I Think both have there advantages it just depends on the sort of money you are looking to pay? Manuals you have a little more control in my opinion but auto's are much better for town driving, I have had manual and auto cars and i like both. So i would say look at it from a finance point of view if you can afford one then manuals can be alot of fun but practicality sometimes auto's are best.

manual deffinatly how much you hopeing to spend first? And what sort of quality car you after are you looking for something to do up or one that is 100% perfect, there is a lot of good reasanoble priced cars on here have you looked in the cars for sale forum?

IIRC auto's have smaller turbo's, but if you can pick an auto up cheap enough then a manual conversion is always an option. I had an auto TT before and just picked up another auto, wanted a manual but pricce was too good, so if its cheap enough drive an auto till you have the cash then get a conversion done. i agree with the statements above manuals are more fun but autos sometimes are more practical.

depends on you really, at the end of the day your the one driving it

Auto boxes can cause problems if not well cared for - but if you're thinking of converting it to manual wouldn't really matter.

In terms of performance there's very little to choose between them. One is 0.1 secs quicker to 100mph, the other 0.1 faster over a standing 1/4 mile.

I have an auto and really like it.

Hi i have now had my first auto 300zx and in my opinion you would be aswell buying a mondeo,an auto is for a relaxing cruiser not a supercar ;)

manual box going in mine as soon as i find one lol

Paul

I had an auto (tip-tronic) Galant VR4. Even though the autobox was incredible, I ended up selling the car bacause it was just so dull to drive.

I have driven Paul's car, and have to agree with him. You may as well be driving a Mondeo. There's no feeling of envolvement. Yes, you have power, but I like to choose when to use a gear, not some damn machine ;)

Ditto

Had the same with my FTO

i can Certainly feel the power in my Auto!! well i did till the Engine gave up on me!:(

I would not say they were like a Mondeo to drive?? or A Vectra and i have one of those:) Bloody quick Car even as an Auto!! i'd be happy with both haven Driven Both. as for control you can still manually shift an Auto:)

Horses for courses. I like driving Autos, but just don't like the lack of driver involvement. Besides a car sounds so much nicer when it's changing gear manually than the way the engine revs with an auto. I didn’t even consider an auto when I went looking for mine.

What you could do, is buy a very tidy auto, since there's more choice, pay a little less for it than you would do a manual and then get ZenGarage to do a conversion for you.

Autos can go for a substantial amount less than their manual TT counterparts. You could even find a good one with a shagged autobox for next to nothing. Autoboxes pack up on even the tidiest and well looked after cars. So you'd not be doing yourself a disservice in buying a very tidy one with decent engine and autobox problems if you were going to do a manual conversion.

Shouldn't be changing gear while going round a roundabout anyway ;)

hi my cars at ztech at the moment having the conversion,in my opinion the auto is ok but it drove me mad the way the revs rose and fell all the time, and the way it kicked down as soon as you touched the throttle, sounds good, but very annoying and i would have thought not very economical, mines having a new lightened flywheel at the same time and hicas removed so hopefully should feel a bit differant when it comes back.

Auto's are ideal for Manual conversions ;)

but seriously....most Z32's are Auto. If its Jap spec then fit an aftermarket oil cooler and it will increase its reliablity. Many are happy with the Auto gearbox, test drive both and see what you think.

Nissan put a lot of effort in making the auto perform well, and You dont sacrifice much in performance.

I think you're asking two questions:-

1) Which is best, auto or manual?..........that has to be your personal choice as to whether you like to drive a car or whether you like a car to drive you. You have plenty of opinions on this expressed in previous posts. My personal preference is DEFINITELY the former.....I hate automatics.

2) Which is best, auto or manual 300ZX?.......from the short time I have been priviledged to read the items on this forum, I have repeatedly read how auto owners experience problems all of which seem to have very expensive remedies (one poor guy had THREE gearboxes in three years and is now selling his car in disgust). The problems with manuals seem to be much fewer and, when they do occur, seem to be much cheaper to fix.

Even taking into account there are far fewer manuals around than autos, my opinion is that manuals are cheaper to maintain, more reliable and more fun to drive. The choice is yours!

Whichever you decide on, you will have made a decision you will not regret, you will be a 300ZX owner.....JOIN THE CLUB :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

This is THE most sensible answer on this thread IMO.

I have driven both versions of the twin turbo and can honestly say there is very little between them. The 300zx TT is a great car what ever version you buy.

I have no preference between the 2 myself and simply chose the best ZX available at the time I was looking - which just happened to be an auto. I would initially have preferred a manual (prior to driving them), for driver involvement etc etc but I am not disappointed with my choice.

I do have a low mileage UK spec though hence no problems with the 'box. Whereas imports are prone to failure as the poor oil cooling leads to oberheating on the UK's roads.

Best thing is to drive both versions and make your choice.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

thanks for all replies, all pointers have been noted. i am looking to buy a 300 tt and have around 3500. let me know wat you have

I drive auto TT , I am strugglling when breaking - I ve used manual cars and had a 330ci sport with steptronic greabox. so in my opinion manuals are better on breaking

For driving day to day auto is the way forward i think. although everyone thinks differently. best thing is to test drive
