I'm trying to diagnose something. Does anyone know what the effects of too much oil would be? A garage I took my car too has overfilled it by at least one inch above the max mark, possibly two.

You are likely to get more smoking than normal(!). Aim to keep the oil at approx the 3/4 mark on the dipstick.

w.t.f---one or two inch, ide get that out as soon as possible mate

not only is it bad for your motor but performance will be reduced at that level due to your crank having to cut through that much oil

increased oil pressure can cause oil seals to blow (turbos, rear engine ect ect)
I have just finished rebuilding an engine for an import company , basically the big ends had gone so to mask this the car was overfilled with oil to quieten down the noise, this caused the front and rear crank seals to go and also caused the car to struggle to tickover due to too much oil , when we drained it there was near on 9 litres of oil in the drain tank , I am amazed it even ran :(

Fekkin hell, since full capacity is a little over an inch (maybe 1.5 ins) from the bottom of the dipstick that must have way too much in the sump

Many garages just don't realise how long the oil takes to drain back into the sump after a refil, start-up and rest.

I had my ZX serviced at a different garage this time (long story) but I always supply my own oil. I left 4 litres of Texaco synthetic (same amount as always) yet when I collected the car, the mechanic said I may have to top it up a bit when I get home.......

I know my ZX takes 4 litres so when I got home, I left it for 15-20 minutes and checked the level - what do you know, it was just up to the full mark. Just as well I supply my own oil otherwise they would have overfilled it with whatever stuff they put in ordinary cars

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

i blimin hate the 300s dipstick, hard to read it properly at the best of times

Oh don't worry. It's coming straight out in the morning!

Symptoms I've got though are clouds of smoke out of the exhaust, with a definate oil smell to them.

Hopefully this has just been caused by oil surge leading to oil being dragged through the PCV system. Does this sound right?
