot of grief in the future if any of the rear water hoses go

The part that wears and increases endfloat is included in the rebuild kits.

When you install it, it restores turbine shaft endfloat to factory levels.

 

There's nothing difficult about reconning turbos. All the hard work involved is taking engine/gearbox out.

Written by a member on here MTL. Many thanks to him that I reconned mine in about 90 mins each having never attempted this before.

 

Not sure if he has updated the PDF but just rebember the turbine nut is a LEFT HAND thread.
