Ive seen in the news that SUV's are going to get hammered for car tax. Up to £420. After the new budget. Is this based on emissions and if so how would a 300zx TT get hit.

My car is of the road without an MOT and is still referenced as having '0' emissions from the importer. So i paid £175 for a 3.0L car last time.

I paid £175 too . They`ve got the car down as 3000cc on the V11 ( the reminder ) , although technically it`s just under that o` course , should 3000cc become a step up the scale . I taxed mine online yesterday when I realised the budget was imminent . I got caught out last time : it went up between the V11 arriving and me going to the poxy Post Office :headvswal :headvswal :headvswal

I heard this was just for new cars so won't affect us.

I believe this is so as well.

The last shake-up was for cars registered after March 2001. That is why the 300zx is still £175 but my 2002 Rav-4 2.0 NRG costs £190 to tax.

After that date it is all down to emissions - the official figure for my Rav is 211g of CO2; enough to take it to the second highest level. Next is 225g IIRC which will cost £210 p/a at present.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

From the man himself :-

Vehicle Excise Duty

A.91 Graduated Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates for band G cars will increase to £300 in

2007-08, £400 in 2008-09 and frozen in 2009-10. Band B reduces to £35 this year, with this rate

then frozen for the next 2 years. Band F increases by £10 in 2007-08 and £5 in each of the next

two years. Rates for Bands C-E, pre-2001 cars and vans, and post-2001 vans will rise by £5 in

each of the next three years. VED rates for petrol and diesel cars are aligned. In 2007-08 only,

the rates for motorbikes in the lower band will be frozen, with higher bands increased by £1-

£2; and rates for heavy goods vehicles (HGV), special types vehicles, combined transport

vehicles and all vehicle categories that are linked to the basic goods rate will be frozen.

Changes to VED rates for 2007-08 take effect from 22 March 2007.

So what band is a 3.0 litre petrol sports car dating back to early 1990's ?

The rise in VED for Band G cars - which include not only 4x4s but also some large people carriers and estate cars - was accompanied by a £10 rise for Band F vehicles, the next most polluting cars.

But while the least polluting Band A cars will continue to pay no VED, the next cleanest in Band B will see their rate cut by £15 to £35.

So what he's really doing is using the totally non-stealth green tax to push cars of the road and avoid extra investment in roads. This means less spending and more tax income - a double whammy for government coffers.

tax for zeds is unchanged @ £175 pa.....happy days :)

Yep, make sure you don't have any cars registered after 1/3/2001 - presume that's 01-March-2001.

Well anyone want to buy anice low milage Ford Ranger Thunder Crew cab all singing and dancing cheep.

I think your Ok, its New cars First registered after march 2001, your import will have a date of first reg in Japan, thats the date that sets it's tax band

Mine is due to be registered this week.... I you're right, I don't fancy a £300 plus bill just to drive it on weekends and in dry weather.... Tax and insurance could end up costing me £750 a year, for about which will work out at about £7.50 a mile based on our summers ;)

Hi,

The higher car tax wont make any difference to owners of new 4X4's and large saloons, as they're mostly funded by Company car allowances.

The Companies will just give their executives more allowance to keep them sweet!

Cheerz,

Jez

Sorry to sound confused, but my old import didnt have a date of first registration in Jap Land, but it had a date of manufacture. Surely they mean that its going to be based on the year of manufacture not year of registration!?!

If it is the case of "year of registration" then i prob wont buy a zed again, there is no way that i can afford to pay the same in tax as i would insurance. :(

Is anyone able to clear this point up at all?

Nick,

The date of manufacture" and "date of first registration" mean the same thing in our case. Its why when buy an import the registration mark is, K or L for a '93 import, not 03 or 53, if imported into the UK in 2003.

I hope this make sense.

I think import V5's say "date of first registration in the UK" as well as "date of manufacture".

yeah thats what i remmber it saying. Im just very aware about how anal the government can be when it comes to wording of their new policies.

As long as it runs by the year of the car like you said, then im happy

cheers bud
