Do I take it a boost controller will eliminate the need for boost jets? With a chip and boost controller i'm hoping i can run it on 95 oct at stock level, and if I want some fun, fill the tank ,add octane boost and set it to a higher boost, so i will be keeping my engine safe.

Sorry for stupid question, but I've done searches and read a lot about boost controllers, and because I cant get optimax or anything over 95 oct here it makes it a bit more complicated.

Sorry, forgot to ask does a boost controller just plug into the ECU or does it need a specialist to fit .

yes, remove your jets when the controller is installed otherwise it wont work properly. there are various opinions on using octane booster - probably best to do a search and see what comments have been made. as for installing the controller, no it doesnt connect to the ecu, most of the work is under the bonnet. its not too tricky to install - needless to say i left it for an expert

i would say run on super unleaded all the time, the few pence per litre saving just isnt worth it on a car like this IMO.

That's the whole point , Ireland no longer supplies super unleaded so I don't have a choice :headvswal ..................I'm not THAT mean

No probs, i've done a search but it's all double dutch to me. As skyline Dave said I'll leave it to an expert.

I think Im correct in saying that electronic boost controllers are not usually connected to your ECU.

They measure your boost and control the level via the Plenum / Wastegate / Turbo loop...no ECU involved. Im saying that they are not usually connected not that they are never connected.

The big advantage is that because they are fast and can switch in and out fast and can bleed air off by rapid pulsing of the solenoid(s) that you can get to a higher boost and hold it better with a leccy boost controller ( as long as it is properly set up )

You need to make sure that the rate of gain or slope is not set too high in order to hold onto high boost.

So much has been written about them..just put electronic boost controller into Google and see, but when all said they are a good item if used carefully.

Cheers John ,

that at least gives me an insight into what it actually does. I'm afraid i'm a complete idiot when it comes to engines. but I'm learning ;)

Apexi controllers are connected to the ECU

Field controllers are connected to the ECU

some HKS controllers are connected to the ECU

Greddy controllers not (but some older models are)

Blitz controllers not

iff i couldnt get my mitts on decent fuel then upping the boost would be the last thing on my mind mate :(

SpeedyZ post this instruction on how to install electronic boost controller. I have used it to set up my Power-Enterprise Boost controller and no problems. I did it in just over 3 hours. If you don't have the right tools it may take you longer

Good luck

Thats been my thinking for a long time, but the zed engine has so much potential i don't want to miss out!

that's why a boost controller will suit me as i can put in john dixons chip, keep it at stock boost for everyday driving and add octane at the weekend and up the boost ? Or am I wrong?

sounds like a good plan to me!! if you do a search someone on hear mentioned adding something you can get from B&Q etc to your fuel to increase octane levels... maybe but up a new thread?

Cheers bud, when I originally found out about the fuel situation a few months ago i posted a thread and got some great advice on octane boosters. Main worry is getting the boost controller and chip fitted correctly first, Then it's funtime!

Ahem, the mainland? mainland of what?

light hearted comment mate, dont go all political :( ive got a few mates who live in carlow town and they call "england" the mainland no big deal
