My car has a japenese performance ecu from Central 20 Racing

Now i guess this is set for 100 ron fuel.

So do I,

Leave it in and continue to use optimax all the time it will be ok

As above but also use octane booster

Get the Central 20 chip remapped

Sell the ecu buy a stock one and get that remapped.

Cheers

A few people have been running a Central20 map, some love it, some are not so sure.

Incidentally, I don't know how may variations of their maps there are ...

Done a bit of research on racing fuels. Not sure if this will help anyone.

Anyway, note that from this example, the desired octane in the 300ZX is 100RON (or as close as you can get). Well, 3 parts 106RON fuel to every 7 parts 97RON fuel gives us 100RON dead on.

So, we have a 70L tank, I make that 49L of 97 fuel and 21L of racing fuel. Now, this is where it starts to get a little expensive......

49L of fuel at 90p per litre (rounded off) = 49 x 90p = £44.10.

21L of racing fuel at £3.20 per litre (rounded off) = £67.20

Which means it's going to cost you £111.30 to fill up the ZX.

Now if you use Optimax at 98RON instead of 97RON things change dramatically.....

1) Using Optimax, With a revised ratio of 3 parts 106 RON fuel to every 10 parts 98RON (remember to add +1 to the RON ratings on the conversion chart) and @ 93p per litre gives us :

63L of fuel at 93p per litre (rounded off) = 63 x 93p = £58.59

7L of racing fuel at £3.20 per litre (rounded off) = £22.40

Which means it's going to cost you £80.99 to fill up your ZX.

You don't have to buy racing fuel, if you can get hold of toluene !

Well it won't be in Halfords, thats for certain. You may have to be a bit creative ....

Shame I don't still work at the MOD research facility in Malvern....I'm sure there'd have been a way... lol

I run a Mines ECU in my Jap TT import which is mapped for 100 ron fuel. Just run it on Optimax, had no prob's whatsoever and the Mines is supposed to be pretty aggresive. Had a Jap N/A before this one with a Central20 chip in, again Optimax and no prob's.

Mind you stick anything else in and it runs like a bag of crap. Ex missus once stuck a tenner's worth of supermarket unleaded in it (as she didn't see the point in spending the extra) - detonation anywhere above 3000rpm, and that's why she's the EX!!!!!

HTH

AvGas is 110 octane I think ? That would be ok as a mix.

Bear in mind that although jap fuel is 100 octane the quality is not as good as ours.

Also feel sorry for the US people, some of them have REALLY low octane ...

Thanks Celt1

Andy, I guess that's why (especially on older cars) many yankmobiles are seriously detuned?

dont think ive had too much problem with min but ive never run it on a uk spec chip so dont know what difference it will make.

Hmmmm, conflicting reports at the mo...on my thread it was advised I get a replacement chip, whilst on this one, it seems it may not be a necessity.

I'll get one anyway though to save any future ball ache.

  • Author

see what you mean si as ive never thought i had a proble till your thread and the central 20 is a very agressive chip.

  • Author

wasnt there a post a while back about adding some kind of thinners to your fuel or was that a wind up

Pity neither of us know what parameters the chips are mapped to. Might be able to work out how 'safe' it is that way.

the central 20 is a very agressive chip.

Does anyone really know what it does and how it achieves its result(whatever that result might be)

I "discovered" one on my NA and didnt know what it was till I saw a reference to Central 20 on the forum somewhere.(thick or wot? I know! LOL)

Ie is it a bolt on goody on its own, what type of mods help it to work best.

Im guessing there are different versions for TTs n NAs??

Anyone?

When it comes down to it, would you rather have a chip of unknown specification thats probabably mapped for Higher octane fuels, and who knows that the Timing map is like on it or a well known Chip thats proven for its performance and safety.

And when there so cheap, why take any risk.

Well i dont know what the difference is but somebody looked at the mapping on a consult and said it was very agressive, possibly told them to **** off or something lol

doent the more agressive ones give better performance if you have the right fuel and set up etc... otherwise they would be pointless lol

From what i understand the mines and central 20 chips etc are pretty sought after.

ask Steve (blackMagic) is running that chip on Tesco's 99ron

OK.....

I do indeed run the 99ron fuel....

I do indeed run the central 20 chip...

I used to run the JWT chip and have had a superchip :xxx: (got rid of that asap)

Several thousand miles later on both and I can honestly say that on the 99ron fuel and the Central 20 chip that it is alot better than the JWT for my settings and my car.

The power has been shifted from the top end compared to the JWT to a much more aggresive low to mid range power but still with oodles of go at the top end with the central 20.

There is a definate overal gain throughout the rev range that i was very pleased with.

I have never had any det in any circumstances on the Central 20 chip but did experience it with the JWT on 97ron with the timing set at 17'o BTDC...so it was set to 15'o BTDC and that sorted that one(Thanks andy)

I have not run the Central 20 chip on 97 or 98 ron as why have cotton when you can have silk...lol

And im still running 15'o BTDC.

I have all the data/settings recorded from the ConZult test for these two chips saved and can post if required if im allowed to do so...not sure if it will step on anyones toes so to speak so if its not wise to do so then please let me know as otherwise if enough people want to see the info then I will post it up.

So its a thumbs up to the Central 20 for me

I have looked at these mappings bud and to me the JWT is way more aggressive at the top end but the Central 20 is more spread out...

but like you say...

The Central 20 is probably set for a decent fuel which is why it need'nt look so aggressive at the top but still achieves the better performance.

most central20 chips I have seen are actually very well designed chips, but a little bit too aggressive for European Fuels.

Central20 chips go up to 27 BTDC at full boost (midrange RPM's), but are also very rich (AF-ratio of 10.5:1), where eg. JWT doesn't exceed 20BTDC at full boost with an AF-ratio of 12.5:1

You can still use the Central20 though by retarding the timing 3 or 4 degrees and don't exceed 12-13psi boost
