would it be possible to modify the 300 to have cylinder deactivation of 3 of the 6 cylinders while cruising to save fuel ? this could be manually chosen, or automatically activated.

ne1 know if this would be possible (without spending a fortune) ?

Would ne1 want it ?

WHY?

I dont think deactivating 3 cylinders would help, because you would have a 1.5 pulling a 1.5 ton car.

I know some US cars do this but run on 4.

I think it is probable to make it run as a 2 litre 4 cylinder, but I think there would be too many complications to add it to a car, and I think the turbos wound complicate things even more.

Stuart

why not just remove the cylinders before long journeys? thus saving mass and making you even more economical!!!

I have come across a fantastic way of making a Zed econmical to own.

Ready?

This could change your life...

Don't turn on the ignition.

Simple as....

Makes a tank of fuel last for absolutely ages.... :D

Neet.

It works with V8s because they usuall fire in pairs so you shut down one of each pair and it still runs smooth. With a V6 the cylinders each have their own firing 'window'. If you shut half of them down the engine will run lumpy as hell and probably shatter the crank lol.

Answer your q? ;)

I suppose the next thing your going to say is , to come up with an idea like that youd need half a brain :D :D

who wants to buy a UK zed ?

right you fookin nobheads, I'm fookin off to sXOC...people are friendly there !

a 300ZX is over-the-top, too heavy, too expensive and driven by egotistical pricks on the whole.

TWAT!

What are you going there for?. They think your as big a dickhead as we do on here.

How can you sell something you do not have.

And you mean what? Nelson posted a Q, some people thought it was funny, it is Friday afternoon FFS, Duff answered it on a tech level and Nelson got arsey. End of story.

Tim

Nelson, me old mass guru, have you ever been in a Z running on five cylinders. Take one of your ignition wires off and go for a spin. Runs like a bag of spanners! Now three cylinders... don't think so.

But, fair do's, there's nothing better than a post by my main man Nelson entitled, "Now then guys, how's this for an idea? ..."

Good work.

Another top idea for the "intellectuals" amongst us:

Increase the ratios in the diff so every turn is multiplied by 10 or more, giving about 3000 miles to a tank full, but causing lots of burnt clutches and 0-60 in about 5 minutes.

Just buy a diesel or walk to save even more fuel if you are a tree hugger.

Andy Duff - thanks for good answer.

300z - at least I don't try to rip off companies by threatening them. Grow up you arse !

Wendy - why do you talk a load of shyte all the time ?! You ever been on the 200SX board ?

TT Tim - at steady state driving conditions, it can save money to use cylinder deactivation without losing power. Some big American cars use it - but as Andy duff says, you'd need a big V8 probably to make it workable.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In summary, my question was not ridiculous and I got unnecessary abuse as a result. I can't imagine this happening on sxoc.co.uk

I'm not an imbicile Nelson, I just couldn't see the logic in your question.

I'm well aware that a number of the US V8's shut down cylinders, some also have service intervals or upto 100,000 miles and can run without fluids, the Cadillac Northstar is an example of this.

If you want economy buy a Smart Car, or alternatively you can look at the difference in cost between a Smart Car and a Zed and spend the balance on fuel!

Performance and economy improvements are not always mutually exclusive. The extra BHP of a 300ZX is useless when driving at a constant speed of say, 70mph. Cyl Deactivation means less fuel used without reduced performance - hence some American cars use this technology. When accelerating the CD is switched off. So there's no need to get sarcy talking about Smart Cars etc.

Are you always itching for a fight Nelson?

I wasn't being sarcastic, I was pointing out that the Zed is not meant, or ever designed to be, a particaually economic car, but having said that, under the conditions you just described I can achieve 30+ MPG which I think is quite acceptable.

Anyway, I thought you'd buggered off to the 200 forum?

Just because you're losing the argument, you resort to more abuse. Very mature. Because I am defending myself, I am itching for a fight ? Yeah, can see the logic there !! Don't have a go if you don't want to get a response.

30+ MPG - I very much doubt that ! I'd be lucky to achieve that in my 200SX. r u sure you aint running on 4 cylinders ?

I don't plan to come here much at all, just wanted to make my point on this thread. But as usual, ppl don't read the whole thread and then make incorrect comments/get things confused - hence why I'm fed up of this place.

OH FFS VTD!

Who's loosing an argument, I'm not arguing?

Just goes to show what a load of crap you talk Nelson, I achieved 30.97 Mpg on 15/7/2001! and yes my record are that accurate, if your 200 isn't coming close then I'd have a look at it m8, it's obviously not running quite right, maybe you need to reduce the mass a bit. :D
