bugger!... driving to work this morning the zeds stereo turned itself off and the aerial went down. the hicas and abs lights both came on accompanied by a faint battery light... the steering went very heavy... at which point i battled to turn it around and went back home, WOHOO, another day off!

the speedo and the odometer were still working fine as was the tacho.

im confused at the combination of problems here... any ideas??

Joel.

The faint battery light is usualy a sign that your alternators rectifier is packing up .. i dont see how this would cause any of the other problems you have.. i would check and clean all your engine bay earth points for starters.. the chassis earth on the zed isnt the best ive seen

Could your power steering pipe blown? I believe that this is near to the alternator...so maybe it pissed fluid onto it..causing it to die.

PAS fluid wouldn't cause an alternator to die would it? It's a lube and would probably do it a bit of good... LOL

Have you got a multi meter? If not you can get one for under £10.

Voltage across the battery with the engine running should be about 14.5 volts. Over 15 the reg/rec's letting too much through. Under 14 it's not letting enough through.

IIRC anyway!

If the alternator is not charging the battery goes flat and causes those faults. When it happened to me my doors lock and unlocked and the gauges kept giving strange readings until it cut out and would not start again. New alternator all sorted.

Yep,same for me a few months back  allso had same probs more or less when another time another Z the battery decided to die, plenty volts,no amps

Give me a pm if you need the alternator looking at. I had a problem with overcharging. I found a bloke in Southbourne who fixed it. Cost loads less than another new one. I look out his phone number

...you'll enjoy changing the altenator!

Good luck

Jack

Yep hope you got small hands and eyes that can see round corners

Check the fuse marked up as "battery cont" this is in the black fuse and relay box on the passenger side inner wing.

Am I talking crap? I swear on my life that I heard this was a common problem.

Your belt shouldn't slip from getting wet, I'd tighten it up ASAP as if they start slipping like mine did they can shred and leave you stranded in Germany
