Long story..... ;)

I was driving home along the High Street here in town this evening, and I saw a cop car across the entrance to a one way road. Now he was pointing out of this one way road, in the wrong direction, which was a bit naughty to start with, and I'm sure he would of booked anyone else doing it ;) Anyway, I thought I'd do the polite thing and let him out, so i flashed to him, but instead of pulling out, he motioned, with his hand, for me to continue past him anyway (ungrateful git!!) so I did, and as soon as i passed him he pulled out behind me, followed me past a car parked on the path ( a Ferrari 360) and then put his blue lights on!! He wanted me to pull over!

Now I knew instantly what he was going to say, but I wasn't sure how he was going to do it, either by the book or just 'Inform' me!!.........

Right I'll make this into a two parter..... So can you guess what he pulled me for?.... I'll post it up in a bit :D

Number plate size?.....

Spot-on!! :duffer:

He said "I'm just advising you, but you need to change your front number plate"

I thought you miserable git! So I won't be bothering to let them out anymore!

But............

I did bluff my way out of any responsibility anyway, by saying that it's the standard size for a Jap import, to which he tried to say that it should still be a UK size plate. So i said that it's had a lot of disscussion on the owners club site (here) and that as it's a JSpec model it's legal to run around with a smaller plate on!!!

And he accepted that!! not that he was booking me anyway, but now when he see's me again he won't bother to stop me again, unless he finds out the truth in the meantime ;) (lets hope he doesn't!)

Cops 0 Dave 1    :hyper: :nana2:

pmsl, i was going to get a legal import set of plates made up next week, so does that mean i should carry the legislation with me in the glovebox to show the pigs up? ;)

No, because, like I said, I 'BLUFFED' him!

The law states that if you can phisically fit on a standard UK plate, then you should do so. So you see, you can fit a UK plate on all of the OEM JSpec front bumpers, it's just the rear one where you can't fit a proper size one on. Even though i have by fitting a UK rear bumper ;)

At least he didn't say anything about my glowing rear centre panel :D although I'd of kept to the same stance about that as well, it's a factory option!

Well I've not done too bad, it's been illegal for two and a half years now, and this is the first time, and I've got away with it

It's not like I'm always breaking the law  :nono: :x: ;)

So you didn't feel the need to point out the fact that he was coming the wrong way out of a one way street.

Surely that is a more hanous crime than the wrong size number plate gig.

If he'd tried booking me then I would of brought it up, along with the fact that there was the Ferrari parked on the path, it was the High street and shoppers were trying to get past (Not particularly wide at that point)

I think I was a bit more stunned that after trying to help him get out of the side road, he then pulled me! :slap:

PMSL Dave! Nice one. I've yet to be advised of my front plate and that's been on there close 2 two years too. Police have looked at the car as I've been at lights or waiting to pull in/out of a road and they never bat an eye-lid. :)

Ahh

Simple.

Its passed numorous MOT's and being a JSpec its past the import requirements neither of them have required you to change it.

i got pulled last year for having a small front plate. they reckoned that the letters were too small, yet the rear plate which they said was ok had the same size lettering

anyway they gave me a disclaimer and i had to get it sorted, just put a slightly longer plate on and got the disclaimer signed by a garage, not been pulled again yet.

the thing that gets me is, the lettering on our "too small" plates is perfectly readable, i see hundreds of normal sized plates a day on boy racer cars but they look like there written in arabic!!! somethin wrong there!!

actualy Dave, you are not far from the truth on this one. - had this row with a vosa inspector that his heart on taking my car off the road.

the law states

1.) the number plate must be readable from x set distance

Only number plates after 2001 fitted need to comply to

2.) 'Characters must be 79mm high and 50mm wide with a stroke of 14mm.Inter-character gap is 11mm and the space between the two parts of the registration number is 33mm'

So in conclusion, if your plates are readable from the set distance, and were fitted before 2001 they are completely legal. any plate fitted to any age car after 2001 must comply the new rules. one to remember peeps! :)

I've had numerous e-mail discussions with DVLA, VOSA etc as mine's an import and I was considering a smaller front plate. It appears that it "could" be legal. as my car wasn't constructed to accomodate a full UK plate, however, they were careful to point out that they can only advise on points of law - only a judge can give a definitive answer!!!!

This took over 6 months of e-mails and being shunted from one organisation to another and back again - how can it be so damned difficult to get a straight yes/no answer  - no wonder the response is so different across the country when DVLA and Co. just leave it to the mood swings of each individual plod!!!!

Just frustrates me that you try to do the 'right thing' and end up getting the run-around.....rant over....for now

But surely if the plate was fitted before 2001 it had to comply with the PRE 2001 regulations?

i.e. The characters were bigger

This is defo where my plate falls foul of the law, it is physically smaller, and the lettering is also smaller, although it is the correct font used.
