A mate of mine owns Clarksons old SL55 AMG and reckons it would piss all over my Z. I've got a SWB with basic mods - filter, decat, chip, 1 bar boost, and it feels pretty quick. What are my chances of shutting him up? :)

 

I reckon they'll be about neck and neck, the SWB flies to 100 and we wont be going over that anyway, cos someone said it was illegal?? Anyone have experience of the Merc? Paul C, hope you read this, how does your Z compare to the AMG?

BTW, I raced an E55 AMG (estate car!) up the DC into Bridgwater a few weeks ago, but I was in my RX-7 and it was neck and neck! According to figures I've read, the E55 is slightly quicker than the SL55, amazing for a bloody estate car! The RX is about the same to 100 as my Z, but slightly quicker after that.

chances are he has at least the 5.5l v8 under the hood with traction control. if you're unlucky he'll have the supercharged 5.5l v8. have a go and let us know how you get on :D the SL will be quicker than the E because of weight.

Stock TT does 0-100 in about 14 secs.....1 bar boost and your looking at less than 12 (I recoded a 11.8secs in my old TT Manual)....but not 10secs

Yes it's the AMG, so 5.5 twin supercharged. Figures I've seen are 0-60 4.7. It's got traction control, but he reckons it spins anyway so he turns it off and pulls away in second gear? I don't have traction control on the Z, so it's half throttle to pull away or it spins sideways, then floor it when it changes up to second. Even like that it feels quicker than the RX 0-60 and that's saying something!

tell him to try his luck at the pod mate... im sure there wont be a massive gap in the time differences, then go and ask him what the gap is in price difference and buy him a beer!

Is that merc stats or independant? Seems very quick that, I think the car weighs over two tons!

Yep! The E estate is the one I raced into bridgwater and was neck and neck.

I don't think you'd stand a chance unless he drives like a monkey! I had an amusing one on the candyrun the other week which was an eye opener. I had a couple of really good drag starts where I nailed a bunch of new Corvettes. After a few poor starts we then tried again and I bogged down and missed my gear changes. He pulled away one handed whilst talking to a mate on his mobile and utterly raped me! He had a little lcd screen on the back window (chavness!) which he put 'bye bye' on! Made me realise that its all very well having half a thousand bhp but if its hard to drive smoothly and he's in a new car with traction control (think he had launch control as well) then unless you have it perfect you don't stand a chance. He didn't even try. Then again I didn't have any Corvettes on my tail at silverstone....

I think an SL55AMG will wipe the floor with a Zed unless it's a very highly tuned one.

thats the old E55 AMG. normally aspirated & nowhere near as quick as the new supercharged versions!

I tried my G-Tech in the Z tonight on a 1/4 mile test (don't know how accurate they are but my RX when it was stock recorded 14.3sec @ 100mph with this unit) and the Z recorded a 14.1 sec @ 105 mph on 0.7 bar boost. On 1 bar boost I recorded 12.9 sec @ 120 mph. I think that's pretty accurate as this Z really does pin you in the seat! The SL55 AMG figure on the net is 13 sec @ 110mph.

 

Bearing in mind that it's an auto, and 0-20 is slower than a bog Escort (auto's don't take off till they reach 20 and that takes about 2.5 sec) I reckon the AMG would be beat! I'm sure of it :)

 

My last Z wouldn't have stood a hope in hell but this thing is something else! The ECU is some Jap racing club thing, and the timing is fully advanced, if it wasn't for the auto box lag from 0-20 I reckon it would be hitting 11 sec 1/4 mile. So how come your Z's seem to be less quick?

Raced an SL55 AMG in my silver zed. My car was Decatted, light underdrive pully, JWT chip, boost up to 16psi, Apexi induction.

 

It p1ssed all over me like i was driving a slow old family car.

 

Wasn't from a standing start, was about 30mhp we started and he was over two car lengths in front before we hit 90. Was the only thing I ever came accross that beat the silver zed and by heck did it beat it hand down!
