yep i know i have been on bout this before but its doing my head in!!

first fault!

coasting down hill with throttle closed no smoke but when booting it after wards at the bottom of the hill i get clouds of blue smoke!!

but if i keep the throttle open as i come down the hill, then start off again at the bottom of the hill i get no smoke!!

this to me sounds like valve stem oil seals,

also when i start the car i get some blue smoke when i rev it but soon clears!!

so i have done all the valve stem oil seals with the heads on i might add :hyper:

and the smoke is still there same as before :headvswal

is it possible i have hammerd the valve stem oil seals down too hard? i did make a tool to push them down but then i used a big hammer till they were right the way down and making a pinging noise :wack:

or could this problem be a piston ring failure??

i have noticed my plug threads are a bit oilly

and my commpression is ok!!

and its using quite a bit of oil

can anyone please help as i might do the valve stem oil seals again if you all think that seems to be the problem!!

I have just done valve stem seals on my sons S13, I guess they could be the same. It would be hard to get them wrong, IMHO.

If the problem is exactly the same I would say it is NOT the seals. It would be very hard to replace them all and then have the same prob. Almost imposible I would say.

Also, if it is using lots of oil, again in my opinion valve stem seals cause small oil use, not lots. Did you check, (hard with the heads still fitted) for play in the valve guides? If these are very worn I would think the seals would strugle to cope?

Sounds like rings then I guess, but then a comp check is OK. But adding oil can make a check OK, so if the engine is adding its own oil, if you see what I mean, then the comp check may be wrong???

What are the breathers and inside the oil filler like when the engine is running? Is there oil mist coming out?

All IMHO. good luck

If it happens when going downhill it could be the PCV valves. IIRC if you brake hard with clutching (or just brake hard in an auto) and the revs drop down v. low or the car stalls this is also a symptom of the PVC valves.

If it was your piston rings surely you would have low compression..... ?

I can't explain the oil consumption if the rings are OK though, unless you have a turbo problem.

My ZX uses virtually no oil at all - I've only ever had to top it up once or twice since I've had it, and no more than 200ml.

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Cange of subject, sorry. I havent forgotten our proposed meet Richard, but my car is off road, soon to be fixed I hope.

Sounds more like Turbo oil seals to me. Sorry dued I don't want to be a downer , but thats all the symptoms of oil passing the turbo oil seal at low load and then burning off in the exhaust were it has collected once the engine is on song. If what I'm saying is correct then it only appears to not be smoking the rest of the time because its being burnt of imediately most of the time. However it would show up when you have your 02's checked.

It would also accout for oil consumption.

No worries Mark,

Hope you get it sorted soon

hi mark

have had new turbos 6months ago, and when checking the plugs they seem wet with oil!! so oil is deffinetly getting in the cylinders somehow??

From the intake side - the compressor turbine will experience vacuum on the overrun and then any oil passing the turbo shaft seals that side will be sucked into the inlet manifold -I think - then when you throttle open again it will all get burned.

this is very unlikely, since the oil has to pass through intercooler tubing/hoses + intercoolers first.

oil on sparkplug(s) is usually a sign of some advanced form of engine wear, either worn rings or leaking valve oil seals.

You said you measured compression...how much was it ?

Is there a lot of oil inside the plenum ? (as far as you can see)

If so, there might be something wrong with the PCV system

hi there

nope no oil in the plennum or intake hoses and new pcv valves fitted too

compression is about 145 on cyl 1 but about 160 on all the rest!!

smokes from both zorsts!!
