What is a PTU and the benefit of having a series two one?

Power Transistor Unit - it makes the ignition work ;)

The series one unit is a know weakness and goes bad around 60k miles. It's a case of when, not if mate!

The series 2 is more reliable so most people buy the later version with the new harness. They cost around £250+vat from Nissan in the UK, but you can get them for half that including shiping from the USA. Also IIRC Vijay can get them cheaply - otherwise MJP, Z-tech etc....the usual ever-reliable traders.

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Thanx guys :D

i'm just over 60,000 miles what happens when it goes?

Your car doesn't!!! :D

No, seriously, it can happen in a number of ways, some is just miss-firing, you can loose the odd cylinder, or the whole lot can pack up altogether. It just depends which part of the PTU goes first.

Oh right! maybe.......mmm

I'm having problems with my car, prehaps mine has gone, i'm still able to drive it well if i really needed too think i better get that looked at aswell.

Sod it i'll just replace it anyway.

Could it cause smoke to come out the exhausts???

IT DOES GO*

*if you compare it to a fiesta hehe  .

hi all I think i am having the problem that you are all talking about:

I recently had some work done on my car by paul from southwestz to fix a water leak. I was initially unaware of this leak and as a consiquence of this my car had overheated on a couple of occasions. Since I had it back a couple of weeks ago I have noticed that things haven't been quite the same with the car. First of all the exhausts started popping a little and then the engine started hunting excessively on idle intermittently. I also noticed an intermittent hesitation in accelloration.

Yesterday I drove it to the pub and it was running ok but when I drove it home it really started to play up and i kept losing power momentarily. When I came to start the car this morning the engine just turns over and nothing seems to be happening!!!

I know that the fuel pump is working as the tank is pressurised and I have a slight fuel leak in the engine bay so I can smell the fuel. The only thing I have done differently to normal yesterday was that the super unleaded pump was out of order so I had to put in normal unleaded petrol but I doubt thins has anything to do with it.

It seems to me that what I have read suggests that the series 1 PTU is good for about 60k miles (mines done 70k) and that they are particularly bad at coping with excessive heat. I've checked the connections to the PTU itself and they seem to be ok. I've also checked for anything that looks loose or has come off in the engine bay and I can't see anything obvious. I'm frustrated because i've only had the car back a couple of weeks! Is there anyone who can help me out or provide any further advice as I would like to have my car back before I return to work next year as it's my every day car!

oh yeah - I tried it not long ago and it is still just the same. I've checked everything else on the car and it all seems to be working and also I am just wondering if the hesitance in acceloration and the exhaust popping is something to do with a cylinder failing due to the PTU slowly giving up?

could be your head gasket if car has overheated before as that may have damaged it

how would i distinguish between the two faults? I'm worried now - PTU is one thing changing the head gaskets is completely another! I dont wanna spend another grand on my car! HELP!!!

... When I came to start the car this morning the engine just turns over and nothing seems to be happening!!!...

Well if it was your head gasket, then you'd still get a spark from the plugs. I think you could be on the right track with your description and synopsis.

There are two ways of testing this, one is to find a friendly Zed owner who, either, has a spare PTU, or is prepared to lend you theres!

Or the other way is to go out and buy one, but this could be wasted money if it is somthing completeley different.

Best bet is to try to find a friendly LOCAL Zed owner who is prepared to help you out. Post a thread in General, as it should get the most attention there.

HTH

wolfman, if you can get in touch with pj, i still have an old ptu at his, get it posted to you and try it, if it works, you know you need one mate
