I really did not want to buy another car, but the government has forced me to.

I could not pass this one up it arrived this morning.
 

2002 Porsche 996 3.6 315bhp Full Leather high spec car.

Only fault needs an engine rebuild, really looking forward to it.

 

Fun will start in 2 weeks

The 996 generation is definitely the best value for money out of the lot, and no reason for it to be cheaper than the rest, as it’s a very capable car. People don’t seem to like the headlights but I think the headlights in facelift form look great, it’s only the pre-face light ones that haven’t aged well - I guess it’s like marmite really.

What’s the actual problem with this car then? IMS bearings gone or something?

Hope you keep using the zed still!

Hi oh yes not selling the Zed it will become a weekend car and trips to shows.
I do like the look as well, funny how this 3.6 litre is ULEZ Compliant.

The car has a lot of carbon build up and bore score, the engine turns over freely so I hope it’s just new liners, bearings and IMS.

Glad you’re keeping the zed then and probably best to get a daily to keep the zed living on long term. I’ve just bought an e46 330cd as a daily, which I don’t think is Ulez compliant. But my old 3.3 Lexus was compliant! Some of the cars that are compliant really do confuse me.

Let’s hope those are the only issues then and looking forward to seeing updates.

.....I like the 996 and would definitely have one myself. I know 911 purists lament the air-cooled versions, but they weren't necessarily the most useable. I know of 993 owners having to pull over for a half hour break from a journey in the height of summer, to let the engine cool down. Sod that, if I have a journey to complete, I'd prefer to complete it. 996 all the way, I say.... ?

Car finally in the tent, spent last 2 days in the freezing cold clearing it out. We had to push it into the road, turn it round and up a bit of a hill into the tent. Was not funny.

 

Finally got some work done on the Porsche. It’s been hard getting to the garage with this lockdown.

Engine is out and not looking to bad at the mo, but still need to strip it down, after this cold spell I will get it on the engine stand and get the rusty exhaust bolts out or snap them off. I purchased an ATV Lift and lowered the engine and box with my engine hoist and jack on gearbox.

It’s a huge lump, head to head.

Started stripping the engine down last couple of days, no big surprises, better than expected, bore score on cylinders 4, 5, & 6, IMS bearing in excellent condition. I will send the blocks for Hartech closed deck aluminium alloy cylinders with Nikiski plating and new or reconditioned pistons.  There was hardly any metal in oil, will get the crank out tomorrow and see what condition the shells are like.

Just think how much simpler it will be when it's just a couple of electric motors at each end of the car.

Engine fully apart now, it’s best case scenario for me, I was always going to upgrade cylinders all new shells three new pistons and three refurbished.

Complete engine gasket kit. The heads I will clean in my new parts washer and lap the valves a little.

Hi Guys I should have my blocks back next week, they machine out the original Porsche Lokasil cast in liner, preform and replace it with an aluminum alloy cylinder plated with Nikasil, all 6 being done with new pistons. I have sent them my old IMS shaft to be upgraded to the larger bearing.

I have never had so much cleaning to do on an engine & gearbox before but getting there.

Few snapped bolts as Porsches are know for, not even started on the rusty exhaust bolts.

While the heads are off, get those intake ports walnut shell blasted and get rid of that horrid carbon build up.

Hi been a while shame that idiot got re-elected. 
So I have been busy building a shed for the engine reassembly, parts all back now.

I went for the expensive Larger IMS bearing machined into same sprocket so I don’t have to change the chains.

 

 

Unfortunately there is no rebuild for the 996.2 3.6 engine so will get advice from the 911Site most is the same as the 4.3, it’s just the timing setup.

Since I’m doing it at my Brothers I can’t get there all the tIme.

Yard Master picked it up second hand for £50 what a bargain 8x6. I put the caps on screws and sealed edges from dust.

Hi not done a lot recently, but have been doing some bits last few days. I purchased a ultrasonic cleaner 30L works really well just have to keep putting parts in, then as the fluid gets dirty change it and repeat till happy with it.

As we all know old cars always need ££££££.
The underbody seems very good will poke around with my endoscope.

I decided to take the whole suspension out to clean and check bushes, 3 nuts underneath and 3 on the top of the shock.

2 new scavenge pumps.

What is the cleaning liquid? Is it some special or just water?

Is it only metal you can clean in there? or can you put other materials such as plastics, fabrics, etc?
