Hi again,

I should think all you lot on here are getting fed up of me now! My car hasn't even been loaded on the boat in Japan and I'm posting questions like a mad thing!

Anyway, I have noticed alot of you on here have said goodby to the cats on your car. What are the gains roughly? Is the best way to bypass it with a proper pipe or is smashing it through just as good? Will it cause me problems with emissions come MOT time?

My car is a 1990 so I know it does not legally need a cat. It has, by the looks of things on the photo I have seen of my car that it has a huge single exit exhaust, probably and HKS Drager or somthing like that. Would that effect the disposal of the cat in anyway?

Thanks for your replies in advance,

Justin:)

Get a bypass hose, more expensive but better performance and sound IMHO,

you will notice your tubs spool up quicker,

everyone is waiting for PaulC to do it so we can get a performance measure ;)

Slightly faster spool up of turbos, nicer exhaust note,

Mines 1990 and it flies through the emissions no problem.

Some say if your turbo seals are on their last legs then the drop in back pressure could pull oil through and make your car smokey, I didnt have this problem but I was only on about 50k when I de-catted it.

Just cut them out and weld a piece of pipe in or buy decat pipes from GPS in the traders section. Dont just smash the guts out, this will just act as an expansion chamber and cause turbulance.

Well for a start in my case, it get rid of itchy eyes and sneezing .. :D

Seriously though, you're right de-catting is a common mod amongst us lot .. I've just had de-cat pipes fitted to mine (91 TT) - not required for MOT, so no worries on that front as for your own.

On the plus-sude, I believe that whilst there's no increase in bhp, the theory is that the turbos spool up quicker, although it seems that experiences vary with this - some people reporting a major difference - others not! Once I've had a chance to give her a proper thrashing I'll let you know - but that was certainly the aim.

On the minus-side, it's often discussed that if you have weak turbo seals, the back-pressure release of the de-cat will accelerate their departure, and you'll soon have a smokey idle .. however and require £££ to be spent, although many people on here have de-catted without this problem, so again it's a bit luck-of-the-draw, I think.

HTH,

JB.

Thanks for the advise then guys, I will probably get the air filter and chip done then consider the Cat bypass then.

Cheers

It may well have already been decatted if it has a super drager exhaust on ;)

oh thats it, wait for the cheeky wind up guinea pig to kill his turbo's 1st :D i'll do it if you all have a whip round for some of smiffy's hybrids if my turbo's do go ;)

It may well have had the cats ditched. I will see in about 7 weeks time when it arrives.

Also, can someone have a whip around for Paul C's turbo's so he can continue experimenting for us!
