I'm fitting an oil pressure gauge and it comes with it's own sender.

Where/how do I fit it?

I presume I need to drill into an oil channel somewhere?

Chris.

It's an electrical one I think, it doesn't need an oil feed to the gauge like some I've seen.

Hello Chris,

I'm not sure if there's a UK/Jap difference but as Iain told me, next to the oil filter there is a 10mm bolt that you can take out and then fit the sender unit in.

Vijay

Yeah there is a 10mm nut above the filter where it will go in as well as the stock one. It is infact where the US sender unit is placed. I dont know why its in a different place.

Thanks guys,

I just remembered the gauges are the same as yours Stuart.

Do you have the oil pressure one of these?

Yep I have boost oil and water temp.

The oil pressure is rather good I think. I put it in place as my stock one as the stock gauge hardly ever moved anyway.

Sorry to sound a bit thick...

Does this mean that you just plumbed in the gauges using the cables on the back of the main instrument panel? i.e. patched the feeds for the oil pressure and water temp into the new gauges?

Then obvious plumbed the boost guage at the engine point LH feed (where the standard gauge is fed)...

Sorry to ask such detailed questions, just in the same boat as Chris. Got the DIN panel, got the gauges wired then in except the feeds...

Before screwing it all back together, just wondered whether I should use the sender unit that came with the gauge and even the water temp?

Await your response...

Ben

Hello Ben,

Do you mechanical or electrical gauges and which ones (oil/water temp etc)?

3 electrical gauges (water temp, boost and oil pressure)

Cheers

Ben

OK, well your oil gauge sender unit needs to be plumbed in as above then a wire from the sender unit to the gauge.

The water temp gauge may or may not work correctly on the stock sender depending on if the resistance of the senders. What people have done is upgraded to one of Smithy's water pipes where he can weld in your new sender to the pipe.

IIRC most people get a mechanical boost gauge as there is no sender involved, it's just a matter of teeing off a vacuum line. I assume it's the same thing with an electrical gauge, but you would T the sender unit in and then run a cable to the gauge.

Does that help at all:confused:

Vijay

Top marks Vijay...

Thanks for the help. I will need to sort out a pipe from Smithy then..

More work than I first thought, but should be worth it...

Cheers

Sorry to dredge this one up again guys but I'm trying to find the 10mm nut metioned by Stu above for fitting an electrical oil pressure sender. I've attached a pic and any pointers would be appreciated.

remove the oil filter and you should see it.

Hey mate

Hopefully the attached pic should help. This shows the oil filter bracket off the car. I've highlighted the connection I presume Stu is on about.

Nice one Mike - top fella!

Right, have done a search on removing the oil filter, but all the results relate to doing a complete oil change.. :( If I remove the filter, I assume I will get a flood of oil pouring out onto the floor. Is this the case? If so then I guess an oil change is in order as well

I have seen mention of an Oil Filter Removal Tool. Do I need one of these or is there a workaround?

Many thanks

Steve :)

Yes you'll need to an oil change as oil will pour out. Your best bet is to buy a filter wrench (less than a tenner) but if this is gonna be a one off (you personally removing the filter), then what you can do is stab the filter from the side with a screwdriver just so you can start turning it. You do it back up by hand anyway.

A BIG pair of Grips!

Well thats what i use if i cant undo it with my hands!

just don;t fit it in the US place which is above the oil filter. because with a LHD you can get away with it but somneone on here found out that with a RHD car you are limiting your turning ratio as the steering rack gets blocked by the new sender.

Oh FFS! Is there another point to plug a sender into up there Stu? I assumed that I was going to use the US sender position... Did you put an Oil Pressure Gauge on yours in the end mate?

yup, that was me, I think it depends on the size of the sender as to whether it'll interfere or not. I think us Jap owners can put it were the UK one is (once I find out where that is - passanger side somewhere)

James, I think you've got the Avanti sender as well so I'll have to rethink this one... Doh! Is yours not connected then mate?

'fraid not, will try again soon though

buy a 90 degree elbow and it'll fit ok where the oil filter is. That's what I did and have had no problems :)
